Just call me
seven months sober

Today I am 4 months dry.
Today I am 4 months sober from alcohol. Holy shit. What. Amazing. I am so grateful. To celebrate myself, I treated myself to special lunch on break: vegan pasta with cashew cheese, a coconut pie, and coconut water. I worked a REALLY long day today so I also treated myself to special dinner: vegan buffalo wrap, vegan cookies and cream cake, and a peach izze. I am so proud, I am so grateful, I am so lucky, I am so happy. Today, September 1st 2016, I am 4 months sober. 123 days.
Nonbinary people who prefer he/him or she/her pronouns are legit and still nonbinary, pass it on.
Reading all of those things about ‘what will happen when you quit drinking,’ they warned about feeling your feelings again. I thought to myself, “nah, I’m super in touch with my emotions, that won’t happen to me when I sober up.”
Anyways, I’m now being hit from all directions with all emotions in all places at most times.
Wouldn’t trade it.
sometimes you say or do bad things while you’re in an awful mental place. sometimes you say things that are rude or uncalled for or manipulative. and i’m not going to hold that against you. mental illness is hard, and no one is perfect. but once you’re through that episode, you need to take steps to make amends. you need to apologize.
“i couldn’t help it, i was having a bad episode” is a justification, not an apology.
“i’m so fucking sorry, i fucked up, i don’t deserve to live, i should stop talking to anyone ever, i should die” is a second breakdown and a guilt trip. it is not an apology.
when you apologize, the focus should be on the person you hurt. “i’m sorry. i did something that was hurtful to you. even if i was having a rough time, you didn’t deserve to hear that,” is a better apology. if it was a small thing, you can leave it at that.
if you caused significant distress to the other person, this is a good time to talk about how you can minimize damage in the future. and again, even if it is tempting to say you should self-isolate and/or die, that is not a helpful suggestion. it will result in the person you’re talking to trying to talk you out of doing that, which makes your guilt the focus of the conversation instead of their hurt.
you deserve friendship, and you deserve support. but a supportive friend is not an emotional punching bag, and mental illness does not absolve you of responsibility for your actions. what you say during a mental breakdown doesn’t define you. how you deal with the aftermath though, says a lot.
This is the most carefully-nuanced discussion of this I think I have ever seen. Thank you for writing this.
Take a shower, wash off the day. Drink a glass of water. Make the room dark. Lie down and close your eyes. Notice the silence. Notice your heart. Still beating. Still fighting. You made it, after all. You made it, another day. And you can make it one more. You’re doing just fine.

I am so grateful for the different self-care changes I’ve been making.

amazing how much cleaning there is to catch up on after being drunk for two years straight
Holy shit. I have had this blog over a year. And I'm only at 3 months sober.
@free-to-be-v
I have 99 days!!!
Over 3 months! This is the longest I've been sober since I took my first drink. I'm so proud. I'm so lucky. 7 August 2016. Day 99.
Choose. You have the power to choose. If you don’t like where you are, make one small step in a different direction. You are not stuck unless you want to be.

hey like, if you happen to do something abusive because of your mental illness
you still gotta apologize for it????
you still have to accept responsibility???
you can’t expect the people around you to just suck it up when you hurt them because you’re mentally ill.
spiraling further and self-deprecation/calling urself a monster also isn’t an apology. an apology does not involve another person comforting you for your harmful actions.
same with claiming that you are a failure and are doomed to never change or improve. Apology should not involve the other person comforting you and rooting for you, and essentially being your cheerleader.
Same if you claim that not doing abusive things to someone repeatedly is “so hard” while also refusing to examine your behavior, to create a plan of action to help you cope with your mental illness in a healthy way, or by refusing to seek help in any shape or form. Twice as bad if you expect the person you abused to be your mental health therapist/processor.
