“Is there any food?” Harry asked, knowing a losing argument when he saw one.

“I think just some bread and cheese,” Ron said pointing towards the kitchen. Harry groaned inwardly. He’d only been gone about ten days, and things in the apartment had deteriorated so quickly. He went in the kitchen, ignored the pile of dishes in the sink, and found the food.

The cheese was so moldy it was growing new cheese, and the bread thunked hollowly on the counter.

“When was the last time you ate?” Harry called as he threw out the bread and cheese. Ron shrugged as he came around the corner.

“Where’s the-” But Harry cut him off with a look.

“That wasn’t food anymore. Hadn’t been for a long time.”

“I’ve been getting a lot of takeaway,” Ron admitted. Harry just sighed, nodding a little.

He protects them and gives them a second chance. All he asks in return is their loyalty.

And, if on occasion he requests that they undertake a certain task, invoking their debt of gratitude - well, that is no more than he is owed.

He once thought to add a certain disowned Black to his collection, but quickly realised his mistake.

Sirius is not an outcast, but a rebel. He knowingly chose his path, and chooses what price he is willing to pay for it. He refuses to be used.

So Albus Dumbledore abandons him.

Nooonono, my friend, that’s what makes this post so beautiful. Because it fits the meta I’ve been trying to get people to accept for years. 

Harry was an outcast due to a childhood filled with abuse and neglect. 

Vernon made him an outcast by dismissing his claims of magic, berating him, locking him in a CLOSET and putting bars on his window, and let’s face it, even though her editor made her cut it out, Jo intended for there to be physical abuse. 

Petunia made him an outcast by enabling and contributing to this abuse, as well as making Harry do dozens of chores while doting on Dudley. 

Dudley made him an outcast by bullying him and threatening any students at school who wanted to be his friends. 

And the rest of the wizarding world made him an outcast when they bullied him for being an outsider.

Harry James Potter became an outcast the moment he was placed with The Dursleys.

And who put him there in the first place?

Harry becomes disillusioned by the most important adults in his life and comes through that to accept them as flawed people he loves anyway. Doing that for snape is extremely in character and tbh probably one of Harry’s greatest strengths

Someone (probably several someones) pointed out once that Harry named his kids after parental and authority figures in his life. He loved Hagrid, and they were friends, but even as an eleven year old Harry never perceived adult-Hagrid as parental or an authority figure - they were just friends.

Hagrid’s also still alive (this breaks downs a little with Lily Luna but I think Ginny had some input there and odds are Luna is that girl’s godmother lol)

I think this goes for Remus too. I think JKR said he didn’t name a kid after remus because of teddy, but I think it’s also bc by DH, they very much treat each other as friends and equals (harry calling remus out and telling him to go back to his kid, remus naming harry Teddy’s godfather)—long gone are the days of the remus harry teacher student relationship

I took my meds too close to bedtime again and I need you all to know the dream I had last night involved Robin Williams becoming the new Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts. Not, a character portrayed by Robin Williams, just Robin Williams as himself running around Hogwarts doing wandless magic and being as loud and big as possible because and I quote before I forget:

“Listen, children, I’m not saying all this bad shit that is happening isn’t scary and you shouldn’t be concerned–because you should!–but I’m telling you this now for free. Life is a boggart, it’s the biggest boggart of them all. You never know what it’s going to look like one moment to the next. And sometimes you just gotta laugh. It’s okay to laugh. It’s part of the grieving process. You need to grieve before you can heal. But it’s okay to laugh while you’re doing it.”

I didn’t wake up right after that, some more stuff happened in a hazy sort of way as the dream began to dissolve into conciousness, but I remember him yelling Expecto Patronum as he punched a Death Eater in the face. Because sometimes, evidently, you have to make your own happy memories.
