matthias helvar’s character arc is actually so fucking beautiful because he actively chooses to change his viewpoint of the world. he instinctually thinks something bad, and then stops and reminds himself to give it a second thought. he sees in hindsight how his old life was poisoning him. he wants to help others who had been in his position, even if they can’t see the poison on their own yet.

i love how you read matthias through the others’ povs in the first half of six of crows and he’s this unstable boy who hates all of them, wants at least two of them dead, and seems one bad hour away from betraying them all and crawling back to his genocidal maniac commander daddy.

and then you get to matthias’s chapters and he’s just,

not sure if anyone has realized this but i’m annotating my copy of six of crows and crooked kingdom, and one of the silly things im doing is highlighting every “no mourners / no funerals”…

and the last time it’s said before the final job in crooked kingdom it gets interrupted before anyone can say “no funerals”

and then… well, there is a funeral
