people getting mad at ao3 for rightfully being firmly against censorship and allowing dark fics that depict taboo subjects in explicit details to be on their platform is so funny to me because ao3 was created specifically to be a fuck you to capitalism and censorship. the point of ao3 is that it’s a place to host and archive any fanwork, which includes fanwork about taboo topics that are not allowed on other platforms like wattpad or fanfiction.net

the whole point of ao3 is that it’s a safe space for all fics, and that includes fics about taboo subjects

ao3 has always been firmly against censorship since the day it was created, that’s why it’s run by fans, for fans, on fans’ donations, why it’s a nonprofit organization, that’s also why it has no ads or algorithms or any of those capitalism bullshit

if you have a problem with that, go to fanfiction.net or wattpad. no one forces you to stay in the house made specifically for the (affectionate) freaks

It is worth adding that AO3 is the obsessively detailed and thorough tagging website. You can literally filter those results any way you want. Deeply offended by "Non-Consensual Lotioning" there is a tag for that. Sick of seeing "Inappropriate Use of the Force"? Just don't! You never have to see "Bakugou Katsuki Swears A Lot" again!

It really couldn't be more helpful to every individual's unique tastes/aversions than this.

Also all of their code is available online and they specifically offer support if you want to take that code and go make your own website. They actively encourage it in fact. The initial goal of AO3 was to be a backup repository of last support, an archive, not the fanfiction hub of the internet. They envisioned a world in which people would take their code and go build their own more focused fanfiction hubs, with A03 being the backup.

But they did a really good job. And it turns out people actually prefer free accessibility over not having to check an exclusion box to avoid seeing a particular flavor of story. They are and continue to be committed to helping anybody who wants to make their own version of the website. They are literally the single most committed group on the planet to helping you personally make your own fanfiction website which doesn't have whatever particular squick or fandom you don't like.

If you have a problem with AO3, they are offering up everything you could ever possibly need to change that on a silver platter.
