Talia Al Ghul 🐉
«Will I ever be more than a tool in my father's hand?»
"we all want something that will last forever. but what we get is love." nightwing (1996) #112
not now honey, mommy’s yearning for something that once was and will never be again
i like to consider myself the 'eric bogosian' of my tumblr mutuals
Wish I saw more fans acknowledge that Talia being treated as sympathetic because "it's all she knows" and "it's part of the cycle of abuse" when raising Damian in the League is still getting a bad version of Talia. It is not all she knows -- she chose to leave the League -- she did not want to contribute to the cycle. She left Ra's behind, she left Ra's and Bruce's war and was tired of being a pawn between them! She got out! We don't need a version of her that is just more helpless so that her son can repeat the same steps.
Like raising Damian in the League still requires erasing all of Talia's character development and independence for the sake of a male character. The sympathetic version is not as bad as 'evil infanticidal stereotype Talia' but like. The bar is in hell man, c'mon. It's still pretty much based on that version.
where did mar go???
i think a lot of meta issues people have with jason is because they try so damn hard to analyse the text from a watsonian perspective and go why doesn’t he do x thing already when the reality is. editorial. sales. writers are limited in their own knowledge and it is plain as day in their writing — the same way it is with so many other characters that people conveniently ignore. but especially with jason, you also really need a doylist perspective because his story is interwoven with two characters that dc cannot afford and will never permanently mess with, but also that his character itself was historically fucked over by editorial on several layers.
so yeah, i find a lot of discourse or criticism against jason very ??? because the answer is right there. you just do not want to acknowledge it.

i know some people do like the idea that jason was indeed the one who pushed garzonas but personally… i don’t. because i think that jason being innocent of this one thing— and bruce then immediately leaping to the conclusion that jason basically committed homicide as robin— that the accusation from your father over his Line and Moral Code is absolutely devastating. it’s the catalyst for all that comes after. because the trust between the two is now shattered by bruce. jason’s security with batman is compromised because now jason is grouped with the people who batman sets out to stop.
so you are 14 years old. your father thinks you killed a man. your father is Batman. you have seen what Batman does to criminals. you are witness to the sorts of brutality Batman is capable of. you are not safe. you believe that the odds are that a random woman you have never met is better than Batman who thinks you are not only capable of killing but believed— even if momentarily— that you did. you run off and away from the man who could, would and had assumed The Worst of you. you meet this woman, she seems okay. you do not have the full picture. she is actually one of the people batman has grouped you with. she sells you out to a villain who has committed The Worst a hundred times over. you die. you later become what your father accused you of.
read the diplomat's son again and god. this is. the comic ever because jim starlin really wrote a comic in which jason witnesses firsthand the failures of the system and how sometimes they just straight up dont work and fail the victims and like. it's the perfect setup for perhaps developing themes of class and systemic injustice and perhaps it might be even setting up jason to reckon with his role as robin and perhaps how he contributes to a system that fails people like him Consistently but no the takeaway jim starlin wants you to come away with is "isn't this kid so evil and stupid and reckless. dont you want him dead" and its like. dude idgaf about that can we please talk about the systemic failures. anybody in here wanna discuss the systemic failures. anyone.
i also have More Thoughts on how tds centers felipe's death as "more important" than gloria's but i cannot get into that right now it's nearly 2am
more talia art cause she’s a cutie and i wanted to experiment on a lighting thing
the power imbalance between bruce and his mentees is especially emphasized with jason because of their differences in class and jason’s lack of support system outside of bruce (which nearly all the other bats had except jason) likeeeeee. me when i make the homeless kid that i took in from the streets fully dependent on me to the point of his own detriment
