"Dogwhistles" are called that based on real "dog whistles", many of which are pitched too high to be audible to most humans, but are still perfectly audible to dogs.

Rhetorical dogwhistles are things that most people would not be able to identify as bigoted because they're INTENDED to have plausible deniability.

The wording changes are meant to be subtle enough that people really can mix them up accidentally when they don't have much information!

So when the gender critical movement calls trans women "transwomen", they're hoping for 2 things.

this usage will spread enough among people who don't know any better, to give transphobes the plausible deniability of not LOOKING like a frothing bigot constantly.

the usage grammatically places trans women in a different category than other women; it's changing "trans" from an adjective to part of a noun to make this distinction.

The more we can avoid this usage, the less deniability have transmisogynists have when using it, and the less rhetorical ground we cede to the degendering and misgendering of trans women.

I don't actually think ceding this ground is LESS divisive than pointing it out politely.

As someone who has worked in IT for the past 17 years, I'd also like to say that there is often a higher barrier of entry for open-source software / operating systems when it comes to technical knowledge and ability, and those who can't jump that barrier still deserve to not have AI programs installed on their devices without their knowledge or consent. Someone who struggles with Windows is not going to be able to just hop into Linux, especially when they probably have other things going on in their lives and don't have the time to sit down and learn a brand new operating system. Someone who doesn't even recognize that there are different browsers, much less open-source ones that aren't Chromium forks, isn't going to be able to seek out one they can both a.) safely download, b.) install, and c.) use instead of the shortcut they know as The Internet.

And sure, you can dismiss these people as lazy, as stupid, as being elderly and so who cares. But from my 17 years of experience, I can tell you that technical instinct and ability varies widely across the entire adult spectrum. And I can also tell you that people have different strengths, and that just because someone isn't good with computers doesn't mean they aren't smart as hell.

And I can also say, again, that it really doesn't matter.

Companies like Microsoft and Google sneaking AI software into devices and software without the consent of those using the software or devices is wrong. It's invasive and raises major security concerns. People should not have to learn entirely new operating systems to escape this nonsense. It's an unreasonable expectation, and it fails to hold companies like Microsoft and Google accountable for their malicious behavior.

longtime linux user here! I do think that more wide adoption of open source software is good and the right thing and the path to a healthy ecosystem in the future of computing! One of the very strongest advantages of modern day linux is that you can use it quite simply depending on your use case and workflow! The very strength of the ecosystem is the, admittedly daunting amount of options and user customization. Even back in 2018, I rarely had to use terminal. I almost never opened it during my tenure on Mint. There are tons of operating systems that are not confusing or challenging to any higher level than Windows is, and while it is not always doable at a commercial scale, the EU is already talking about switching to RHEL or similar for all internal government use because of the steady compromising of Microsoft technologies. Linux can only grow and get better and easier and friendlier, and it is a path to direct action to take away the power of these enterprises in the home. Truly, if you have a productivity machine at work, that is a work machine you are not tethered to for your computing needs, but for your employer's. No one is under any duress to switch, and I don't agree with the sentiment of "switch or stop bitching" to paraphrase, but I do think it's worth a shot. Dig out that old laptop that Windows can't run anymore! Learn how much life it has left, it can be part of a recycling initative, even if all it does is connect to an internet browser. Lots of Linux systems can even be set to auto-update now, so that security is easy even for people who don't have the habitual user-update mentality that the ecosystem has leaned on for years. There has been a lot of growth towards an any size fits anyone Linux ecosystem that I think is absolutely fantastic, but there is more growing to do still. Companies are scared of GPL licensing and what it means for consumer freedom. Literally glance at the current total and utter shitstorm of Bambu and OrcaSlicer going on! There is massive political power behind something so collectivist, and we should be fighting for its right to exist and develop and thrive and become better for everyone.
