Based on this prompt: college au where dean and cas Met and Did Things at orientation in the spring and then they have a class together in fall and dean realizes cas is pregnant and hes like. shit. oh shit. is that mine.
Dean is slightly less freaked out and more hopeful, but I hope the OP enjoys.
Dean hadn’t expected to see him again.
He’d hoped he would, but the campus was a big place and from what he’d gathered in the short snatches of conversation he’d had with Castiel in between hot and heavy make-out sessions, Castiel was looking to try new things out, Dean included apparently.
Not that Dean minded being Castiel’s first time with sex, or with another guy for that matter. He’d been flirting with Castiel all the way through orientation and once they got some time alone, the only thing he’d wanted to do was drag Castiel back to his dorm room and test out the lumpy old mattress.
But after the sex, which had been great, and the cuddling, which had been awesome, Castiel had just disappeared.
Dean hadn’t spent too much time looking for him, if he was honest. He had a scholarship. H couldn’t chase around after some guy who didn’t even leave a number and had probably just used Dean to scratch his experimental itch. Dean needed to prove that he was worth the money people had invested in him. He had to work hard to produce the grades he needed to keep that scholarship. If he crossed paths with Castiel again, it was all well and good, but he wasn’t going to dedicate his time to finding a lost one-night-stand.
So he kept his nose to the grindstone, worked hard and only thought about Castiel once or twice a week.
And then the fall semester rolled around, Dean started a new class and who should walk through the door on the first day but Castiel? - rumpled, gorgeous, and just as stunning as Dean remember.
But there was one thing that was noticeable different about him. The Castiel that Dean had bedded, the one he’d gotten to know intimately and nakedly, hadn’t been pregnant.
The one who walked slowly across the lecture hall to take his seat now was definitely entering the final trimester of his pregnancy. There could be no hiding or deny that.
Dean didn’t know what to do. He’d spent all this time hoping he’d cross paths with Castiel again, but he’d never expected a bombshell like this when he did. He’d been Castiel’s first time - if Castiel had been telling the truth - and Dean could do basic math like unprotected sex equalled a baby nine months later.
He just didn’t understand why Castiel hadn’t tried to find him.
Once the lecture started, Dean found it hard to pay attention to it. He was too focused on Castiel, staring at him from across the room, although Castiel seemed oblivious to him.
It might not be his baby, Dean reasoned. Castiel might have met another guy, might have become serious with him and that was why he’d never contacted Dean. There would be no reason for him to seek Dean out in that scenario.
The thought of Castiel with someone else, pregnant by someone else, was something Dean couldn’t focus on for too long. His mind rebelled against the idea. He didn’t want to believe that he might have missed his chance with Cas, that one night was all they were ever going to have.
He’d missed Castiel. What they’d shred had been fleeting, but the passion had been real. Dean had hoped they’d meet again, had hope that their spark would still be there when they did. He’d wanted to see Castiel again. Even now, knowing that his life might change irreparably if he reintroduced himself, he didn’t want to let this chance pass him by. If he was going to be a dad, then he’d deal with it.
As soon as the lecture finished Dean stood up, making his way to Castiel as fast he could, climbing over chairs and side-stepping other students until he reached Castiel’s side. Castiel was part way through packing his things away, facing away from Dean as he dug around in his rucksack. It took Dean a few seconds to work up the nerve to clear his throat and alert Castiel to his presence.
He tried to imagine what he would say. There where so many questions in his head, so many things he needed answers to.
“Dean?” Castiel looked up at him, surprised, shocked. He really had been oblivious to Dean the whole time.
All the clever words in Dean’s head took flight. He stared into Castiel’s eyes and knew that there was only one thing he needed to know.
“Is it mine?” Dean asked, panting a little. “I just…Cas, please..is it mine?”
Castiel looked at him. For a moment, he looked scared and Dean hated seeing that. He wouldn’t do anything Castiel didn’t want. If Castiel didn’t want him involved, then Dean would respect that. It would break his heart, but he’d walk away if that was what Castiel needed. But if it wasn’t, if Castiel wanted him involved, then he’d move Heaven and Earth to provide for him and the baby
Castiel drew in a deep breath, looking up at Dean with a firm, unwavering gaze.
“Yes,” he said. “It’s yours.”
Dean sank down until he was kneeling besides Cas’ chair, a wide smile stretched across his face. The baby was his. That connection he and Castiel had, it had been enough to create a completely new person. Although it was a lot to take in, Dean couldn’t be happier about it.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” he asked.
“We aren’t a couple, we just had sex,” Castiel said. “I didn’t want you to reject me…reject us. I can do this on my own, it will be fine.”
He sounded so sincere and Dean knew Castiel was offering him the option to walk away, to believe that Castiel would be fine on his own and wash his hands of the whole affair, but that was the last thing Dean wanted to do.
“I know we’re not a couple, Cas, but you don’t have to do this on your own. I want to be there for you, and for the baby. I’ve been thinking about you a lot, all the time really, I hoped I’d find you again. I’m not saying we jump straight into a relationship, or that we ever have to get there, but I am saying that you’re not going to be alone in this. I’m here for you, however you want me.”
Castiel swallowed, his lip trembling.
“I hate these hormones,” he whispered. “Do you mean that?”
“Cas, since I saw you again all I could think about was how much I hoped that was my baby,” Dean said with complete sincerity.
“Okay,” Castiel said, and his eyes were wet. “If I kiss you now is that okay?”
Dean nodding, leaning forward, and their lips met in a slowly, soft kiss. This wasn’t about jumping each others bones, it was an affirmation.
All the passion was still there, the same spark, but now there was a sense of belonging that hadn’t been there the first time they’d kissed.
To Dean it felt like coming home.
