An understory scene

anyways (I say this as someone who is deeply critical of the united states government, military, unchecked capitalism, police, etc) I am SICK of people treating america as if it has no cultural value or positives so….. I love u 85 million acres (bigger than italy) of national parks. I love u harlem renaissance. I love u groundhogs day. I love u sweet tea and fried chicken and jambalaya. I love u apple cider donuts and maizes on crisp autumn days. I love u 95k miles of coastlines and new england fisherman and hand knitted sweaters. I love u halloween where millions of people dress up and give candy to strangers and carve jack o’lanterns. I love u small talk and small towns and potlucks and bringing over casseroles to your struggling neighbors. I love u cowboys and ranch hands and arizonian cactus. I love u appalachian trail and dirtbikes and divebars. I love u sparklers and fireflies. I love u mark twain and toni morrison and emily dickinson and henry david thoreau. I love u rock n roll i love u bluegrass and hippies i love u jimi hendrix and nirvana and CCR and janis joplin. I love u victorian houses and jonny appleseed and john henry and mothman and bigfoot. I love u foggy days in the pacific northwest and neon signs and roadside attractions. I love u baseball and 1950s diners and soft serve. I love u native american art and pop art and poptarts. I love u blue jeans and barbecues and jazz musicians

I love you American people with a need to feed everyone with enough for leftovers so strong even our restaurants follow that rule. I love you American language that happily picks up pieces of everyone else’s and uses it with such glee and delight it almost makes up for pronouncing it wrong. I love you American party drive that will have us celebrating holidays we don’t even know the point behind just so we can party with you. I love you American Road Trips and the way we have built places to suit them with oversized gas stations that serve everything in the world at dusty back room prices. I love you trucks on the side of the road selling all manner of food (and moonshine) and how everyone just pulls over and trusts the stranger with the smoker hooked to his Bronco enough to pay him to eat his food. I love you ice in our drinks, free refills and AC everywhere. I love you American arrivals who turn their country’s food into OUR food. I love you awful hole in the wall ‘tourist’ attractions with your giant plaster dinosaurs or sharks or alligators and your seashells with googly eyes glued on them souvenirs and your entrance door with giant plaster animal jaws framing it. I love you regional accents. I love you America and your huge smiles for strangers, your full laughs, your casual compliments, your absolute need to talk to other people’s pets -

One thing im uncomfortably woke about is bugs. And im actively trying to get more uncomfortably woke. By this i mean i DO believe the normalised fear of bugs stems from both government and business propaganda. The start of household pesticide sales coinciding with the boom in insect related horror movies. The promotion of anti intellectualism and anti enviromentalism. If you're scared of bugs, you wont care about saving them. If you dont care about saving them, you wont care about saving our home, since without bugs it cannot be saved. If you dont care about saving our home, the rich can do whatever they want with the chunks of it they continue to destroy.

I WILL calmly and kindly try to help anyone who is afraid of bugs. I will show them my finds, i will explain their importance, i will tell them just how sweet and gentle and friendly they are. And I WILL shoot down any immature loser who believes senseless killing is the only possible response to not liking something.

Get woke. Love bugs.

EDIT: this breached containment. My usual like count is like 5 😭 i want to clarify i mean people who conflate fear with hate are the ones who wont care about saving our planet, like people who threaten to kill peoples pet bugs or actively kill bugs outside for no apparent reason. Not people who run away from a bee.
