Knights of the Round Table
This was just me having some fun and it snowballing a little 😅
It started with me wanting to paint a young Arthur. Then Lancelot who as I was drawing was to be a contrast to Arthur’s look. But then I obviously had do David Lowery/Dev Patel/Malgosia Turzanska’s Gawain with his iconic yellow cloak. But then it didn’t make sense to draw Gawain and not Bedivere or Cei which obviously means I couldn’t leave out Trystan. Then I thought wouldn’t it be fun if Galahad was around, which meant if I did a lineup, instead of just illustrations, they’d have to be from the same moment in time which meant I had to play around with ages leading to an older Lancelot so that Galahad could exist simultaneously with the others while allowing me to keep a younger Arthur but also needing me to keep Gawain fairly young too.
Though Arthur was probably from around the 5th century, due to the knightly ideals and in order to justify Lancelot and Galahad’s existence (our french boy Lancelot first appeared in stories during the 12th c., I had to make sure one of the foundations of my designs were 12th century armour. But I still wanted it to echo the 5th century origins while keeping things feeling mythic and like a fantasy rather than realistic. I also absolutely adored the costume design and overall art direction of the Green Knight. So I based this drawing of Gawain on that, then took inspiration from that and byzantine art like they did for the others while adding my own twists and more fun adventure like feel. I also really wanted Galahad to feel like a saint in one of those gold paintings. Then I realized that I had to do the character designs so that I could do the illustrations properly... Which is how I ended up with a lineup 😅
