microsoft games are a bds boycott target, and because both bethesda + obsidian are owned by microsoft, this includes the games published by them.

microsoft is gonna further profit from a new virtual playground of ~post-apocalyptic bombed out towns in the desert~ while contributing to creating bombed out apocalyptic conditions in gazan towns, by collaborating with israel on so many fronts that bds calls microsoft the most complicit company in palestinian genocide.

and nostalgia-baited fans will still buy it bc playing pretend in a virtual world thats a knockoff of what real life people are currently facing – a virtual world funded by that very suffering of those real life people – is more important to them than simply playing a different game

Rewatching RoP with my family and forgot how intensely sick the dynamic between Celebrimbor and Annatar makes me. It's genius. It's brilliant. Honestly most of the show sucks but the scenes between those two in particular are so good. My brother made multiple comments about how stupid Celebrimbor was for falling for Sauron's obvious manipulation multiple times, but honestly it's SO realistic. When you are in an abusive relationship, you can innately know that something is wrong and yet stay because they are the only ones who truly know/understand/care about you.

What really hit me though was the scene where Celebrimbor notices the mouse returning and marks his candle to keep track of time. That is so. fucking. realistic. For me, it got to the point where I had to record conversations and write down the exact words said to me because otherwise I would be gaslit into thinking I somehow misremembered or made them up. The desperation for physical proof that something is wrong when everything looks to be right was genuinely such a great inclusion that many stories centering victims of abuse miss. In most cases, somebody is there to save the abused person. An outside perspective recognizing the manipulation of the abuser and giving the abused the strength to leave or straight up pulling them out of the situation themselves seems to be the norm in media. But in reality? The abused is much more likely to be alone. The people around them only see the perfectly-crafted image of the abuser and one-by-one leave the abused even more isolated. The only one who saves Celembrimbor is Celebrimbor himself.

So yeah, Sauron's manipulation was "obvious" and "heavy-handed", but in real life it usually is. Most abusers don't have to be geniuses. Their abuse is out in the open and easy to identify. The problem is that they cultivate a personality that makes it easy to wave off the red flags for both the abused and bystanders alike.

The “nobody” scene in the odyssey is absolutely not just a clever pun—it’s a character defining moment for Odysseus because he refuses to be nobody. He devised an incredible plan that worked and he could have saved his men and returned home much sooner but he just had to yell to the cyclops that he isn’t nobody—he’s Odysseus, king of Ithaca so now Poseidon knows who to curse which severely fucks up the rest of the journey.

The “nobody” scene highlights both Odysseus’s cleverness but also his arrogance and those two traits define Odysseus throughout the entire story. It’s a foundational aspect of Odysseus’s character and cutting the scene displays a shocking level of ignorance and disregard for the themes in the source material.

Ok this is it, I have to get something of my chest. Because of this goddamned Odyssey film I keep reading everywhere that Emily Wilson is the first woman to translate the Odyssey and because of this she has a unique take on the text.... NO NO NO THIS IS NOT TRUE she's the first ENGLISH woman to translate the Odyssey but women have been translating and publishing their translation since the 1700s !!!! In French and Italian and I'm sure other languages too!!

I'm so mad because students in Italy have been studying on Rosa Calzecchi Onesti's translation for decades!! Her translation is so well regarded it keeps being used in academia to this day and it's from the 60s!!! There have been dozens of other translations since then but we keep using that one !!!

(and also many other women published their translations both before and after her)
