I'm reading a study on how nurses define the term 'drug seeking', and what makes them more likely to put the 'drug-seeker' label on a patient's charts and. well. let me just throw down some quotes

"Needy, unable to cope" (<- you try coping with chronic pain)

"Comfort seeking" (<- you mean.. having a preference for not being in pain.. how criminal)

"Using or trying to obtain drugs on a long-term, chronic base" (<- do you understand what 'chronic pain' means.)

"Asking for pain med then returning to sleep."

"States he’s level 10 pain, but does not appear to be in pain (or ‘5= on appearance)." (<- it is well-known that chronic pain patients tend not to display pain in the same way as acute pain patients)

"Dramatic response to pain" (<- notice how this directly contradicts the comment above. you cannot win)

"Gets IV med, then leaves unit to smoke or walk around" (<- wow requiring medication and then going off to do something you needed pain meds to be able to do is so suspicious)

the article itself put it best when it says: “some comments depict patients trying to apply sound pain management principles, such as continuing to take medication for persistent pain”. no wonder all the other literature on the matter says that women of colour are the most likely group to be labelled drug-seeking. this shit is entirely vibes-based (read: based on the prejudices of nurses and doctors)

If youre a closeted person somewhere out there thinking "I want to transition but it would be less progressive/unique/countercultural for me to be that gender instead of this one" please know that you are a real person not a character in a narrative and cant live your life based on what is good media representation. You are real you can only be yourself and theres no moral weight to any identity over another

Liberal transphobes enjoy positioning trans identities as regressive compared to cis queerness or like non-transitioning transness or anything else they can leverage to make transphobia look progressive and I think its easy to absorb that message subconciously. But in real life we just are what we are and no ranking of validity can change the fact that you have an identity that is NOT chosen and is just your unchangeable truth. Not only should you not have to live a life dictated by what is most countercultural to identify as or whatever but also: being trans is extremely countercultural and feminist and leftist to begin with and theyre only trying to convince you otherwise bc theyre bigots

hi - i would like to have a discussion. i am 100% okay with being corrected and would especially like to know how i may be unintentionally buying into transmisogynistic or otherwise harmful rhetoric. i also just got off work so i apologize if my phrasing is weird.

my understanding is that classes at the top of the (gender, race, class, etc.) hierarchy are more exclusive than the ones below, because the positions at the top grant privileges that people want to gatekeep. think of the one-drop rule, whereby people with any black ancestry, no matter how far removed, were legally classified as black (of course, this also had to do with people seeing blackness as a "contaminant" on their "pure" white blood). it is not impossible for people to assimilate into a dominant class, especially if they do it by subordinating another. whether or not someone belongs to a particular class (and is granted the privileges associated with it) is often also context-dependent, especially when the classes are socially constructed (like race and gender).

all this to say, i don't think trans men are automatically granted male privilege. to be clear, trans women definitely don't experience male privilege, as they are usually ousted from the male class as children as soon as their peers feel as if there's something "different" about them, long before they even come out (this is also why it would be false to say they are "male socialized"). whether or not trans men benefit from male privilege, imo, has to do with the extent to which they have socially transitioned and are regarded as transmasc and/or male. i feel as if it's similar to how mixed white people are regarded; whether or not they have white privilege depends on whether they are seen as white. i don't mean this in the context of daily interactions but instead in a structural sense.

however, it's undeniable to me that transmasc people have the privilege of not being transmisogynized. i don't know if there is a difference between male privilege and privilege from not being transmisogynized - i imagine there's a lot of overlap.
