Mirrors to frankenstein in CHNT (just a goofy little post with some things I forgot to mention in the CHNT one, whilst waiting for the post about Frankenstein!) [spoilers for CHNT and the story Frankenstein by Mary Shelly]
Intro: I have been thinking for quite a while now about things similar to Frankenstein within CHNT; and the more I have thought about it, the more I have wanted to write it down. And just to be clear there are very few things that can be thought of as one on one comparisons, but lots that are close enough for them to maybe be meant to be mirroring the story of Frankenstein. Also an important note: this will have some spoilers for the ens of season one CHNT and possibly early season two (idk I am writing this intro before the rest of the post!)
Thoughts/rant/oops info dumping about two things I like, and probably finding unreasonable comparisons where there shouldn’t be any!:
First and foremost, Sydney would be taking the place of Frankenstein’s monster; this is due to the fact that he was brought back from death, and it required science (with the teeniest amount of necromancy!). Although at this point he is a version of the monster whom is trying to be kind whilst in his search.
Jedidiah takes the place of Victor Frankenstein, as a man of science, reviving a man from the dead; also like Victor, Jedidiah is very nervous most of the time, and he is scared of what he’s done/created.
One thing I do not know is who would take the place of Clerval (Victor’s friend who is always worried about him and tries to help, who also dies in the end)? The closest I can really think of (Sydney doesn’t count as he is taking the part of the monster) is probably Yvonne (and perhaps Joshua tagging along), as Yvonne tried to help Jedidiah but couldn’t/can’t. Which might (though I think/hope it doesn’t happen) end with one of them getting killed due to Sydney either directly or indirectly.
Does Tommy the camper (RIP Tommy) take the place of William (the child whom died at the hands of the monster)? As Sydney was trying to help Tommy by holding his jaw together?
In a way does Sydney both take the place of the monster and Elizabeth (the one whom Victor loved, who also died at the hands of the monster)? Because in a way Sydney is hastening his own demise.
I would also propose (if it had made more sense) that Elijah or Adam were the monster, but I think they represent something else, though what I do not currently know (I will write it later if I come across anything that seems like it might relate to their part in this).
Sydney (the monster/creation) searches for love in many places, usually causing devastating things to happen; whilst Jedidiah (Victor/the scientist/the architect of life from death) denies what he’s created as a problem, while also searching for a way to love.
The place of Victor’s father (who tries to distract Victor from his anguish, and also dies at the hands of the monster) is perhaps taken by Lucille? I don’t really know why, it just seems right, to me at least.
In the book Frankenstein, the monster searches to know what love is, he watches a family who lives alone, becomes friends with a blind man, then the man’s family comes home to find the monster talking with the man and they cast him out of the house hunting the monster. I believe the mirror to this maybe being two different things here, one the criticism of Sydney’s announcements by all, and two Elijah with the pyre to be shown love then betrayed. The difference with the pyre is Elijah thought he was doing it for the good of Sydney.
The monster (or in this case Sydney) asks Victor (or Jedidiah) to create another to love him (or perhaps in this case for jedidiah to change (through Adam’s therapy!) to be able to love him).
To cope with what he’s done Victor travels frequently. The mirror to this would be Jedidah leaving camp most of the year to travel, to run from what he created.
The townspeople who apprehended victor and imprisoned him for supposed murder are likely mirrored in CHNT by the arrest of Jedidiah by BEEF II, the difference is Victor was accused of murdering his friend, while jedidiah was accused of necromancy; though they could think of necromancy as murder? As jedidah had said he needed to kill Sydney to revive him.
And now theories as to what’s to come/miscellaneous other thoughts regarding this
After the death of the one victor loves, he hunts the monster; perhaps this means that in CHNT something will happen that will cause Jedidiah to hunt Sydney down? Perhaps metaphorical death of a loved one? Perhaps having to do with whatever Adam is doing for therapy?
Just to be clear, I do not believe a lot of the characters seemingly mirroring characters in Frankenstein who die, means those CHNT characters will necessarily (but we’ll see).
At the end of Frankenstein victor and the monster die; does this mean in the end of CHNT, both Sydney and jedidiah die?
One last thing before I do an outro (why is this saying I misspelled outro???) for the post: in Frankenstein, the story is conveyed through one’s letters to their sister; whereas in CHNT its conveyed through loudspeakers and tape recorders, which leads me to wonder: are we the listeners supposed to be taking the place of the person receiving the letters, writing them, neither, or both at the same time?
