@aloneinthewoodsatnight
Well my week has been exciting so far.
I had some other work to do this morning (Figuring out some algae stuff involving 1000 L mesocosm up a mountain) so mystery species has been sitting alone in the lab all morning…..
Made it up to the lab today to find this. It’s probably from the fridge defrosting and not the creepy “algae”.
June 13th Update.
According to a few colleagues it’s either a plant, an algae, or a fungi. So that’s been helpful.
After a day with some sunlight I think I might be seeing some chloroplasts.
It seems to like the nutrient solution I added yesterday though!
I for one welcome our new plant, algae, or fungi overlords.
I was about to say “in a sensible lab people wouldn’t waste time with this, they’d autoclave the bottles and move on” but on reflection I can’t think of a single bio lab I’ve been in that wouldn’t immediately go “ooh, mystery algae, that sounds like a fun challenge; let’s devote multiple hours to identifying it for no reason”.
I need updates tell me about the algae
The mystery algae/plant/fungi/alien is stuck in the university growth chamber. With everything going on I probably won’t get to check in on it until September, possibly not until 2021.
So by that time it will have developed what, writing?
God I hope so, then I can train it to write my thesis!
This entire post is the most on-brand biologist thing I have seen in my entire godforsaken life. The moment this pandemic is over these guys have another crisis ready for us.
Can we get an update cause this is crazy
Update: Due to the global pandemic, the algae has been left alone in a weird hidden growth chamber for a year and will likely stay there for another year. Enjoy that information!
Oh god oh fuck oh Jesus fuck
if you support donald trump unfollow me. full stop. hopefully no trump supporters are dumb enough to think they’re welcome here, but seriously. gtfo my page. block me while you’re at it.

just as you are allowed to change, so are other people. and it’s okay if they no longer fit into your life the same way. we’re always evolving a little.
This hit hard.
I love used bookstores so much
Friendly reminder to not punish yourself for creating.
Can you elaborate on what you mean by this?
I have a tendency to beat myself up whenever something I make doesn’t meet my expectations (which is always). The result is that finishing something = bad feelings: I am effectively punishing myself for having created something. The natural reaction to this punishment is an aversion to creation, meaning that my perfectionism is harming me, not only by causing me to despise what I do make and by impeding the creative process, but by attacking even my desire to create.
Can I watch a great film knowing the actresses in it were terrorized and mistreated the entire time? Can I watch a football game knowing that the players are getting brain injuries right before my eyes? Can I listen to my favorite albums anymore knowing that the singers were all beating their wives in between studio sessions? Can I eat at the new fancy taco place knowing when the building that used to be there got bulldozed eight families got kicked out of their homes so they could be replaced with condos and a chain restaurant? Can I wear the affordable clothes I bought downtown that were probably assembled in a sweatshop with child labor? Can I eat quinoa? Can I eat this burger? Can I drink this bottled water? Can I buy a car and drive to work because I’m sick of taking an hour each way on the subway? Whose bones do I stand on? Whose bones am I standing on right now?
On one hand, it’s a privilege to be able to choose to acknowledge these horrors or not–we’re going to acknowledge that privilege. On the other hand, I once attended a lecture by the explorerer-conservationist Jacques-Yves Cousteau’s daughter and son and they had a lot of opinions about what we could do to help the environment and the ocean and I talked about how in my country, we have to drink bottled water, because it’s a desert and there’s only salt water all around, but we’re contributing to pollution and all of these things…
And she looked at me and told me not to fall into the trap of “activist guilt.” I couldn’t remember the exact words, but, it was the first time I’d heard the term and it took a weight off my shoulders.
We do what we can. It’s so much better than giving up entirely or not doing anything at all because we can’t do it perfectly. It doesn’t benefit anyone in the end if we just sit around feeling guilty about every little thing in life. I’d just joined tumblr back then (haha, so like, eight or nine years ago at this point?), I was being exposed to way more than I’d ever been before (I was previously just into feminism and animal rights/wildlife conservation/environmentalism since I was a kid), and it was weighing on me.
As long as humans are humans and living flawed lives, many consumed by greed, there will not be anything in this world untouched by evil.
I usually avoid stuff that says it was made in China or other cheap looking knockoffs, out of fear of them being made in sweatshops (now, I know even a lot of big brands use those…), it’s exhausting. Then, I read something about how people who actually lived and worked in those would still buy this cheap stuff and how this shocked the foreigner reporting on it, but they just looked confused like, it’s what they can afford and them avoiding consuming it isn’t going to change the whole system from the ground-up.
… it went on about how “money talks” and choosing where to put your money still feeds the whole capitalist system and is nearly a way of comforting yourself, but you not buying doesn’t mean everyone else isn’t. What needs to be tackled is at a much higher level than any of us can reach.
Of course, I’d still, given the choice, give my money to companies I agree with and I’ll boycott what I know to support awful stuff, but I also feel no superiority over this and know now it’s not as black and white or easy as I thought it was.
This is the same reason that moral purity “you can’t enjoy [x] because it’s Problematic ™” is such nonsense, because nothing is pure. There’s something bad about everything if you dig deep enough. As long as we lived in flawed human societies we’ve got to make the best of what they offer us. If you have the choice and means, please, do support those who do good, but also, don’t beat yourself up over not living up to an unattainable ideal.
No one can. You’ll just make yourself so miserable, you either burn up and stop fighting entirely or you’ll make yourself a non-productive, depressed heap just out of a bleeding heart left unchecked. You can’t make a change to this world if you refuse to engage in it.
Have a related article with self-care tips for activists.
Purity is one of the worst, most harmful myths humans ever invented.
Rebloging for this amazing reply telling us how to actually handle this, because yeah, sometimes I’ll simply shut down trying to find something that doesn’t cause harm to anyone
I’d take health care and no children in cages if it meant, like, fewer kinds of apple juice to choose from, idk.
Because this version of the post doesn’t have it: HE IS IN A RESTAURANT SUPPLY STORE. It’s not even SUPPOSED to have a fucktillion name brands!
“Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Ilhan Omar introduced a new bill Tuesday that would aim to provide free meals each weekday to all school children in the U.S. Students would be able to receive free breakfast, lunch, dinner and a snack at school, regardless of their socioeconomic status. The bill would also support families in the summer by providing an additional $60 per month on EBT cards.”

this law needs to be passed it’ll literally save millions of struggling families
Europeans can snort so many mummies it wipes out almost the entire population of mummified individuals but human sacrifice is bad. Hm.
Is…is human sacrifice not bad to you guys? Like imagine if you didn’t know anything about them when you met them for the first time and they showed you all their amazingly advanced astronomy, irrigation systems, and stuff. Then the next thing they show you is a sacrifice to the gods which involves killing someone while they are fully conscious and healthy. You wouldn’t think that’s fucked up? You’d look past that because they know how the stars work? Hm.
Literally no one is arguing that human sacrifice is not bad, its that Europeans (White Europeans) only ever focus on the unethical parts Mesoamerica. Why is it that we can learn about the fantastic things white Europeans did in history while their conquests and sacrifices get swept aside? Or studied with facination? Why is it that all I, a mexican, always hear white people talk about the unethical parts of mesoamerican culture and never how they were one of the most technological advanced civilizations? Its the racism.
Personally I think Christians killing thousands of Jews and Muslims in the name of their religion is pretty bad but sure sure we can just ignore that to talk about human sacrifice in Mesoamerica
When I visited the United States Holocaust Museum for the first time, I was struck deeply by one wall with absolutely nothing on it, except for this quote:
“Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?”
Hitler often used it to cite how history would forget about his “final solution”, as they didn’t remember the Armenian genocide, did they?
My family is in America for the sole reason that the first Armenian genocide drove them out. My grandmother knows nothing of what happened to her cousins and aunts and uncles, and still, to this day, the Armenian genocide is not recognized by Turkey.
It’s happening again. The Azerbaijan and Armenian conflict over Artsakh, an area that Azerbaijan claims is theirs, but is inhabited heavily by Armenians, has been restarted, and the people living there are in serious danger, as Turkey is now lending their military aid to Azerbaijan as well, while the rest of the world is turned the other way.
I know we’re all so fatigued from the shitshow that has been 2020, and how difficult it can be to comprehend yet another tragedy, but if you have a moment, please just educate yourself on what’s happening in Armenia and Artsakh, educate a friend, and take a look at the some of the resources I’ll link below, I would be so grateful. Don’t let history annihilate my people again.

here’s something everyone needs to hear: life’s way too short to waste it on things and people who suck your energy, to hold grudges, to worry about uncontrollable things, to be upset over the past or anxious about the future, to be mad at each other, to be a prisoner of overthinking, to chase someone, to do something you don’t love. therefor flow with it freely, wildly, lovingly, recklessly, and happily.
