hi sexwitch, i'm sorry if this isn't your wheelhouse but i'm struggling with a vaginal situation. i recently went to have a copper coil put in but they basically couldn't because they couldn't get the speculum opened up me because it hurt my vagina and cervix way too much. they basically shoved things up me without lube and only some anaesthetic gel that did nothing to soothe the pain. i talked to a friend who also has a coil and she's pretty insistent that none of the procedure is supposed to hurt at all and it's left me feeling really confused. was it bad care? is there something wrong with me physically that made it worse?? i know you obviously can't diagnose me or my vagina but i feel like i can't get any good information on what's supposed to be "normal" during a procedure like this. i've never had penetrative sex or penetrative masturbation and i know part of it is just not using the muscles but neither has my friend with the coil so I'm just really lost. is there any kind of condition that might make getting it put in that painful?

I'm glad your friend has a painless experience, but it's extremely common for IUD insertion to be very painful, especially if that's someone's first ever experience with vaginal penetration.

that doesn't mean that you care team didn't do anything wrong; it's definitely possible to make a rough procedure worse if the people involved don't act with care. I can't weigh in on whether or not that's the case here, as I don't have enough information about the situation. I can tell you that there's probably not anything uniquely "wrong" with your body for feeling pain during a procedure that many people find painful, though.

Nuh-uh, let's not go ignoring that there is actually a condition that does just what the asker is asking about: vaginismus. It's more common than people tend to realize, and there are treatments for it.

Like, is it possible that this was just poor practice on behalf of the doctors? Sure. Or first time issues? Sure. But don't fail to answer the question about conditions that can cause this problem. We don't talk enough about vaginal health, and people can go for years or decades in shame because they don't know there are words that exist for things like vaginismus or lichen sclerosus/planus or other things that actually happen down there.

There’s a term I’ve coined with a few of my friends called “The crystal sage effect”. Very simple story behind it, one of my friends was having hardships getting past a boss on dark souls 3 named “the crystal sage” now having played the game with an even wider array of people I have noticed something. Some people struggle really hard with this boss and the other group have no issue with it. Now of course this could be applied to any boss but I’ve yet to see two groups so equally divided between finding the boss easy or hard to defeat. Of course this is a wonderful thing to bring to real life as well, there are struggles that you’ll find near insurmountable in life, hurdles that take genuine time, care and attention to get yourself over. And others won’t find difficulty in doing so, but that’s life, you will struggle with certain things that others find difficult. And you will find things easy others find hard to overcome. I feel like I need to share this because idk if Europeans are familiar with the presence of Aldi in the US, but at least especially in my area they’ve been growing a lot recently. Like Aldi bought out some local failing grocery chains where I live (Louisiana) and have opened Aldis in all these somewhat rural communities and small towns, which for the record I’m fine with

But as a result of this they are advertising a lot more in my area and also in many cases, the people in these areas have never been confronted with Aldi or any European grocery store. So the ads that Aldi is pushing out to its new US customer base feature a cowboy shopping at Aldi who is explaining to new Aldi customers how Aldi works. Like this cowboy is explaining you gotta put a quarter in the shopping cart and why there are very little name brands. A cowboy is how they want to reach their American customer base.
