i too wish i was not the cassandra of my age
I feel like the line between “fluffy uwu self care” and “get your shit together self care” is thinner than people seem to think. Like, sitting in a quiet space with a book and maybe some twinkly fairy lights gives me the spoons to go call my damn doctor like I’ve been meaning to. Bath bombs or shower steamers make me feel content and/or sparkly, which gives me confidence to go out in public. (Plus, I bathed.) I dye my hair funky colors so if I feel like people are staring at me I can say it’s at that instead of whatever my anxiety wants it to be.
The two are not mutually exclusive, is what I’m getting at, and I never see that mentioned, just either “self care is being nice to yourself” or “self care is kicking yourself in the ass to function for a few hours”. Kick yourself in the ass with niceness.

Before I argued with a shit ton of landlords and wannabe landlords: I think we should strengthen tenant’s rights and enforce our existing tenant protection laws better, and increase our housing benefits.
After spending too much time arguing with landlords and wannabe landlords: Fuck it. It should be illegal to own homes you don’t live in. If you won’t sell to the people renting from you, people should forcibly take your property. All landlords are parasites.

Houses in my city go for, like, $500k. I can't. Housing prices in the US have skyrocketed while wages have stagnated. That is in fact the problem--most people cannot afford to buy a house, and many people pay more than half their income in rent. Ever saved up for a down payment on a house while doing that?

Moving is expensive and stressful. There's no guarantee of finding another place within reasonable distance of where we work, where we buy groceries, etc.

If landlords/property companies all were forced to sell every place they owned except housing they specifically lived in, the market would have such a glut of housing that prices would nosedive in nearly every city in the US, possibly to the point where normal, average working people could buy one. Houses and apartments do not blink out of existence because a landlord stops renting them out. Why do I see this dumbass line of logic so fucking often.
People literally cannot wrap their minds around the fact that landlords (and I include property companies--the kind that own multiple apartment complexes--as landlords) don't create or do anything of value. "But when I need the water heater fixed, the landlord fixes it." Except for some mom'n'pop landlord operations that insist on DIY'ing everything, your landlord is not the one who is fixing it. The person who physically comes to your unit and fixes it is the person who fixes it, and your landlord is just an expensive gatekeeper who decides for you whether you actually need your water heater fixed. If you owned the place you could have insurance against that kind of thing, you could put money in a co-op that pays for that kind of thing (like condo associations do), or you could just pay out of pocket for it if you have the money. If you did take on the risk of repairing it yourself, the only person who would suffer is you. But you wouldn't be at the mercy of some dipshit who tries desperately not to get your water heater fixed (even though that's illegal), or who hires the cheapest person they could find (who might suck ass and make it worse), or insists on doing it themselves (whether they know what they're doing or not).
HUMANS REQUIRE SHELTER TO SURVIVE. The modern standard for housing includes things like locking doors, ceilings and windows that don't leak, walls that aren't covered in mold, and working electricity, plumbing, and hot water at a bare minimum. On top of that, we need shelter that's near enough to our place of employment and places to buy food, etc.
Landlords do not provide housing. They hold it ransom for as much money as they think they can get, because they know we need housing to survive. They buy up as much housing as they can (reducing the supply of available houses for sale) and then rent them out at a profit (which means more than they're paying on the mortgage, if they have one). They are hoarding housing, creating a false scarcity, and then profiting off of it.
Landlords are parasites.
When spn is getting a sequel, RTD is returning to doctor who and teen wolf is being revived and you're just sitting there like:

Marinette mostly has to deal with the drama of it only from her classmates while Adrien is cringing in silence but no one really looks his way cuz why?? would they?? So he kinda gets off mostly scot free and maybe Marinette gets the occasional random Parisian or journalist trying to ask her about Cat - and her friends freaking out for a few days that their clumsy tiny baker friend somehow landed one of the superheroes - but for the most part, the rest of Paris and Alya would mostly be maybe a little disappointed their ladynoir/adrienette ship didn't sail - "I guess Cat moved on from Ladybug, huh? Who is this chick?" and any media kinda forgets about it within the next week or so -
But if LADYBUG.... Was caught smooching up a storm with MODEL/ACTOR ADRIEN AGRESTE... NEITHER OF THEM can get away from it in EITHER IDENTITY and HERE'S WHY:
Once the Ladrien photos of them undoubtedly making out hit the interwebs, the Ladyblog fucking EXPLODES - Ladynoir shippers and Adrien fangirls alike are crying, school turns into a fucking war zone Adrien has to navigate cuz Lila is about to commit a fuckin double murder, Chloe's going for the world record of how many Ladybug magazines one can tear apart with their teeth -
Alya is of course trying to be reasonable cuz it's not like she can control Ladybug or that she'd even know, but she admittedly feels lesser toward the heroine just cuz the whole thing is hurting her best friend :( and so to Marinette's horror she can't even hide from it all as herself cuz ALL THE GIRLS in class keep drawing attention to their "poor heartbroken friend :(" who hasn't been able to look at anyone in the eye or stop constantly internally screaming cuz Adrien is also blushing SO MUCH cuz the class is just LOSING it that Adrien MADE OUT WITH FUCKIN LADYBUG and looks like he wants to vanish into his chair becauze of HER and oh no what is she going to say to Cat next time she sees him oh gawd what if this really upsets him-
And also Adrien can't get away from the attention of it by turning into Cat cuz now all of fuckin Paris is treating him with mixed reactions of pity/sympathy that his obvious crush went for someone else in the most publicized train wreck possible but if everyone would just sTOP FUCKIN LOOKING AT HIM maybe he'd actually get to enjoy how much on cloud 9 he really is cuz his stomach has NOT stopped flipping since her lips were on his oh curse Plagg's bad luck, if only no one SAW he'd have a CHANCE-

But Cat just wants to scream, cuz how the FUCK does he tell her just how much he supports her swooping Adrien up and kissing him till his lips are swollen again without sounding weird or like he's lost his damn mind while the "as ladybug" part flies right over his dumb little head-
And now not just all this shit, the AKUMAS get much more aggressive toward Ladybug while Ladynoir can hardly even focus cuz GABRIEL is also flipping the FUCK out cuz why and how is she courting his son, and so goes into a paranoid dramatic spiral in his attic cuz what if this was HIS fault for showing Ladybug his son's photos that one time she was at his house?? For putting him in situations where she'd have to rescue him?? Was underestimating his son's beauty his hubris?? His downfall?? Or what if she's actually playing a game to get back at Hawkmoth cuz she secretly knows that's his son which is BATSHIT but he can't help but think it when yet ANOTHER GODDAMN REQUEST in his email for an interview with "the boy who stole Ladybug's heart" attached with THAT SAME DAMN PHOTO of his son pinned up against the wall by his arch nemesis is her revenge and his fuckin punishment

Korra and Asami only held hands because Nickelodeon wouldn’t let them do more. Nick infamously cancelled Korra and put out the rest of season 4 as a webseries only.
Marceline and Princess Bubblegum only kiss in the very final episode because Cartoon Network wouldn’t let them do more. There are a ton of interviews with Pendelton and with the voice actresses where they talk about the CN censorship.
Steven Universe got as far as it did because Rebecca Sugar fought tooth and nail, and risked the show getting cancelled (which it did in many countries, if not heavily censored), because Cartoon Network wouldn’t let her. Ruby was often dubbed over with a male voice, and Pearl/Rose interactions were completely cut.
She-Ra managed to do it largely because it was specifically on Netflix only, and even then, Noelle has said they had to build 4 seasons of storyline very subtly around it so they had enough ammo to convince the execs that Catradora was the only logical conclusion to this show they had already aired. She didn’t just go in on Day 1 and make it gay; she had to plan many years in advance for how to set up her argument. Her argument, y’all.
And now we have The Owl House. Which is an absolutely wonderful show. And it’s so amazing that we actually get to see queer characters get the kind of representation that so many straight characters get. And it’s amazing we get to see the romance build up, instead of just a quick peck in the series finale!
Let’s not forget that in the US, it was illegal for gay people to get married until 2015. Korra aired in 2012. In Texas, it was a punishable felony to even be gay until the mid-90s. No, literally. Just being gay was an arrestable offense here in Texas until 1993. We have come a really long way in 20 years!
But don’t fucking dare disrespect any of these other shows by saying they didn’t try, or that their representation didn’t matter. The Owl House is standing on the shoulders of giants. Lumity is only where it is because Korrasami and Bubbline helped get them there.
