Back on Tumblr after 10yrs - language is 18+ Ship and Let Ship ⚓️ Currently on an Angbang and Silmarillion kick I’m essentially a hobbit at heart and this page will likely reflect that ❤️
To me it was on a par with Fili’s “if there’s a key, there must be a door!” revelation in the first Hobbit film.
Like, you don’t say?!
Slow Claps(TM) for the blond fellas of Middle Earth, who are always just a couple of steps behind the rest but always bring the right attitude.
The sunshine characters that bring a little bit of unexpected levity to a horribly insurmountable situation that would send most others spiralling into the darkest pits of despair… you stunning hunks of rocks!
“In all the deeds of Melkor the Morgoth upon Arda, in his vast works and in the deceits of his cunning, Sauron had a part, and was only less evil than his master in that for long he served another and not himself. But in after years he rose like a shadow of Morgoth and a ghost of his malice, and walked behind him on the same ruinous path down into the Void.”
inspired: merfolk actually have very different concepts of gender to humans because they’re an entirely different species with their own unique culture
It’s a biological fact that fish do indeed change their sex to keep the male/female ratio balanced in their school population. So this fluidity actually makes more sense from a scientific standpoint than the silly idea that merfolk are born with a strictly assigned sex like humans.
Human: (invites merfolk friend to a boat party with their friends)
Merfolk: oh man, there are a lot of women here. Haha don’t worry guys, I got this :) *changes into a man to keep a balance because that’s culturally polite for merfolk*
I’m absolutely obsessed with the reddit side of the Tolkien fandom, in particular, this discussion regarding how Sauron fits the ring on his finger, as well as penal compensation a la Lord Farqaud style
so apparently some people feel like it’s annoying when someone engages with a lot of stuff from the same person, like going through their ship tag and liking all the content there.
hearing about this, i was immediately paranoid about reblogging literally anything from anyone i don’t talk to on a regular basis.
so to save others from the same paranoia, i’m gonna say that if you like every single post on my goddamn blog it is okay. i might be kind of concerned about your level of time management, going through 23,000 posts, but it wouldn’t bother me.
i think we should bring this back (with some amendments ofc) if we ever needed an "internet etiquette" for the younger generations, now is the moment to remind them. purity culture kills fandom
as well as the three laws of fandom:
Don't Like, Don't Read (DL;DR), Your Kink is not My Kink And That's OK (YKINMKATO) and Ship and Let Ship
NO ONE LIVING hasn't been squicked out by something. There's over 7 billion of us, my delights and disgusts aren't universal. So I move on. Don't like the ship? Move on. Don't like____? Move on.
I am not an exception. Neither are you. I don't like it I move on and shut my gob about it because everyone everywhere is squicked out by something and they need to put the thing down and just…motor.
teenage girls in numenor were too busy writing feanor x thingol feanor lives au fanfiction to give a fuck about sauron’s gay little devil worshipping pyramid scheme
the fact that at the council of elrond glorfindel is like “just throw the ring into the ocean” is so funny to me after reading the silmarillion just because it feels like the subtext is him being like “yeah let’s try maglor’s patented and tested method: Just Yeet The Accursed Fucking Thing Into The Water”
#in fairness they do do literally the other fëanorion approved method of magical item disposal #glorfindel: we could do like maglor and throw it in the ocean? #elrond: no we’re doing like maedhros and jumping into a volcano via @lesbianlanval
*at the council of Elrond*
Elrond: Alright, everyone listen up. We elves have 4 methods of dealing with Accursed Fucking Objects™, as demonstrated by my four parents.
Number 1, the Elwing Method or Mom Method. This is to hide the accursed fucking thing away and keep it safe and close. This is highly not reccommended if the object can take over its user like the ring can, and Sauron will be searching for it, so this method is out of the question.
Number 2, the Earendil Method or the Dad #1 Method. This is, send the accursed fucking thing across the sea or to some higher power. According to Mithrandir, the Valar will not take it and Tom Bombadil wants nothing to do with it, so this is also out of the question.
Number 3 is the Maglor Method, or Dad #2 Method. This is to yeet the accursed fucking thing into the ocean. In this case, it is not a good idea as Ulmo will be very upset and we will still have to contend with Sauron.
The last method is the Maedhros Method or the Dad #3 Method. This method is to yeet yourself into a volcano while holding the accursed fucking thing, and also the method we will be using. You will not have to yeet yourself into the volcano, only the ring, don’t worry, Frodo.
Broke: Starting with Frodo's well substantiated and granular account, written by a major figure in events with the help of first hand accounts from many other major, important persons for crucial events he was not present for.
Woke: Starting with Biblo's Big Book of Baldfaced Lies. And if he wasn't physically in the room and paying attention when something important happened, you won't hear a gaddam thing about it.
Bespoke: Starting with the Noldor Propaganda Piece, so that you can be sufficiently biased by their more-politically-convenient version of the backstory.
I need to vent pals cos I’m tired (full rant under the cut).
I’m in the uncomfortable position of loving The Silmarillion and the Angbang ship but also liking Rings of Power. Seeing both sides scrapping and hating on each other… let me tell you… being in the middle hecking sucks.
Me trying to enjoy both fandoms:
Controversial, apparently, but you can like/love The Silmarillion, The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, History of Middle Earth etc etc and also like/love Rings of Power.
You can also like/love the aforementioned and dislike/hate Rings of Power.
Neither is a correct or incorrect stance. You can love and hate what media you want.
Rings of Power is flawed as the source material the showrunners have to work with is tiny. Also… The Rings of Power is not canon. It’s an interpretation (read expensive fanfiction). Like Peter Jackson’s LOTR films are an interpretation (I grew up thinking Sauron was literally a motherheckin disembodied eye until I read the books at 14 for crying out loud).
I like Rings of Power for what it is. I know it’s not perfect but there is plenty good about it (Adar my beloved 😩) and it allows me to engage in Tolkien’s world again, including critiquing where the show falls down. I also fully understand why people do not like it and even detest its existence. The shipping wars that have come from the RoP fandom being, 100% understandably, a big factor in that hate (a certain ship more than others let’s be so fr).
I love The Silmarillion. More than LOTR in fact. I love The Hobbit book, which is why I personally struggled with The Hobbit films so much and the ships that blossomed from said films. I just block and move on.
The Silmarillion was here before Rings of Power. The Silm fandom was here before the RoP fandom. The Silm ships were here before RoP ships. That does not invalidate shipping on either side, but I’m seeing disrespect in tags and fandom spaces towards Silm ships, notably Angbang.
So imma rant for a sec plz.
DO NOT COMMENT, ESPECIALLY WITH AUTHORITY, ON WHAT YOU DO NOT KNOW/HAVE NOT READ OR SEEN.
THE SILMARILLION LORE IS CANON (yes it is, Christopher Tolkien may have put it together but it was his father’s notes and writings he compiled so it’s more canon than any film media or fanfiction). RINGS OF POWER IS NOT CANON. THAT DOES NOT MEAN ROP FANDOM CANNOT ENJOY SHIPS WITHIN THEIR OWN FANDOM BUT ROP SAURON IS NOT SILM OR EVEN LOTR SAURON AND THAT’S OKAY.
YOUR SHIP DOES NOT NEED TO BE CANON FOR YOU TO ENJOY IT! I ship Adar and Celebrimbor for heck’s sake, Adar is an OC and they never even met in RoP 😂
YOUR SHIP CAN EXIST ALONGSIDE OTHER SHIPS! 😱
STOP MISTAGGING ON TUMBLR, THE LACK OF ETIQUETTE IS DISGUSTING! This includes hating on a ship and tagging it to purposefully annoy that ship fandom or trying to claim tags that have already been used for years and push the original users out.
YOU CAN HAVE HEADCANONS THAT DISAGREE WITH OTHER PEOPLE’S HEADCANONS AND MOVE ON WITH YOUR LIFE! I don’t personally like angbabies or mpreg, but they are part of the angbang experience. I just block or scroll on.
IF YOU ARE BEING ENTITLED OR RUDE OR SUPERIOR - STOP IT! IT’S ALL FICTION AT THE END OF THE DAY.
YOU CAN ENJOY YOUR SHIP WITHOUT HAVING TO “PROVE” IT IS VALID BY “PROVING” ANOTHER SHIP IS INVALID.
Because…
YOU AND YOUR SHIP ARE NOT BETTER OR MORE VALID THAN ANYONE ELSE’S!
FINALLY:
IF YOU SEND ANONYMOUS HATE YOU ARE COWARDLY TRASH PLAIN AND SIMPLE, GET IN THE MOTHERHECKIN BIN.
I’ll shut up and look at cool art of Melkor and GIFs of Adar now, okay bye.
Part of the reason I've kept my distance from the wider RoP fandom for so long, honestly. Some of my reasons are explained here, but this is not all of them or we would be here for WEEKS lmao-between the hate, the anons, the fics comments, the usual brainworms leaving etc etc.
The constant drama, anonymous hate, ship wars, witch hunts, hostility in comments, and general atmosphere of making fandom felt/ still feels like a minefield instead of a hobby and it just is too much.
I'm genuinely sorry to everyone who's still dealing with it, to this day.
You shouldn't have to defend your right to enjoy fictional characters. You shouldn't have to worry about getting dogpiled for a ship, a headcanon, an interpretation, or simply existing in a fandom space.
It's genuinely depressing seeing people treat harassment, hate, and constant fandom warfare as something normal. We shouldn't have reached a point where people expect this kind of behaviour every time they engage with a fandom.
Fandom is supposed to be FUN.
Sending love and support to the people who are still out there making art, writing fic, sharing metas, posting GIFs, and generally trying to enjoy themselves despite all the nonsense still going on❤️
Okay but you forgot the best part! During the scene where Aragorn, Gandalf and the other Main CharaktersTM ride ahead to go shout at the gate (and talk to the mouth of sauron in the extended edition) they were very firmly told only to ride up ahead “this far” because that area was cleared and beyond that it wasn’t.
But. Viggo Mortensen is absolutely mad and lead them just…. a bit farther than that. Everyone else was very scared they might blow up any second. Viggo said it “added a little extra tension”.
Viggo was just Like That™ for the whole trilogy, taking method acting to extreme levels:
he would spend multiple days walking overland to locations in full pack, sword, & armour when everyone else was travelling in trucks
refused to use any prop swords that weren’t actual steel
basically lived in the forest in-costume, sleeping rough under the sky, even fishing & foraging for his food when possible
often spent hours in the barn just bonding with the horses. He adopted the horse he rode, Uranus, after filming ended
repaired all his own gear by hand, which was often since he never took it off
had a tooth knocked out during filming but had the crew simply glue it back in place so they could keep filming
the instructor who taught everyone swordplay said Viggo was the best swordsman he had ever trained
carried his sword literally everywhere & practiced non-stop, resulting in the cops being called when locals reported “a wild man swinging a sword around his head" outside a gym in Wellington
an orc actor fucked up & accidentally threw a dagger directly into Viggo’s face, but Viggo just deflected it with his sword. They kept that shot
infamously broke 3 toes kicking that helmet but stayed in-character & sold his very real scream as part of the scene. They also kept that shot
Viggo insists on doing his own stunts; in The Two Towers where Aragorn is unconscious & floating down the river, the strong current pulled him underwater for so long that a rescue team had to go in to save him. Viggo survived by grabbing a boulder on the riverbed and pulling himself to the surface
It’s probably more accurate to say that Aragorn played Viggo Mortensen in the off season, so I’m 100% unsurprised to hear he put a whole crowd of fellow actors in genuine mortal peril for a 12% increase in authenticity
what are people's favorite niche ice cream flavors. mine are superman and blue moon (specifically from the midwest like michigan/indiana/wisconsin), van leeuwen's royal wedding cake, and jeni's wildberry lavender
