And tumblr is a cesspool of this obessive, nasty behaviour. It’s an echo-chamber of bullshit and over what? Fictional characters. I’ve seen it with Luca, I’ve seen it with Destiel and Sterek, Bucky and Sam and every two male leads in the pst ten years, honestly. EVERYTHING has to be gay and God forbid it doesn’t measure up to their expectations because then people get threatened.  And people see this. People see the tweets. Read the buzzfeed articles. There is a reason Tumblr is basically dead compared to other social media, because no one wants to be part of this toxic envirnment anymore. Sadly, that toxic environment gets out and sadly, it reflects poorly on all of us and leads to the numbers linked above. So maybe some people on this hellsite I should have left a decade ago should really get their ‘woke’ heads out of their asses and look at the damage they are doing. Because they are. it’s not fetishizing queer relationships if one of the characters is canonically pansexual and gender fluid. Loki literally is a a shape shifter and in Norse folklore, has birthed 3 children. and they seem to have chemistry.

The problem here isn’t the sexuality of the characters or their ability to shift genders. The problem is that neither Loki - nor Bucky x Steve as you mentioned in the tags - are queerbaiting and the fact that you think it is goes to show how much that word has been watered down over the years.

Never once did anyone allude to the possibility of Bucky and Steve. The characters never dated in the comics and it was Peggy Steve was into from start to finish. Personally I’d have preferred otherwise but then again I’d also liked to have seen Bucky and Black Widow like in the comics and found myself robbed of either Bucky ship. Either way, that couple was never alluded to or hinted at. In fact it was made abundantly clear, that it wouldn’t happen. That tumblr likes to put their gay spin on everything is their problem.

Same with Loki. The show is literally described by multiple cast members as well as writers as a BUDDY-cop show. Buddy meaning friends. And yes they gave chemistry; as FRIENDS. If you guys wanna interpret that as gay go for it, but don’t blame Disney for not pandering to YOUR interpretation of something that the original writers etc. never envisioned. It’s not queerbaiting. In fact the mere description already gives that away.

Let alone the fact that I don’t see any romantic or flirty chemistry between them. That’s literally what I’m like with friends. Tumblr just liked to forget that friendships exist in the real world.

seeing people call luca and alberto’s relationship queerbaiting is kind of weird to me...like if you read interviews about the movie from before it came out there was never any implications that their relationship would be anything more than platonic. I think there was one particular interview where they said luca and alberto’s friendship was supposed to replicate the feeling of being a kid and meeting someone on a vacation, and becoming best friends. like the fact that people read their relationship as queer is fine! but you also gotta know what buzzwords mean before you start throwing them around like that.

I literally had a fight with someone about this - although it was about Loki and not Luca - and got blocked when they ran out of arguments. You can’t have this opinion on tumblr without getting crucified.

Everything is queerbaiting. Everything is (internalized) homophobia. Everything is racism or sexism or whatever icsm we are mad about that day. Always made. Never making any (positive) changes.

Only hope is that kids eventually grow out of this tumble phase of social justice or, if the Gods allow it, the site gets shut down for good. Since the NSFW ban this site has become useless anyway, unless you’re a kpop fan or your Instagram followers are tired of listening to you rave about politics you don’t even know enough about to have an educated opinion.

Don’t get me wrong, if you see Luca as being a gay coded movie and you see the characters as gay that’s totally fine, I’m not saying don’t do that, but what I’m also saying is that if you don’t see them as gay that’s cool too! Close platonic friendships are also very important and Luca did a great job of showing friends that are very close and obviously love each other very much without making romance any part of it.
