different parallel i've been thinking about. i didn't feel like making gifs even though this would be a little clearer animated, but the whole getting suddenly and violently snapped out of an intimate moment thing feels very very similar between these two scenes. the way donna sort of flinches at realizing they're not alone, the sudden screech of the greenhouse door opening that shocks both utena and anthy and the audience out of their quiet reflecting. the way the music cuts out in both scenes to indicate the presence of this intruder in their shared space.
idk how to say this without sounding crazy but. i think sometimes people forget iwtv is a horror show
its a very tight, streamlined narrative of louis+claudias abuse at the hands of violent manipulative & predatory men, & the lengths those men go to maintain control, its got some of the most stark & unsettling & visceral depictions of domestic violence , memory loss due to trauma. its vampires for fucks sake, its about monsters & how they use existing systems of power (white supremacist patriarchy, most obviously) to keep preying on the people around them with a supernatural tilt, & it feels like every other post or art or video abt it is 'gay vampires doing crazayyy shit lol #istandwithmycancelledwife' like nothing anyone on that show does has any weight or impact or meaning whatsoever. like the damage inflicted by those characters doesnt mean anything, & like the very very realistic & human violence taking place in it is negated by the fact that theyre vampires so it cant *really* matter. using the fact that its about vampires & that its gothic romance to shield anyone talking about the impact or implications inherent with the genre. people who want the romance of gothic without any of the horror. without it meaning anything. mindboggling
even iwtv viewers who hate lestat's guts and hate his romance with louis can generally agree that "louis never loved lestat bc lestat himself said so" is a ridiculous take that flattens the nuances of louis' character, so i don't understand why "louis always picked men over claudia bc claudia herself said so" is taken at face value by pretty much everyone who watches the show, from hardcore fans to casual viewers. like i actually know why, it's misogynoir. but it's still kinda fascinating how a fandom of predominantly nonblack viewers have managed to convince themselves that constantly gloating about how a black woman couldn't possibly be more loved and valued by her black father than she initially thought- often framing the very idea that a black woman could be more loved than nonblack men as a ridiculous farce- as a "defense" of claudia's character that honors her pov somehow. and ofc this desire to "honor claudia's pov" is completely selective, bc the same fans who claim claudia speaks the objective truth when she demeans louis or says he picked lestat/armand over her are the same fans who are first in line to dismiss claudia when she writes something about lestat or armand that they dislike. when claudia writes something negative about the nonblack men who abused and ultimately killed her, she's obviously lying or a hysterical teenager or ill-informed. when claudia calls louis a fickle deadbeat dad or underestimates her own worth or calls herself a shingle that flew off her parents' roof, her pov is clearly infallible and it's offensive to suggest that she didn't know the full truth or that she didn't have all the facts. the black woman is only an unreliable narrator when she makes her murderers her look bad- when she's denigrating her black father or denigrating herself, then and only then can she be completely trusted
There's a lot more connections to be made between different characters, but this is what I got before I got tired.
Louis is a bystander to his abuser’s abuse of claudia and thus fails to protect her as both he and claudia feel is owed but to call this “participation” is not true. i just find it striking that even amidst the section of iwtv audience that understands and discusses the show as about patriarchy and abuse, there are shades of the same rhetoric applied to louis by armand and then daniel: the idea that louis’s inability to stop loving lestat is equivalent to him “picking” lestat over claudia
Louis failed Claudia by turning her imo. Some people in fandom think it's a metaphor for CSA, which I don't know how to feel about. Thoughts?
i actually really strenuously disagree w this idea that louis failed claudia by turning her . if he didn’t turn her she would have died. claudia’s entire arc and story (and louis’s with her) is coming to accept and embrace herself and her nature, imperfect as it is, in direct opposition to and rebellion against her abusers, lestat and armand, who both articulate to her that she’s a mistake and an abomination (a botched vampire!) and should never have been mad win the first place.
i don’t think her turning is a metaphor for anything except birth . there is incestuous enmeshment between her and louis but that’s complex and distinct and emerges as a product of abuse and the patriarchal family relationship. the scene that is an early and inappropriate insinuation of sexuality from parent to child is w lestat in the lovers lane scene
and this is the most honest that any story has been about rape to me. I’m 89% sure. you know how it is

also also the way naruto and itachi are foils when it comes to their love/duty to protect sasuke. because itachi values sasuke’s life above his mental state. which is why he’s okay with a tortured brainwashed sasuke as long as sasuke is alive. meanwhile naruto values sasuke’s mental state above his life. and this is why he accepts the idea of he and sasuke killing each other in a fight but isn’t okay with the idea of sasuke suffering alone

pathologic is a GOOD game because whenever you die theater kids immediately reenact your death. Just like real life
