The Mad King and The Horned God

Each time he closes his eyes, the past returns.

He wakes and walks again, as if the road could carry him beyond his fate.

Before the fall, the mad king made a bargain in the dark.

His chosen returned wearing horns.

One by one, the Horned God called them home.

The last did not answer.

And still, he walks the roads of a fallen empire.

He came from nowhere, walking toward nowhere. The last knight of a fallen empire.

They said the moon was holy.

It wasn’t.

It was just another dead thing hanging over the world, fat and pale, watching men crawl through ash until their knees split open.

The knight knew what waited for him.

Not heaven. Not rest. Not some clean white hall with songs and mercy.

Only him.

The old horned god behind the smoke. The bastard in the sky. The collector of broken souls.

He had been calling the knight for years.

In the wind. In the rust of the armor. In the black sleep between wounds.

Come on. You’re mine anyway.

And maybe he was.

Maybe the moment his heart stopped, the god would take him by the throat and drag him into whatever pit old gods keep for men too stubborn to die properly.

But the knight planted his sword in the stone.

He got one knee under him.

Then the other.

The cloak moved like a torn flag behind him.

The god waited.

The knight stood.

That was the whole war.

Not armies. Not kingdoms. Not songs.

Just one ruined man refusing to lie down, and one ancient god getting angrier because death had called—

and the knight had not answered.

They said the sea had swallowed the last empire. They were wrong.

Something beneath the black water had remembered it.

When the horned sentinel reached the Dead Shore, the waves were not moving toward the land — they were retreating from it. The cliffs groaned. The ash wind fell silent. Then the old shape rose from the storm: not beast, not god, but a wound given wings.

The sentinel did not draw his sword at once.

For a moment, he only stood before it, cloak torn by the salt wind, helmet lowered, as if recognizing an enemy from a dream older than his own name.

And the wyrm opened its mouth, not to roar, but to speak the language of the fallen crown.

They say the Horn was not forged, but found — buried beneath a road of ash where no empire dared lay stones.

The first king placed it upon his helm and heard the dead sea calling from within the metal.

From that day, every oath spoken in his hall turned black at the edges.

His knights rode without banners.

His priests carved no names.

And when the empire finally burned, only one figure remained walking through the soot: horned, silent, cloaked in the grief of a thousand broken gates.

He does not seek the throne.

He follows the sound beneath the earth.
