Tibet declared itself an independent country in 1913, with its own flag. It was ruled peacefully by a chain of Dalai Lamas. Unfortunately, it somehow got on China’s burn list, and was occupied by Mao in 1951. Technically, Tibet continued to be a state until it rebelled against their occupiers in 1959, causing a swift retaliation and annexation. Now, Tibet is only a region within the country of China.
