Finally someone tackles gift giving. It’s my core love language and people don’t get it. At all.
Idk if gift giving is my love language to receive, but it is the one I most easily give. It's just little trinkets or shiny things that hold the message "I saw this and thought of you". The value/price is meaningless, but the time invested into the object has a lot of value.
Your purpose in life is not to love yourself but to love being yourself.
If you goal is to love yourself, then your focus is directed inward toward yourself, and you end up constantly watching yourself from the outside, disconnected, trying to summon the “correct” feelings towards yourself or fashion yourself into something you can approve of.
If your goal is to love being yourself, then your focus is directed outward towards life, on living and making decisions based on what brings you pleasure and fulfillment.
Be the subject, not the object. It doesn’t matter what you think of yourself. You are experiencing life. Life is not experiencing you.
Thank you this is the first post about self love that hasn’t made me want to throw things
I think every single instance of a billionaire saying absolutely anything should be considered “speaking over” literally everybody else because billionaires don’t actually have common life experiences with pretty much anybody except other billionaires.
Not only do I think JK Rowling does not have even the faintest idea of what the standard “lived experience” of a cis woman is like, and thus has no grounding to present her politics as based on some kind of fundamental identity-based condition, I think anybody of her economic class is fundamentally incapable of relating to the lives of any single human on earth who isn’t a billionaire.
You could counter-argue here that she had alleged working class origins but like guess what, the vast majority of working class women not only never leave the working class, undergoing the level of social mobility where gender discrimination, misogynist violence, wage gaps and reduced employment opportunities will literally never again matter to you in any way whatsoever is literally completely impossible to the vast majority of women in the entire world, and is designed to be so. Billionaires have nothing to teach to anybody because billionaire status literally protects you from almost every form of systematized human suffering that exists on Earth.
Alot of people are being wilfully ignorant in the notes. Maybe read up on your heroine so you can stop being loud and dumb.
The polyjuice potion has worn off.
anyway I've decided to write a novel about non-binary wealth-redistributing magicians revolting against the government, I'm 80k words in
If courage isn’t the absence of fear but doing the right thing regardless of it, maybe confidence isn’t the absence of insecurity but knowing you have real worth despite it
this is beautiful
By this same token, maybe goodness isn’t the absence of bad thoughts or impulses, but the conscious choice to behave according to your moral ideals in spite of them.
I love this.

imma say it. “kung fu panda” did more for body positivity and saying that you can be fat and still be healthy and liked than ANYTHING any beauty companies trying to get your money.
kfp also respects women more than any beauty company too.
It also did “letting go of physical attatchments” MUCH better than certain other franchises did, as @tyrantisterror can clarify.
Well I’m not really an expert on that subject but people have yelled at me about it a lot so I’ll try my best.
Ok so, as many tumblr Buddhists and Star Wars prequel apologists have informed me recently, “letting go of attachments” is supposed to mean that you don’t let your love for others or yourself to become obsessive. It’s sort of a combination “if you love it set it free” and accepting that bad things can happen without dwelling on them - an acceptance that you can’t be in control of everything, and that the world doesn’t revolve around you.
In Kung Fu Panda 2, Po, compassionate and heroic though he may be, is weighed down by a great deal of anxiety about his life. He still isn’t sure if he really deserves to be treated as a hero, he discovers he was adopted and is filled with anxiety about his family, and just as he’s finally making friends with his fellow martial artists a threat rises that is trying to kill them all. Po’s friends, family, and very sense of self are threatened in this story.
His antagonist, Lord Shen, is a perfect foil for him. Shen was born into a wealthy family that was renowned for making fireworks, but wants to use that technology to make canons and guns - weapons that, in the world of this story, are unthinkably powerful - which he can then use to conquer all of China. He is warned that if pursues this scheme that a hero of black and white - a panda, he assumes - will rise to kill him. Rather than pursue a less horrible goal, Shen opts to wipe out all the Pandas in China. Horrified at what he has done, Shen’s parents exile him from their family home, and later die of grief.
Yet despite being given palpable evidence that his current course is wrong, Shen remains committed to his mad dream. He refuses to question the morality of his actions, or accept the consequences of it. He paints his parents as traitors who rebuked his love of him, believing that they were the ones who wronged him by exiling him rather than supporting his ambitions. After all, wouldn’t his plan have benefited them as well? Did they not see that he was trying to bring glory to his family, to increase their wealth and status? Did they not see how special and important and perfect he was?
Shen is defined by his attachments. He obsesses over what he feels he is owed, what he deserves, and is incapable of seeing any of his own actions as wrong as a result. He’s incapable of accepting the consequences of his mistakes, even when they cost him things he loves and values. Every setback he faces can’t be accepted as an accident or a result of his own mistakes - it HAS to be a result of other peoples’ faults, of some monstrous conspiracy to keep him from claiming his rightful place.
He assumes others think like this as well. When Po finally confronts Shen, Shen assumes Po would be furious and vengeful at him for, y’know, exterminating Po’s race. The fact that Po is unaware of their personal connection is amusing to him, and being the egotist that he is, Shen can’t help taunting Po about it.
When Po finally presses Shen to tell him what Shen knows about his family, Shen tells a horrible lie. “ Oh, you want to know so badly? You think knowing will heal you, eh? Fill some… crater in your soul? Well, here’s your answer: your parents didn’t love you.” Interestingly, this exact lie is what Shen has told himself to justify his actions - he knows how much it hurts to believe your parents hated you, how much of a betrayal that is, how much you suffer when someone you’re attached to does not share the sentiment, and tries to trick Po into suffering the same way.
Of course, we learn that this is false for both Po and Shen - Shen’s parents did love him, and were killed by the grief of what they allowed their son to become.
By Shen’s logic, Po should be consumed with grief and anger over what Shen has taken of him. Shen expects Po to be just as deranged and vicious as he is - he expects Po to be broken.
Instead, when Po learns the truth, including what Shen has taken from him, Po… let’s go. He let’s go of the sorrow. of the anger, of the grief. He let’s go because he knows he was loved and, more importantly, is loved. He let’s go because he knows that while there are bad times, there are also good times. He let’s go because he knows he can’t control the past. He can’t control what happened to his mother or to his people. He can’t control Shen’s actions. The past is history - it’s the here and now, the present, that matters. Po has people he loves and who loves him, and he has the opportunity to act on their behalf now.
Shen: How did you find peace? I took away your parents. Everything! I I– I scarred you for life!
Po: See that’s the thing, Shen. Scars heal.
Shen: No, they don’t. Wounds heal.
Po: Oh yeah. What do scars do? They fade, I guess?
Shen: I don’t care what scars do.
Po: You should, Shen. You gotta let go of that stuff from the past ‘cause it just doesn’t matter! The only thing that matters is what you choose to be now.
Even after learning everything that Shen has taken from him, Po tries to heal and teach Shen during their final battle. He doesn’t dwell on the grief, he doesn’t succumb to hatred, he simply tries to stop the violence by any means, the ideal way would be to change Shen’s mind rather than to kill him. Shen ultimately forces Po to fight back, and in the process kills himself. Shen was the warrior of black and white who spelled his own doom all along.
But Po isn’t the best example of a character letting go of attachments in the Buddhist sense that this series has to offer. No, the best, most literal example, would be Master Oogway.
In the first Kung Fu Panda movie, Oogway selects what is, essentially, an heir to his role as the ultimate master of Kung Fu. His choice is Po, which surprises everyone since Po is a big, out-of-shape noodle vender, and has no training in kung fu. Yet Oogway is confident that Po is the correct choice, even though everyone else, including his greatest student Master Shifu, insists it was an accident. “There are no accidents,” Oogway says to Shifu, “You must learn to let go of the illusion of control.”
Oogway’s final words to Shifu are to accept that, while we can affect important change in the world, we cannot control everything - that we have to work with what we are given, and accept that things will not go the way we expect or want them to. His plea for Shifu to believe in Po is also a plea to try and work with the situation as it is, instead of stubbornly trying to force it back into the plan that Shifu had concocted in his head.
And when Shifu agrees to do so, Oogway lets go in the exact way Buddha intended - he leaves the material plane and ascends to a higher existence.
In Kung Fu Panda 3, Po briefly ascends to the same spiritual realm that Oogway currently resides in, and Oogway explains how he knew Po would live up to his legacy - how he saw the past, present, and future of Kung Fu in Po, and knew that the world would be safe in the panda’s hands. Oogway’s last attachment to the physical world was his concern for its safety in his absence, and since Po could and would ensure its safety, Oogway was finally ready to let go completely.
Completely letting go of attachments does not work for a traditional hero’s narrative, because the concept isn’t about heroism - it’s not meant to be, either. It’s a philosophy geared towards breaking the cycle of reincarnation, and transcending the problems of a mortal life. Letting go of attachments is what you do to prepare to die, not what you do to prepare for a fight with the Evil Empire.
But letting go of some attachments can be used in a heroic narrative, which is what the Kung Fu Panda series does. It applies Buddhist and Taoist philosophies to a heroic story in a way that makes sense and stays true to both, because it was written by people who are much smarter than George Lucas.
bro tf most people are snickering about sniddies here you got a full on heavily sourced essay on this….hello take my post???
Thank you! I’m just very fond of Kung Fu Panda.
Absolute legend
Ok all of this but also… SNIDDIES
Biggest failing of the internet is that in order to be vibing with my friends I have to actually be talking to them. I socialize like a cat I just show affection by sitting next to you. Ily but sometimes I have Nothing to say. Not a damn thing going on in my head
I don’t want to “have” a “conversation” I want to peel an orange and share it with you
Ugh that post has gotten me thinking about fat acceptance in a way I haven’t in years. I’ve read more studies about weight and health than probably any other topic I’ve ever researched. And every time I see someone wail about health I am just like
Did you know that in post-mortem examinations there is zero correlation between weight and levels of arteriosclerosis and related diseases found?
Did you know that people with an overweight BMI have the longest life expectancy, that those with an “ideal” and an “obese” have about the same life expectancy, and that being “underweight” raises mortality rates more than being “morbidly obese”?
Did you know that losing weight and then gaining it back is worse for your heart than remaining at the weight you started consistently?
Did you know that 95% of people who lose weight do gain it back, and there has never been a single documented weight loss program that has been demonstrated to keep the weight off for five years or more in the majority or even a significant minority of people? Like, telling people to lose weight isn’t much use if we don’t know HOW to make that happen.
Like I have read The Obesity Myth by Paul Campos and Rethinking Thin by Gina Kolata and Big Fat Lies by Glenn A Gaesser (Ph.D!) And Fat!So? and several other books that I don’t own and so don’t remember all of their names I spent like four years reading every single study coming out and looking at the methodology and noting which ones had huge holes or terrible methods and which didn’t (the holes were almost always in the pro-weight-loss studies) and like
Big Fat Lies has 27 pages of bibliography. 27 pages worth of scientific citation. The book content itself is only 197 pages. That’s a page of references for every 7 pages of book. Reading the book is just reference after reference and study after study. Most of these doctors (like Linda Bacon, author of Health at Every Size) started out the same way. They wanted to use the scientific method to find a real weight loss program or health solution that worked and could be proven to work, and so studied everything they could about weight and fitness only to find out that we didn’t need weight loss in the first place. That all the studies calling for it were lacking or nonexistent. That weight and underlying metabolic health have very little relation. That the history of our relationship with health and obesity has little basis in fact and a LOT of basis in capitalism, politics, and fashion. No, really, the association between weight and health was first proposed by insurance companies looking for ways to charge people more by claiming risk. They also charged tall and short people more. And people with different skin colors. When they got in trouble for charging people for things they had no control over and had no bearing on their health, they set out to prove that weight was controllable and that fat was unhealthy to make money.
These are also a lot of the same people who went on to invent the President’s fitness program, so if you went to public school you probably already hate them.
Anyway, if you want a place to start reading about the issue, this article is a pretty good launching pad.
This casual rant is like a primer on weight science. Amazing. I second their book recommendations, and would add to the list Body Respect by Drs Bacon & Aphramor, Body of Truth by journalist Harriet Brown, and What’s Wrong with Fat? by UCLA professor of sociology Abigail Saguy.

to anyone enduring a depressive episode: it’s ok. you’re not being lazy or selfish. your productivity doesn’t define or devalue you. you’re coping. you’re doing the best you can, and that’s ok!
7 depression tips and why they work, from someone who’s been hardcore depressed for two years
hi so im recovering from a really mean depression and there are some things i learned and that i would like to tell you.
1. you need to reappropriate your space and time. depression is lying to you and generally shrinks your living space (aka: you spend your time in bed/behind your computer/in your room…). visit and do something (even if its just scrolling down social media) in each room you have access to. expand your perception and space, you’ll breathe more easily.
2. plan depression outfits. a depression outfit is a comfy one you still can go out in. to me, it’s old ripped jeans and a turtleneck, my old work uniforms, sweaters. dressing up is one of the most important parts of managing depression. first of all, you’ll feel less like pathetic with proper clothes on (nothing worse than staying in your pj all day). secondly, and it’s a crucial point: it allows you to get out to run some errands. imagine you have to go grocery shopping or to the post office. if you’re in your unwashed pajamas you’ve been wearing for three days or more (been there done that) what you have to do is to undress, shower (if you can), and put on real, clean clothes. which is three things. depression messes wih one’s ability to start things, so it’s very likely you’ll drop your errands and just stay at home feeling like shit. but if you’re already wearing clothes, you just have to put on a coat and get out of the house. which is, trust me, 10 times easier than doing the whole dressing up thing.
3. it’s okay if you stay the whole day in bed but force yourself to get up in the morning (anytime before noon) and drink a glass of water/juice. again, depression messes up with your ability to start doing things, but if you concentrate your will to just get up and drink something before going back to bed, i promise you’ll feel less shitty and might actually end up getting up for good since you’ve been through the trouble of getting up. You’ll feel better (and also you need water!)
4. do one (1) physical, material thing that will improve your life conditions per day. aka: washing a single glass, scrubbing the mirror, etc. you’ll feel proud of yourself, and the tidiest your environment, the less shitty your brain will be. plus, again: if you manage to wash a single dish, maybe you’ll find yourself cleaning the whole kitchen without noticing. and thats a good thing. no pressure: just do one single thing. and don’t beat yourself up if you can’t, of course, but try, it’s gonna be better that way.
5. open the window (especially at night, i personally find it very soothing) and just… breathe fresh air, looking at the horizon or closing your eyes, and breathe in and out slowly. it’s great to take fresh air. bonus if you have anxiety/ptsd, honestly. opening the windows is one of the easiest ways i know to stop a panic attack.
6. brush your teeth everyday, even if it’s the only thing you manage to do. i know every depression guide recommends it, but it’s really important. not showering for a few days is okay, you’re not gonna get sick that way. but dental hygiene is capital. not to mention you’ll feel less rotting in the inside if you’re less rotting in the outside. you can use your phone to schedule your teeth brushing of the day! really helps.
7. think about your hobbies and force yourself to do something related to an old hobby of yours. i know it’s no fun. i know you can’t feel anything, so why bother? but really, do bother. do it and eventually as you recover it will be fun again. you haven’t lost your passion, your goals, your motivation. it’s still there, but depression is like a blanket that covers it all. forcing yourself to still act on your hobbies (especially if those are not screen-related: books, gardening, etc.) will help digging through the depression layers to expose your will to live again. trust me on this one. i really thought i was just an apathetic mess, but actually depression was just mean. i believe in you!
and finally: hold tight and it’s gonna be okay! recovery is possible, and it’s gonna arrive sooner than you expect. energy and motivation are good things and they’re still around here waiting for you!
feel free to add your own! you’re all gonna make it i promise.
i love one (1) disaster wizard
It’s a good metaphor tho, because the situation is never going to get better if you don’t eventually pull the door. And afterwards, no matter what the damage was, you’ll have a working cabinet, whatever plates you could salvage, and a place to start putting new plates.
Reblogging for that comment ^
Hats off for negative jokes turned to wholesome posts
So this was me for a long time. Afraid to open the door, certain that all that I was would crash and break. That I could never be repaired.
But I opened the door.
And what fell out and crashed to the ground was not me. They weren’t my dishes.
They were other people’s dishes.
Put inside we without my permission, when I was too young to know that I could not hold them all.
I opened the door, and I’m still here.
It turns out, I’m not that fragile.
Oh damn it got better
THANK YOU TWO FOR MAKING OUR LIVES A LITTLE BETTER

Yeah this is important
What I think a lot of people don’t realize is that conservatives, plenty of them, are FULLY aware of what non conservatives support and are callous and cynical enough to use what they understand their despicable beliefs are as a weapon
Plenty of conservatives KNOW that drug law in this country hurts racial minorities more
And they are NOT ABOVE turning it around and saying “this candidate is a racist because she supports this stuff I’m actively fighting to uphold”
I think people assume that conservatives wouldn’t lie in this specific way because to most decent people it would be essentially admitting the stuff they want is harmful and racist but they ABSOLUTELY do this
They ABSOLUTELY use leftist rhetoric and ideas to smear leftists
This is a totally different perspective that I have never heard. I’m still concerned about the stuff I’ve heard about sex workers/trans rights - and I certainly will have to look into it more..
A Twitter Thread re: Kamala Harris and trans rights.
The misinformation needs to fucking stop.
Thank you! Sifting through stuff is a pain especially because it’s hard to know exactly what you’re looking for.
The thread on Kamala Harris and trans rights:
One of the best explanations I’ve been able to come up with for why autism messes with your sleep schedule is that your brain prefers you to be awake when it is darker and more quieter out. A more nocturnal schedule has a lot of sensory benefits for autistic people:
Fewer people around, less noise
Less bright/glaring light
Generally a calmer environment
Which would work fine if we were living in a world where capitalism hadn’t made alternate sleep schedules so untenable because of “profit.” In a different society this sort of quality could be valued (“no I don’t mind tending the herd at night, you find it hard to stay awake but I find it peaceful,” and so on). But not in this one. And that’s not a failing of biology, or neurology. That’s a failure of society. The fact that so many neurodivergent people struggle with keeping an 8 to 5 schedule is another symptom of intrusive capitalism microcontrolling our lives, not a personal “weakness” or shortcoming.
Give people more control over their lives and schedules.
Here's the thing about shows like South Park and Family Guy that make their money off of being edgy and offensive. They fundamentally reduce their viewers' capacity for empathy. If I found a joke funny, and you found it offensive, you're just too sensitive. This is directly related to the ride of the alt right and the election of trump. In this essay I will
OP WHERE'S THE FUCKING ESSAY
So instead of writing the essay this is exactly what I'm talking about. This shit reduces your capacity for empathy. If you can't understand why people are hurt by a simple joke, nay, think that's the whole point... How the hell are you supposed to feel for someone when they come to you complaining of ACTUAL oppression? It's the foot in the door phenomenon. A little oppression isn't too bad, cuz it's funny, right? It hardens your heart against others
Somebody actually wrote this essay already. It's a Twitter thread about how the alt right recruits teenage boys by getting them to post slightly offensive memes... And then when they get called out and don't understand why the alt right channels their anger at feminists and women and people of color and liberals. According to this thread, boys are being "set up"
Read the whole thread at the link above this is just a snip
"offensive" shows like Family Guy are a precursor to the alt right and you can't change my mind
Y'all this shit so basic even Spongebob one it. It's not about being too sensitive. It's normalizing abuse through comedy that's a foot in the door to greater oppression.
