The knife was hardly more than a hairâs-width away from his throat. Elysa saw it, Evalin saw it, Gavrielâs saw itâŚEveryoneâs attention was on that knife. It was like backing away from a dangerous animal, Elysa thought. No sudden movements.Â
âI beg your pardon?â The king said, cutting through the heavy silence.
Evalin took a step forward then and said, so, so slowly, âWeâre in love, father. We want to get married.â
The king blinked, the only sign of his confusion. âNo.â
He angled his knife closer, and Evalin put a hand on Elysaâs arm to stop her from running for Gavriel. âFather, please,â Evalin begged. âIt will form an alliance between our two kingdoms.â
âAnd how would they provide aid?â His eyes flashed to Rhoe. âLet us not pretend that you have battalions to spare.â
âGold,â Rhoe said, swallowing. âLet us not pretend that my kingdom does not own troves upon troves of jewels and finery.â
Elysa heard this all distantly, their voices muddled compared to the insistent pounding of her heart. Her eyes could not leave Gavriel, who might as well have been a stranger in that moment. His normally golden skin was pale and slick with sweat. His eyes dark and almost sunken in. Eyes that would not meet hersâŚ
As if reading her thoughts, that tawny gaze that was trained at the floor suddenly lifted to her. He blinked as if just noticing now that she was there.Â
Stay with me, she mouthed.
Gavriel blinked again, the only sign that he understood, before staring back down at the cobblestones. He could not bare to look at her. He wasâŚashamed. Like this was his fault and not hers. She wished she could tell him thatâthat he had nothing to do with this. That he wasnât a liability. She wanted to save himâ
âEvalin, no. I will not let you marry this prince only to save a Fae who stole your sister in the night!â Their father boomed, his harried face turning a stunning shade of red.
âIf I may, Your Majesty, that is not why I am proposingââ
âLike hell it isnât!â
Evalin broke away from her sister. âI donât understand you! If Elysa marries for an alliance, thatâs fine, but why canât I? Iâm at your feet begging to help your country, to take my sisterâs place, and now you shoot it down?â
The king, a sudden picture of ease, waved the knife in the air and asked, âIs there anything else youâd like to add?â
Elysa watched as Evalin went deathly still.Â
No.
This wouldnât be good.
Evalin, donât.
She wanted to scream at her sister, to shake her, to tell her to just let it go. There had to be another wayâthe road doesnât just end like this. She would beg and scream and kill her father to get him free.
But she didnât have the chance before Evalin opened her damned mouth. âYes,â she hissed. âYouâre a fucking hypocrite, and you can kiss my fucking ass.â
âYou are going to regret those words, daughter,â the king snarled, flashing her a signature grin they both shared. Elysa knew what would happen next.Â
She closed her eyes as she silently whispered a prayer.
Let it be quick. Let him be at peace. Please.
Someone roared out in pain. Butâ
It wasnât Gavriel.
Elysa blinked her eyes open, expecting Gavrielâs lifeblood to be splattered all over the grimy stones. Instead, her father was arching in pain, an arrow protruding from his forearm.Â
âElysa!â someone yelled. She turned to find Glaston along the upper balcony of the dungeon, bow still erect in his hands. âGet him!âÂ
She caught the set of keys he tossed midair, tripping over herself as she ran for her love. A memory flashed in her mindâa dream so similar to this moment. She shook her head, willing it away. No. His blood had not spilled yet.Â
âElysa,â Gavriel moaned.
âIâm here,â she said, key shaking as she shoved it into the hole. âLook at me. Iâm right here.â
Out of the corner of her eye she could see Rhoe bringing the king into a chokehold, Evalin and Glaston holding back the hesitant guards, unsure whether to listen to the Crown Prince or help the king.
Click. Click. Both manacles came loose, and Gavriel ripped them from his hands, falling to his knees. He coughed, blood spurting from his lips.
Elysa grabbed his arm, tugged at it. âGavriel. We need to go. Now.â
She turned, looking toward her father. His face was red, eyes bulging as he struggled for air. âIâm sorry, father.â
Her eyes met Rhoeâs. A question laid in his eyes. She shook her head. As much as she wished it, no, he could not die. She could not watch that. The country could not survive it, no matter how much of a tyrant he was.Â
Glaston came to Gavrielâs other side and hoisted him to his feet, leading them out the doors. They followed the passageways, walls flickering in torchlight. Elysa was numb, focused solely on the thump-thump-thump of Gavrielâs heart growing stronger by the second.Â
Heâs here heâs here heâs here
Glaston held the doors open, cool afternoon air brushing past, dissolving the sweat on her brow. âBe safe,â he said.Â
She stared at her brother, his eyes glowing with some unnamed emotion. âThank you,â she whispered hoarsely. âTake care of Evalin. Please.â
He gave the slightest dip of his chin and slammed the door shut behind them.
~~~
The cabin in the woods. Please let it still be there.
That was the only place she could think of where they could stop and rest, just for a moment. A moment. That was all they needed. Despite Gavrielâs face gaining life and color by the second, Elysaâs eyelids were so, so heavy. Almost as heavy as the weight of Gavriel against her, still struggling to get his feet underneath him.Â
âWhere are we going?â he rasped.Â
Elysa adjusted her grip on his arm. âThe cabin.â
They both were silent as they trappled through the woods, leaves and twigs crunching ceaselessly beneath their feet. Gods, they were louder than a team of horses. The fog was thick and heavy, though, so one had to have the keen eyes of a Fae to see them more than ten feet off. A crow cawed from a branch right beneath her head, such a startling noise compared to the rasps of her and Gavrielâs breathing. She jumped the slightest bit, dipping her head out of instinct, but it was enough to send her and Gavriel to the forest floor.Â
She coughed as dirt sprayed her eyes, her face.Â
âAre you okay?â Gavriel asked from above her.
âYeah,â she wheezed. âIâmâŚfine.â
âIt was just a bird, you know.â The slightest bit of a smirk formed on Gavrielâs face, but his eyes didnât continue the forced action.Â
She sat up and the blood went rushing from her head. âI know.â
The smirk instantly disappeared, replaced with concern shining in his tawny eyes. âLet me carry you. Weâre almost there.â
She didnât refuse as the warm familiarity of his arms wrapped underneath her knees, around her back. As his scent wrapped around her in an embrace of love and concern. Her eyes drooped before she could stop them.Â
And she was swept into sweet oblivion.Â
a/n PLEASE READ: hi, everyone. sooo I guess I should address the elephant in the roomâI havenât posted in six months. and for that I am so, so sorry. if iâm being honest, my mental health has not been good. without going into too much detail, just know that I am okay and I am seeking the help I need. but because of this, my writing has suffered. I havenât had any motivation to do the thing that I loved more than anything, and it just stressed me out more than it ever has before. however, I know what it is like to be invested in a fic and have it be discontinued (no disrespect for authors who do this, as it is completely their choice!) and how sad that it. so, I needed to provide closure not only for you, dear readers, but for me, too. I havenât been able to stop thinking about this story in the past couple of months, and I know I would hate myself for never finishing this. I love this more than any of my original works. just know that THIS is not the end. I donât know how long it is going to take, but just know that there is an ending in store for Gavriel and Elysa. like I said, weâre nearing the finish line, so i canât give up now. Iâll try not to take six months this time :) thank you so, so much for being such lovely, wonderful, inspiring readers. I understand and respect that I will lose some of you because of this hiatus, but I still wanted to provide some closure in case you are still in it to win it :) you all mean so much to me. this story wouldnât be here without you <3 - Maya
BEFOREâŚ
Laelia caught Eldon Lochanâs arm that morning, as he walked out of the library. No guards followed him, and Laelia had smartly avoided her own all morning.
       Well.
       As much as she could.
       Which meant that she did not have much time left before they flanked her again.
       Eldon gasped as she pulled him into a darkened hallway, and stuttered out, âLaelia?â As if he expected her to seduce him or something.
       âDonât look so horrified,â she whisper-shouted, hands on her hips. âWeâre hiding.â
       Eldon blinked at the youngest Galathynius princess, then narrowed his eyes. âFrom whom?â
       âGuards, Eldon.â
       âAh, yes, of course.â
       A pause.
       âWhy?â
       Laelia breathed in. âI think I know how to help Eva,â she said at last. âBut I need your help.â When Eldon looked slightly more horrified, Laelia added, âI know Elide and Lorcan have threatened you and practically locked you inside this castle because you disappeared on us and almost got killed-â
       âThatâs one way to put it.â
       âBut I just need some information,â Laelia finished, a hopeful hint to her voice.
       Eldon paused, then cocked his head to the side. âWhat are you planning?â
       The princess watched him warily, and, deciding that she would, indeed, trust him, she finally whispered, âEldon, where can I find the portal to Prythian?â
"Why are you awake right now?" FOR ROWAELIN PLEEASE
enjoy this one!
~~~
Rowan was thoroughly passed out when sound of his phone ringing cut through his peaceful sleep. Normally, he would ignore any call that came for him past twelve, but unfortunately for him, he recognized this ringtone. Aelin had set it herself.
Rowan groaned and peeled his eyes open, grabbing his phone and answering.
âWhy are you awake right now?â he grumbled out as a form of greeting.
âIâm outside your door,â Aelinâs familiar voice came through the phone. âCan you please let me in?â
âWhat the fuckâŚâ Rowan whispered mostly to himself, checking the time. 2:30am. He rolled lazily out of bed, not bothering to shrug on a shirt. He threw open the door, shuffling over the hardwood floor of the halls. He tried to keep quiet for Lorcanâs benefit, knowing his roommate was asleep in the other side of the house.
Rowan reached the front door, not bothering to glance out the peephole before opening it. Aelin Galathynius stood there, wearing an oversized sweatshirt that he was pretty sure she had stolen from him in the past, golden hair tossed up messily. Even in her casual clothes, she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.
He had been best friends with Aelin since sophomore year of college. They had despised each other before then, but being forced to work together on a project had allowed them to come to an understanding that morphed into friendship⌠and eventually, something more. For Rowan at least. He wasnât sure what went through Aelinâs head. She was always thinking, creating, scheming⌠it was one of the reasons he was so drawn to her.
But he had to keep his distance. Aelin was involved with someone, had been dating him for a little over six months. Rowan could still remember the bitter disappointment that cut through him when she had mentioned offhand that she had started seeing a man named Chaol Westfall.
She had seemed happy at first, those first few weeks of puppy love. Rowan had met him on a handful of occasions. Chaol seemed like a nice enough man. Rowan just couldnât help but think that he wasnât right for her. He couldnât put a finger on why exactly. Maybe he was just hoping they were wrong together, though he knew it was wrong of him to think. He should be hoping for her happiness for now and long into the future.
Yet, Rowan couldnât help but watch when they were together. Curled up on the couch side by side, sharing casual kisses and touches, always knowing that they would leave together after a party, would spend the night together in bed. Rowan knew he was jealous. And it was an awful emotion.
Aelin seemed unharmed, but there was something in her eyes. Fatigue, maybe. Sadness? He thought about what she had mentioned about her day. All he could remember was her mentioning she was going out with Chaol that evening.
âIs everything okay?â he asked, voice still raspy from sleep.
She gave a stiff bob of the head. âYeah, itâs just⌠can I come in?â
Rowan nodded, stepping aside and allowing Aelin into his apartment.
âSalvaterre here?â Aelin asked quietly.
âYeah. Asleep. We can head back into my room.â
He knew it was something he should think twice about. Inviting Aelin into his room so late, especially when she was dating someone. It wasnât anything they had thought twice about before in the past. They had slept in the same bed plenty of times before, nothing romantic about it. Still, Aelin had stopped staying the night since she started dating Chaol. Rowan understood, but he still missed her. Missed that extra bit of intimacy.
Rowan shut the door behind them as Aelin plopped down on his unmade bed, hanging her head in her hands with a heavy sigh. He sat down beside her, placing a gentle hand on her back.
âAelin, what happened?â
She released a shuddering breath before sitting up, eyes gleaming in the sliver light of the moon. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
âChaol. He, uh⌠he- we⌠we broke up tonight.â
Rowan blinked, wondering if he had heard her correctly. But⌠he had. It was true. They had broken up.
âOh. Oh gods, Aelin. Iâm sorry. Are you alright?â
Aelin sniffed and wiped at her face. âYes. I think so at least.â She released a small, bitter laugh. âIs it weird to say that Iâm almost relieved?â
Rowan hesitated, not knowing exactly what to say. âWere things⌠bad?â
Aelin shrugged. âIt wasnât really bad. I mean, he wasnât being cruel and we werenât fighting constantly. Itâs just⌠for the past couple months or so, I got this feeling that what we wanted from each other, from the future⌠wasnât the same.â
âWhat happened tonight then?â
âWe were at dinner, and we were talking. Chaol mentioned something about marriage. I tensed up. He noticed. We talked about it on the way home, argued. He said I didnât love him the way he loved me. I said he didnât love me, he loved the version he had created in his head. It got a bit nasty. He called me some not so nice names. We didnât end on the best of terms.â
Rowanâs jaw clenched. The idea of Chaol spewing insults at Aelin made him see red.
âYou didnât tell me,â Rowan said, the fact hurting more than he thought it would. âThat you had been feeling that way for so long.â
Her eyes flickered towards her hands in her lap. âItâs not easy to talk about, you know? I didnât tell anyone about it. Maybe I should have. Someone would have talked some sense into me and we could have made a cleaner end.â
âDo you need me to kick his ass?â Rowan asked.
Aelin released a short laugh. âNo. I can kick his ass all by myself, thank you.â
Rowan wrapped an arm around her and pulled her close. âI know you can, Ace.â
She sniffed and hugged him back, resting her head against his shoulder.
âDo you mind if I stay here tonight?â she asked, looking up at him through her lashes. âI left my apartment to clear my head and I left my keys inside. Lysandra is with Aedion tonight so I wonât get back in until tomorrow morning.â
âOf course, Aelin. Youâre always welcome here.â
She smiled and it warmed Rowanâs heart. She detangled herself from Rowan, taking the right side of the bed, her favorite. Apparently, they hadnât changed since she had started dating Chaol. He took the other side, helping to fix the comforter and get her tucked in properly.
They settled on their sides, facing one another.
âI missed this,â Aelin confessed softly, reaching out and placing a hand on his cheek.
Rowan covered her hand with his own, relishing in her touch. âI missed it too.â
Her eyes fluttered shut, scooting an inch or two closer to him. âI donât know what Iâd do without you, Rowan.â
He smiled, breathing in her flowery scent, admiring the contours of her face highlighted in the cool moonlight. He would do anything for this woman, he knew.
âYouâll never have to find out, Ace.â

The second Elideâs fingers touched his lips Lorcan could no longer think of anything else. Could no longer think of hateful promises of revenge through bared teeth or the pain of a twisted love that flooded poison through his immortal veins.
No, there was only Elide Lochan, the close proximity of her body wedged underneath his broad frame sending his heart racing.
Her dark lashes had mesmerizing shadows casting down her golden cheeks framed by a halo of silken hair, a vision of perfection laid before him. Though she wasnât Fae, he could have sworn she rivaled every unearthly, magical creature he had ever laid eyes on in his bitterly long life. Nothing and no one had ever taken his breath away like she did in this moment.
Whatever words they exchanged in low murmurs refused to linger for more than a passing moment before finally, finally, she reached up, touch dancing across the hard plane of his jaw before her lips found his.
It felt like being bathed in sunlight, the gentleness of her mouth, the warmth of her frame pressing against his. Gods, he had waited for this moment far longer than he would ever admit, even to himself. Her elegant fingers twined through his hair, pulling him closer still, the driving force of need in contrast to his idle state of near shock.
âLorcan,â she exhaled against his lips, sending a shudder through him at the rough desire lining the edge of his name.
