The Apothecary Diaries is such a breath of fresh air because this is a story that genuinely seems to love women. From the sex workers of the Verdigris House to the seemingly antagonistic women of the palace (like Suirei and Loulan), the Apothecary Diaries declares that every single one of them deserves grace and dignity even if (or especially if) they come into conflict with its protagonist or societal respectability

I love that Maomao’s most meaningful relationships are with women. I love that she has so much respect for sex workers and other laborers. I love that Shenmei, arguably the most villainous woman we see, is still fondly remembered by her dying husband. I love that Jinshi is allowed to understand the motive behind the Shi clan’s rebellion. I love that narrative insists we remember Xiaolan even when Maomao herself forgets.

I love that, from the highest ranking concubines to the lowest ranking laundresses, the Apothecary Diaries insists on the humanity of all its women.
