The government has systematically starved NASA of funds since the Nixon Administration and forced it to rely on private companies and/or obsolete Soyuz capsules instead of developing a replacement for the shuttle or its own long-range spacecraft.  

And the reason for that is simple:  the average American knows so little about science, and how many benefits the basic research that the moonshot produced in terms of technological advances, that they think space exploration and development doesn’t deserve the money.  It’s why Gil Scot-Heron’s “Whitey on the Moon” drives me crazy, because even then, even in the 1960′s, the moon landing had nothing to do with systemic poverty, and cancelling the program would not have fed, clothed, or housed a single child.

Systemic poverty, systemic bigotry, and the systematic gutting of science education in this country are all due to the Republican mania for “starving the beast” and fulfilling Grover fucking Norquist’s goal of “shrinking government until it can be drowned in a bathtub.”  The space program is not at fault, and I am sick unto death of seeing well-meaning progressives blaming it for society’s ills. .

The entire private industry that exists around servicing jails and prisons is disgusting and having worked in it I can tell you that the people who would lose out the most by the end of America’s mass incarceration regime absolutely deserve to lose from that.

Some of the biggest receivers of tax dollars in the country, outside of I guess defense contractors, and they’re all conservative small government types, fighting hard to downsize the public sector except where the public exercises discipline and punishment, which they desperately want to expand, and which they have a direct financial interest in expanding.

I’d been thinking about this, at this point it’s probably a bit of a cliche observation but it really is an amazing cultural dynamic to think about how when the right says they’re for “small govt” they don’t literally mean lowering the amount of govt spending, only lowering the spending into things that would widely help people (e.g. public healthcare or education) while never really against spending on things that actively harm people (cops and the military). Of course they’re making more of a profit off the latter than the former.

OP’s statement implies that there is a way of acting that will convince the bigots that gay people are not satanic perverts.

There isn’t. Every single method has been tried: Being quiet. Blending in. Acting like middle class suburban straight couples. Being closeted and only finding partners who will keep the secret. Having one partner publicly take the role of another gender. (And then acting like a suburban straight couple.) Being ALONE, and just pining quietly for years.

None of it works. When the straights figure out who the gay people are, even if they are abstinent and solitary, there’s a swarm of bigots ready to denounce all queer people as evil, as corrupting children, as causing the downfall of society. A swarm of bigots ready to physically attack them to drive them off. 

There is no polite enough, no ordinary enough, no invisible enough to keep us safe.

So fuck that.

Queer people should act like they want to act. If part of that is going all in for the “I am your worst hellscape nightmare” tropes, that’s part of reclaiming the right to be full members of society. 

And queer people of color have at least twice as much right to ignore all the stupid “don’t do that because you’ll offend people!!!” rules.

What offends those people is queer people of color existing, not whatever they did that got them noticed. The bigots just like to pretend that the issue is “I don’t want to see it” instead of “I don’t want the person who did that, to exist.”

If you’re gonna have an ignorant American attitude then please only stay on American posts. No one in North Europe has an AC in their houses. Stores, animal shelters, elderly houses, no one has AC. the houses are designed to keep the heat in. The people are not accustomed to the heat. A sudden climate shift like this is extremely dangerous to older people and babies specifically.

There are programs being run to inform elderly people what to do to not die in this heat. There was a heatwave in the Netherlands in 2010 in which approximately 500 more elderly people passed away than normally.

One thing people don’t often appreciate is that the southern US states are along the same latitude as the Middle Eastern deserts, rather than northern Europe. We’re not competing with Texas, we’re competing with northern Canada. If Saskatoon can’t handle Mexican weather, London can’t handle Middle-Eastern weather. It’s not built for it at all.
