I'm an electrical engineer and for the longest time I was saying that electricity and electronics isn't magic, but think about it.
You literally have to collect rare stones from remote locations, put them into specific formations to work. All of this gets written down in symbols which don't make sense to the uninformed. It gets powered by energy which can not be seen in most cases.
Like what else do you want. What's your standard for calling something magic.

i can offer miserable but funnily shaped journalists, and a cannibal/people-eating insect gang lead by a beefed up rooster busted wasp lady. yes they're related. imagine not reporting on such a gang lolol (okay there's more characters on my profile, i have my fish and some assorted sillies, they're all from the same world, but these guys are the most developed and ones i'm the most passionate about)

Actually I don't do references much (still try to provide good visuals, but I like when people do their own interpretations/modifications of my designs), but I still need to redo bios and draw updated designs for SO MANY OF THEM this is a cry for help and I really hope I'm not the only one

I have a very important midterm tomorrow :') been feeling really burnt out bcs of it, but I can't wait to get back into properly working on my projects and comic again!!!!! Hopefully I won't flunk this test as bad as I did the previous one
I didn't know the correct names of different tree kinds in english, so I used to call her Ms. Pine. She's a fir.
Well the ms pine name is staying. Friend suggested she could be called Treesa, and that can be cool?
She's one of my treefolk (humans that merged with trees or plants during their life. They all function kinda different, because the tree to human ratio manifested in each differently, but most have bark-like skin, and the muscles hardened up into wood. Actually that part is a big issue. Their joints begin to grow stiff, so they need to go and get them periodically broken up, to retain as much mobility as possible.)
They have some very....specific needs, especially in regards to their health. Treefolk maintain a pretty strong sense of community, and they help each other out a lot. Treesa in particular ended up claiming few tree kids as her own, and ever since the War, has been designing and trying out different mobility aids and tools for them. Eventually she started helping other treefolk out, trying to find the best solution for everybody's needs, and as everybody in the City slowly realised the benefit of a well designed prostethic or an aid, she became 'the person' that everybody could come to. She's running a small workshop now, designing (and repairing) for every person's needs and measurements. She's a very calm person (protective of others too), and people generally feel safe around her. She doesn't hand out affection and gestures or love....more like if a fairy godmother became a designer that needs to make money bcs kindness won't pay her bills.
That's one issue that she's always battling with. She wants to help people, but because she has to keep the workshop afloat (including people that work with her...like that woman is pretty flammable, she needed a smith), provide for her family and her own self, resources are very limited. And she's not fond of charging money. Many times, bills are the main thing on her mind, and it's got a tight hold on her entire private life :(
(also as her son Branch is getting older, and is exploring his artistic abilities, he's been helping her out by decorating and customising prostethics they make. I need to work on the relationship of those 2, because him being almost like her 'apprentice' could be so cute)
Also also, I've been pondering on the idea of a design with one boob removed for quite a while. It's something that isn't seen as much, and has imo a lot of potential for interesting uses. In Treesa's case, it was canker.
She was probably a lot more active during the War, but as she grew older she's not as flexible and mobile as she used to be. I tried to show it off in her design, where she's much more 'artistic' looking (and because a flowy robe just looks nice with her hair shape), rather than the one doing the heavy labor. She works with friends she made during the war, and focuses on measuring, designing, and testing things nowadays
the trick about getting invested and confident in ur own concepts is to surround urself with other likeminded artists who are down to earth. i know nowadays especially people think "indie" and they think undertale or glitch pilots and they have paved the way for great things but i mean like. engage with your friends comics theyve been posting to an audience of 20-30 people. The people who are genuinely at your level with you. Who are working on their projects on the side because they still have a full time job to attend to. who go on long hiatuses because theyre in college and are crunching for tests at the moment.
maybe one day youll have all the resources you want to create your stories exactly how you imagine it at the speed you want it to be done, but until you get there you'll find so many people working with the same resources and available time that you have, and its about that network of small artists being able to support each other that can light a spark that you thought you needed an audience of hundreds to light.
Rethinking my stance on tofu. Desperately in need of a low effort protein source for days when cooking up and maintaing basic food safety with meat feels too tiring, and legumes take too much time (and pot cleanup effort)
Lore notes below (but written as a stream of consciousness without many edits)
Ange is a professional horn polisher. Just like other Demons, she moved to the City right as the war conflict between Humans and Nonhumans began to rise. Demons took the Nonhuman side (and they were grouped in with monsters anyways). These beings, Ange included, were servants of immortals. Granted too much awareness and being naturally more 'imbued' with Magic compared to other races, they offered their services and knowledge to the rebellion. Still joking about their dire situation being 'better than back at home'.
Ange moved and made her family a part of the Demon community. Her amulet isn't gold, because rather than being an active and 'roaming' guardian, she was stationary - residing at the rebel bases.
She boasts about being able to sharpen and 'pretty up' anything she lays her hands upon (with industrial tools) and she expanded her 'trade' into helping weaponsmiths with sharpening and repairing weapons (and occasional horns and bones of nonhumans).
Ange had a few children of her own, and she was hoping to find a love of her life to take care of them. Unfourtunately she had very poor impulse control and taste in men. She'd fall in love way too quickly and bring in even more kids. On the other side, she'd sober up even faster, being overly sensitive to any 'bad behavior' from her partners, be it towards her, or her children. All of her breakups were ugly (and lowkey violent). Was she overly sensitive or in the right? Depends on the situation, but her kids ended up just rolling their eyes at any 'new dad' appearing. She's gained quite the reputation among the rebels, being kind and reliable but an absolute no-go with romantic relationships. And despite that she always finds someone (none of her kids except for her eldest twins have the same father. Visually they're all mainly like her with only small variations)
Ange is Horatio's mum (if you couldn't tell by them being like carbon copies of one another). She has (and has been making) an ungodly amount of kids, but she loves and cares for them all very dearly. She's very protective and physically affectionate. She trusts and gives her kids a lot of freedom (sometimes a bit too much) and they're very closely-knit. Horatio being the 2nd eldest (right after the twins) would venture and accompany rebels since knowing how to walk, seeing the 'adventures' as another form of play.
One day he returned back home with a stray critter. Asking Ange to keep him.
Said critter was actually a fucked up freshly fused 'mixed' kid. Half human half monster. Barely able to stand on its own legs.
Ange wasn't particularly fond of humans, but she couldn't leave it to just die on her doorstep, so she reluctantly agreed. That kid grew up to be Nate, whom after fusing had no family to go to. Rejected by the human world for being 'tainted' and all his inhuman relatives being long dead, Horatio picked him up from a human research facility during a riot, all because "he looked funny".
Nate did not belong at all - not just because he was a mixed kid among all monsters, those monsters were also from an entirely different culture. But he quickly grew onto Ange, and his bond with Horatio was almost brotherly. She essentially raised him as her own, with occasional 'differences' showing up along the way (like when she tried to cut his hair only to find it all grew back the next day).
His main fear and constant internal worry is being 'different' and not quite 'right', so he never even dared to think of or call Ange his mother, only remaining at 'aunt Angie' (a title which she gladly adopted, though she really did raise him like just another one of her kids). He also understands conversational basics of the demon speech and their social conventions, but he was never truly able to get the 'complete' grasp (which was a limitation more physical rather than intellectual. He just wasn't built like a demon duh)
Nate also quickly outgrew all the other demon kids, and many of the things he wore as a teenager were hand-me-downs from Ange. He also adopted her terrible habit of smoking at about 13 years of age (and Horatio quickly followed) and since there were literal soldiers walking around and hunting monsters, nobody really cared abt that too much. Didn't take long and they were 'fetching' packs for Ange as well.
Just like Horatio and all the others, they don't really have a present/stable paternal figure. As the boys grew older, they realised that Angie's 'issue' may not be in 'all suitors bad' but rather her hyper sensitivity to 'strangers' wronging her and her loved ones, and it eventually just became a running joke to place bets on how long her relationships would last. They banter with her a lot, and the older they grow the less filtered they get. It's very casual but sweet between them.
Unfourtunately, with that amount of siblings, Ange being generally really busy and the entire *war* thing going on, both of the boys kinda skimped out on their internal development - both choosing to bottle up their feelings and deeper rooted issues, as there was obviously no time for such matters. Horatio did a significantly worse job at it though, leaving Nate to worry about 'letting him down' even more, and worsening his habit of just not being emotionally present with himself. Nate would 'adapt' his behaviour and attitude to suit whatever other people 'needed', he would try to be there for Horatio and then act all silly and wholesome when Ange was around, to not make her worry more.
Post revolution, Ange leaves the metal work behind, instead using the market to open her own shop, where she offers what she does the best again - polishing and shaping horns. She has a small place that's well renowned among demons (hence she knows how to do their horns the best) but its reputation spreads by the word of mouth. It quickly gains traction, and she's thriving - doing what she loves whilst having shitty soap operas play in the background, gossiping with all her clients and making everybody look sleek and sharp as hell. (She also adopts a cat, the timeline isn't fully set on that, but it's this massive ugly white persian with a missing eye that hates everyone except for Ange. Might have her adopt her during the war already since the missing eye thing is aura and yk war veteran cat why not)
Post revolution she finally 'gives up' on her pursuit of love...at least in regards to all nonhuman men. She's fed up and they're just not good enough for her, so she's finally focusing on just herself and her family.
Horatio and Nate move out really quickly too, already being with the journalists, they recieved honorary acknowledgement for their participation in the revolution and rebellion as a whole, and they've got fresh and exciting lives ahead of them.
Ange's kids, whilst kinda feral and all over the place, are very hard and talented workers, and upon reaching adulthood they're all quickly moving out into their new careers. Previously mentioned twins become either real estate agents or lawyers (running a firm together), eldest daughter (right after Horatio) works for the City's offices. There's a currently angsty teenaged girl and then 3 more kids from what I recall
Ange is lowkey a very minor character but she a baddieeeee, lots of this stuff outside of her influence on Nate's and Horatio's upbringing doesn't show up in the story at all.
But, in regards to her future development, let's just say that she ends up crossing paths with a *disgusting* human. A disgustingly kind, gentle (lowkey a pussy) and sweet human man. He's sort of like a 'park ranger' with 2 massive dogs that lives at the outskirts of the City, and whilst Ange never really found humans attractive nor interesting (her ideal man obviously has many scars, is crazy good at magic and has SICK ASS HORNS. This mfer has none of it, he just wears a cool hat), she can't help but be drawn to him....
Yeah no her kids will not spare any mercy, she's getting roasted beyond oblivion for falling for such a loser.
