the point of the riddle isn’t to figure out which one is lying, in fact, knowing which one lies and which one tells the truth is irrelevant. What you want is the correct answer from the magical beast/two guards/etc. Usually this means knowing which path to take. For that, you HAVE to ask it “if i ask the other head/guard/etc which is the safe way to go, what will they tell me?”

if you asked the truth-telling one, they’ll tell you the wrong way, because the liar will always mislead you. if you ask the liar, they’ll tell you the wrong way, because they’re misleading you, so

ALWAYS do the opposite of whatever answer you get.

A few years ago a friend threw a halloween party, and since he dressed as the Riddler, he decided to have a riddle contest.

now, i’ve been preparing for a riddle contest my entire life, since i first read the hobbit and it got bilbo out of trouble. for some reason, i assumed riddle contests were as inevitable as quicksand.

I answered the first riddle easily (it was one of the ones from the hobbit) and then i had to answer the next one to win a bottle of top-shelf rum. it was a variation on the two-guard riddle, only i had to choose one of two paper bags. one had crappy cheap vodka, the other the nice rum. 

the host and his friend did the classic one lies one tells the truth thing, and of course before i asked everyone started shouting “ask him what color your hair is!” and stuff like that, but i already knew what to ask, so i shushed them and won the rum

remember, kids, it doesn’t matter which one is lying and which one is telling the truth. all that matters is you get the correct knowledge to move you forward, win your rum, and make you seem like a superhuman riddle-solver to a crowd of drunken party guests.

Here’s a thing that usually doesn’t come up when people try to criticise this riddle as well. One of the conditions of the riddle is typically that you only get to ask one question. You arrive at the liar and the truth teller and you need to find out which bridge is safe and which one will collapse when you’re halfway across.

They tell you that one of them always lies and that one of them always tells the truth. And they tell you you can ask them one question.

If you ask “What’s two plus two?” than great. You know which one lies but you also still don’t know which bridge you can cross and can’t find out.

I’m calling bullshit on a 5 year old understanding the mechanics and skill curve of Bloodborne. You really expect me to believe that a 5 year old deduced which combat stats need to be buffed, figured out some obtuse item descriptions at a kindergarten reading level, elemental items for bosses, gehrman, gascoigne, shadow of yharnam, chime maidens, etc etc etc. At an age where 99% of children need automatic steering in Mario Kart?

Not to mention the only pictures we have of him with the actual game visible, are him standing next to the win screen and him in the hub area (most likely pretending to play) while standing up.

Throw in the guy’s first reaction to his 5 year old son beating Bloodborne, is to complain about journalists and shit on people who want to play on easy, and I have pretty fair reason to assume this guy just played through Bloodborne, then handed his son the controller and took some photos to try and make a point.

Sure a 5 year old could possibly beat Bloodborne but these photos are obviously staged.

Also, what self-respecting parent lets their kid play British Pig-Fisting Cosmic Horror Simulator?

A lot of people have gotten into the habit of believing that the Soulsborne games are insanely hard, and they just kinda… aren’t. They’re challenging and they take some time to get a feel for, but once you hit your stride, they aren’t that bad that a 5 year old couldn’t beat them.

Journos fucking suck at video games. This is not up for debate. Just fuckin’ git gud and you won’t have to waste your time whining about getting clowned on by a literal child.

There’s a variety of reasons one might not want to “git gud” at a Souls/Bloodborne game. For one, some people have very little free-time and a huge backlog of games and don’t want to spend half a year on every game they play. Some people, surprisingly, don’t have time to grind through shit getting their ass handed to them over and over again to build up the muscle memory and remember attack pattens/tactics because they’ve got other shit on their mind.

Some people who play games are, shockingly, adults with lives beyond gaming!

And even then, “gitting gud” at a game like Bloodborne is ultimately a pointless endeavour, at the end of it, the only skill you have gained is being good at Bloodborne. You could say that about most games, that’s part of why things other than pure mechanics matter, as there’s much more to experience and take in. If that’s what you want to do with your spare time, fine. But acting superior because you can waste your time better than someone else is just fucking dumb.

After a while, “Gitting Gud” is just a waste of your short, finite lifespan. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with someone playing games on easy mode to give themselves more time to play more games on easy mode.

Less than three minutes later, Link kills the first of Ganon’s Blights with a single arrow and swiftly takes down the next three. Within five minutes of Ganon being face to face with his arch nemesis, he is killed.

Ganon fucking wishes. Link comes flying in on a paraglider at like 80 mph just because he jumped off a bokoblin’s head. I can only imagine Link screaming “FUUUUUUUUCK YOOOOOOOOUUUUUU” all the way (about 50 seconds in the run but 30 seconds without lag)
