So this might seem odd but do we just... not do home brand cocoa powder any more? I checked Woollies, Coles and Aldi and the cocoa powder is all fancy branded shit, like Cadbury and Darryl Lea brand cocoa powder. What the fuck is going on. There's no "we are out of cocoa powder" notices or empty homebrand shelves or anything, the home brand stuff is just gone and everything arranged as if it was never there. I feel like I'm being gaslit about cocoa powder. Is it coming back or are we just pretending it never existed. It DID exist. I have always bought home brand cocoa powder.
Woolies says they have it:
https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/311782/woolworths-cocoa-powder
Same with Coles:
Might have to ask our friendly and helpful staff.
Oh good, it turns out I'm just terrible at using the website. It wouldn't show up for me for some reason even though it usually does.
I see it's currently unavailable, but that tends to be true of a lot of stock these days.
Also! I have said it before but it frustrates me so badly that it deserves its own post.
Stratt would have sent Grace if he had a wife and kids. Stratt would have forced him onto the mission if he had a beautiful family and a dog that loved him and parents he visited every weekend. At the end of the day it was always, always going to be the sacrifice of the few for the good of the many, and it would have made functionally very little difference if it was one man or a whole household. That line was not for her, or the crew, or any of the gaurds that she would eventually send after him. That line was for Grace, not to try to convince him that his life had no meaning, but to force him to confront that he had nothing to hide behind, to strip away his selfless defences before he could fall back on them, to lay out the problem as she saw it; him versus the world, him versus humanity. The reason that him 'pretending this is about the children' upsets her is because she has already tried to dismiss that, she has already hit that point, and the fact that he's returning to it with semantics tells her everything she needs to know.
I’ve been meaning to draw a companion piece to my Fire Nation train print for AGES, and this year was the perfect year to revisit the Gaang! ☺️ Debuting at my SDCC artist alley table HH-24!
Had to come back to post the side-by-side because I’m obsessed. (I did that first one in 2019! The fulfillment of a seven year prophecy. 😱)
what is your minimum criteria for considering something canon?
when it appears on screen
when it’s filmed, even if it doesn’t air
when it’s in the script, even if it’s not filmed
when it’s documented in an official show bible
when the show runner shares the backstory / details
when an actor/writer shares the backstory / details
other (in tags/comments)
Look. Star Trek is my oldest canon. There are so many Star Trek shows and movies out there, with so many contradictions, that there's stuff that was shown on screen that I don't consider canon, because it contradicts another thing shown on screen that I like better. They can't both be canon, so.
It's important to note that Chekhov's Gun was not originally about foreshadowing, but a piece of advice to playwrights about how every element in a play should have narrative relevance. The corollary to Chekhov's Gun is that if a gun mounted on the wall in act 1 is never used at all in the entirety of the play, then it should be omitted from the play entirely.
also very true
Very funny example of writing advice that is very specific to its medium getting overapplied outside its scope. Can you imagine how awful set design would be if people tried to apply this to movies. 60 minute post credits scene in the Matrix where Neo has to fire every gun that appears in the "lots of guns" scene
i just got the "see where your blood has gone!" email from giving blood but it glitched and just showed me my current location. which. theyre not wrong. that is where most of my blood is
See the thing about Stratt putting all media ever in the Hail Mary is that it isn’t just for lolz or to keep the crew entertained, it always struck me as something deeply sad. Because even if all the crew survived, there was no way they could consume all possible media ever, language barriers alone would present a problem. And even then, they had a job to do and focus on first (which could have theoretically taken decades of work to figure out) so they wouldn’t have much use for The Great Gatsby or a week’s worth of poorly written amateur Guatemalan experimental opera. Let us remember that Stratt is practical and true utilitarian Instead, I think it was another part of the Hail Mary. If the scientists failed, if the Earth died, then what? Everything would have been completely lost. Art, music, film, history. Destroyed. Without a single living soul to remember it by. It would be as if all of humanity had never existed.
But if it survived? If other alien civilizations discovered traces of humanity? Then the memory of mankind could live on and be remembered. What better way to do that than to send everything (literally everything, the art, the music, the science, the history) out as far as humanly possible so that it might connect with someone else in the universe? It would be a long shot, a Hail Mary, but it was the best chance that humanity had to be remembered
Just reread Fugitive Telemetry and upon a reread I think Murderbot is a tiny bit misinterpreting Senior Officer Indah's behavior towards it. Murderbot thinks it's because it's a SecUnit, which is obviously not wrong, but I think there's another facet of this which isn't on Murderbot's radar: once Indah starts thinking of it as a person, she's probably thinking of it as This Arrogant Asshole From the Corporation Rim who thinks Preservation Security are a bunch of incompetent hippies, tells them how to do their jobs and keeps complaining about them not having the dystopian levels of mass surveillance that it's come to expect from working in the CR, and is upset that they said no to giving it access to a bunch of data that violates privacy laws.
I can see how, from the perspective of a cop who has grown up in Preservation culture, this must be incredibly annoying, and means even setting aside any prejudices over a SecUnit being a deadly weapon, it kind of comes across to Indah as someone who she can't trust to follow basic standards of professional ethics if it thinks it knows better.
And Murderbot doesn't really consider this as a possibility because it's not used to being seen as a person at all, let alone seen as one by the Corporation Rim, so the idea that someone else would see it as a Corporate Person just never crosses its mind.
Yessss, this is especially clear in this exchange:
[ID: two photos of a passage from Fugitive Telemetry that read:
"Yes, I've had experience with investigating suspicious fatalities in controlled circumstances."
Indah's gaze wasn't exactly skeptical. "What controlled circumstances?"
I said, "Isolated work installations."
Her expression turned even more grim. "Corporate slave labor camps."
I said, "Yes, but if we call them that, Marketing and Branding gets angry and we get a power surge through our brains that fries little pieces of our neural tissue."
Indah winced. Mensah folded her arms, her expression a combo of "are you satisfied now" and "get on with it."
End ID]
Indah absolutely is looking at MB as a snobby Corporate Person, with the way she sneers out 'corporate slave labor camps,' like MB was intentionally sugar-coating the reality of CR slave labor camps, as if it and any other SecUnits were the ones making the decision to enslave the human workers on their contracts. She clearly forgot (or never fully understood before) that MB was a slave from the moment it came online, and one that was routinely tortured for literal thought crimes. A slave with no end of indenture to work towards or any amount of pay to slowly try to save up to buy its freedom, no future except an endless expanse of violence and pain. If MB uses a softer term like 'isolated work installation' it is because it learned the hard way not to tell it like it is, and when called out on that, it throws the true horror of its existence within the CR into Indah's face (much like it did with the memories of governor module punishments when it first met ART and ART also initially treated it like it was some inherently evil corporate actor).
I think you're right that in the intervening weeks (months?) since it arrived at the end of Exit Strategy, Indah had learned from her first mistake of treating MB like Not A Person (the deadly weapon comment early on for which Pin-Lee was going to get her removed from her position of authority). But she still doesn't trust MB, and unless you get that very direct reminder of how horribly the CR actually treats constructs, I think it can be all too easy to see that SecUnits are physically powerful and then mentally equate that to them having any kind of actual power in those slave labor camps they're forced to guard.
Indah's change in attitude throughout FT is one of my favorite secondary character arcs, and I have to think this specific conversation, in addition to just working through the murder case with MB, was a big turning point for her. She went from 'this isn't even a person, it's a weapon'/'fine it's a person, but it's a bad corporate person who uses its gun arms to enslave poor innocent human workers' to 'oh you really are a person who just wants to help, and you get shot in the back by bigots even when you do help, and I will help you press charges if you want' over the course of basically one criminal investigation. And Martha Wells is able to show us that progression even though MB itself doesn't seem to be fully aware of it!! Gosh I just love this book <3
All the "Austen novels explained badly" Tabloid Covers
Most of the original text is from this post by @redwooding
Re-did the Pride & Prejudice one to look more tabloid-y and changed John Thorpe's caption to the funny version. Note: gigs during the regency period was a type of carriage.
Grace explaining sheepishly to Eridian linguists that the reason he uses different pronouns for Rocky than for the rest of the population is that he reflexively defaulted to assigning Rocky the same grammatical and social gender that he himself uses, in a way that has historical precedent but in modern English is considered somewhat chauvinistic and backward, and he's not proud of it but also the habit is pretty deeply ingrained now and unless Rocky objects it's probably easier to just keep on as he has been...
and immediately being informed lol. lmao. do not even worry about it. you have no idea what kind of buck wild grammatical constructs Rocky has invented for you. everyone else addresses you as foreigner/scholar. they're somehow managing to refer to you as their sibling, ward, and semidivine culture hero at the same time every time they talk about you.
I normally try to keep this blog strictly about the glory that is art history, but I can’t avoid sharing a good architecture pun!
(Yes, I love puns)
They all used to say I was the luckiest.
I was so pretty. My boyfriend was this super sweet, sensitive, popular guy. I got good grades without having to spend all my time studying. My parents weren't anybody special in town but they had enough money that we never had to really worry about paying the bills.
I was lucky. I was lucky. I was.
My parents died the same night that I did. They had the funeral while I was still dead too. My aunt from out of town arranged it after they found my body later on, in the fridge. I don't... remember much. I'm kind of glad. I don't think I want to remember that night. But everything else, even from before then, feels different too.
I don't think they told my aunt that I'm not dead anymore? Did anyone tell her?
How do you tell someone that?
My boyfriend's trying to be supportive. I'm not making it easy, I know. I'm not trying hard enough to get back to who I used to be.
There were times before I died when I would sit in front of the mirror and it felt like a stranger was looking back at me. Everything was just so hollow. I thought I wanted to die. But it would always pass. Usually my mom or someone would come and get me and drag me back, and I'd be myself again. That lucky girl.
Who the hell was she?
I didn't want to die. Dying was awful. I just didn't want to keep living like that. That girl. She had to die.
That can't be right. My life was good. I miss my parents so much, I'm not relieved that they're gone? Only a monster would feel that way.
I'm so hungry. All the time. But it's different. It's not like when my mom would put me on a diet, or when I'd stare into the mirror, or when I'd watch my boyfriend inhale a double cheeseburger and choke on my dry salad (dressing has too many calories). That kind of hunger was like trying to swallow past a weed that was rooted in my stomach.
This feels like that weed is finally gone and I could eat and eat. Like I might finally know what it's like to be full.
But nothing fills it. Definitely not the salads, but I don't want the double cheeseburger either. I just don't know what it could be.
That's a lie.
There's definitely something wrong with me. I wish it felt more like it was wrong with me, and not like something clicking into place. I know what I want but if I do go get it, what then? What if I get caught? Even if I don't, it's not like I can keep going that way.
Maybe it's just... once. Maybe it's a resurrection thing. So much freaky stuff happens in this town and no one ever seems to know how it all works, right? Who's to say? It could just be a one time deal, and then I'll be satisfied, and no one will ever have to know.
Oh god. I don't think I'm ever going back to normal. Normal people don't sneak out to the cemetery in the dead of night and dig up their parents graves and... and...
It had to be them, though. For the first time I think, anyway. So that I could keep a part of them. So that I could still be with them in a way. So that I could sink my teeth into them and rip them apart and carve out what was inside because that needed to happen.
I loved my parents. I did. I do. I'm not a monster. I'm not.
My boyfriend's got this friend. He's a little different. Eccentric. His family's rich, I think? He lives just on the edge of town. My boyfriend has so many friends, but I was always a bit surprised with this guy. He's... well he's really gay? Like rich theater goth guy gay? That sounds bad, but I mean. A guy like my boyfriend, friends with a man like that?
It was just surprising. My boyfriend doesn't exactly speak kindly about him behind his back.
But he knows lots of things about this town and the freaky shit that happens, so it actually does make sense. We usually go to him when there's some problem we don't know how to solve. I'm sure my boyfriend talked to him after I died.
He's been watching me lately.
I mean ordinarily I'd be flattered. He's like every high school girl's moody gothic antihero crush until he opens his mouth, and I was not immune to Edward Cullen in my day. In fact I was sort of notorious for always dating guys who turned out to be gay.
But like. Again, he's really gay, and I haven't exactly been bringing my A game to the personal hygiene routine, so I doubt he's looking at me for those reasons.
Oh god oh god he asked about... he knows about... that...?
I panicked! I just -- told him all of it?
Oh fuck he's going to tell the cops and they're going to put me away and then everyone will know me as the fucking ghoul who ate her parents corpses oh god baby jesus mother of mercy why did I ADMIT IT???
He... didn't tell anyone?
Something's wrong. He's being weirdly cool about all of this. There's no possible way that he doesn't have a problem with it. I'm eating human corpses. Everyone would have a problem with that unless they're fucked up.
He might be fucked up actually. Now that I'm thinking about it.
Not that I can exactly throw stones.
Is it wrong that I'm glad he's being nice about it? This shouldn't be allowed, right? I should probably warn someone that he's being nice about it, but how could I explain?
And... I don't want to get him into trouble. Everything's been so difficult. There's no one I can talk to. But he's so easy to talk to, and even though I wait and wait for him to tell me it's wrong, he just... doesn't.
What kind of monster is he?
Oh he's a vampire.
He's a vampire?!?
No friggin' way.

Yes I know you mistrust the banks, milord, and I don't blame you, but their Vault Wizards are specially trained to prevent dragons from detecting large amounts of gold. I cannot emphasize enough that it's a full-time job employing multiple specialists, I'm not trying to be humble here but it's not something that just the court magician and I can set up a couple wards for on the weekends and call it good.
It's, it's just that dragons are the primordial embodiment of avarice wrought into fire and flesh. They are truly, supernaturally good at finding large amounts of valuables, that's why the big mines hire those Dragon Scouts to go sniff out their lairs and mark them on the maps as potential mining ventures. You know, in case someone slays the relevant dragon. Which doesn't happen often because, milord, they are simply not that easily slain.
No I know you've hired many knights, blooded warriors and true. Yes, I was there when you gave the ten most impressive ones their special sashes. Very grand, very high honors, of course. Ehm. It's just, none of them have ever actually faced a dragon. Yes no I know Sir Edbert says he did but Sir Edbert is rather notoriously prone to exaggerated and tragically unverifiable tales---
Well no milord of course I would not doubt the word of a sworn knight. Perhaps his sobriety, but not his word, as such.
The point is that the grand treasury, while surely grand and a very special notion, is just... it is mayhaps not the ideal way of handling the realm's finances? Perhaps a series of smaller vaults, capped well below the dangerous wealth threshold at which gold is known to whet the appetite of colossal winged harbingers of death, in different corners of the realms or...?
No, I, yes well I do realize that will impede anyone's interests in coming into the vault to hurl around the gold coins and go "whee, I'm so rich!" I am aware of its deficiencies as a plan in that regard. No, I see I've misjudged a few things.
Actually, thinking on it, milord, I truly believe what you need is a fresh set of skilled wizards on this job. The court magician and I, we cannot keep up with your visionary thinking. We're too old-fashioned. But the wizards revolutionizing the eldritch academies seem to be more on this sort of level. I hear they've made some truly remarkable choices in terms of outsourcing all of their spellwork to the Ever-Whispering Void, such that it takes mere minutes for them to set up an entire defensive array. That's just the sort of innovative thinking you require.
Though it will grieve the court magician and I to leave your service, perhaps this is a sign that retirement is overdue. So I'll just... be moving further away from the big pile of gold... in the opulent, dome-shaped building with the crystal skylight... best wishes.
When I see people say "abolish copyright, it only serves big corporations," I imagine saying, "The whole system of employment only serves big corporations....so abolish wages. People appreciate service workers and will tip them even if they don't have to."
Like. Clearly you have not tried to pay the bills on book sales.
We definitely need to reform the copyright system so they actually protect small creators instead of Disney, but a state of total anarchy has never yet been demonstrated to protect the vulnerable. In the absence of regulation, the strong oppress the weak. Bad regulation only helps them oppress the weak more, but no regulation is not the answer.
How to do that is a complicated question. I have some ideas. But I feel like once the end goal is protecting the individual who does the creative work, it's not that hard to brainstorm better solutions.
