A question I get asked a lot while working at a public library is "how do you deal with homeless people?"

And the answer is, we don't.

The unhoused people who come here seeking refuge 99% of the time understand that they will be kicked out if they misbehave.

The people you have to watch out for are Jessica, who only came because the kid she didn't want had to visit for a homework assignment and she just *needs* to yell at her child for asking to borrow two books or stay an extra five minutes, or Michael, who came in to look at porn on our computers for whatever fucking reason, or Karen who just wanted to come by to throw a fit that the particular book she wanted was checked out and harrass our staff about our collection being too limited.

99% of the time, the people we need to ban are middle to upper-middle class white people while the homeless and mentally ill/disabled people mind their own damn business and are honestly some of the best patrons we have.

I bring this up because today we had a man come in. He stopped at the desk, pulled up a chair and said "I'm newly homeless and was living in my car. I'm disabled. It was impounded. It's raining. I don't have a phone and I don't know where to go tonight."

And we did what we could to help. He was incredibly kind and patient despite his obvious anxiety and stress, more than most able bodied, housed patrons are to us under much less dire conditions. I liked knowing that we were the first place he came.

We have so many people like this who come in everyday. Many are quiet and keep to themselves, but sometimes they talk to us.

They tell us about how they're taking a few courses on a scholarship they applied for from our library's computer at the local community college to get their diploma. Or ask about a manga or dvd or book we might have to help them pass the time.

One woman, who comes in daily with her tattered walker always says hello to me and likes to work on the new jigsaw puzzle with me when we set one out.

So like, treat unhoused people like people. Treat disabled people like people. I don't want my library to feel like the only safe space in the world, but I'm glad it can be one of them.

I'm so sick of hearing about how "the homeless are ruining everything" when they are some of the kindest, most respectful people here. Sometimes they mutter, might not have had a place to shower, and might need a little extra space for their backpacks but that's FINE. It Doesn't Matter Actually. None of that is a problem or any of my business to care about (unless they request help/services), and I also don't think it's any of yours.

libraries provide vital and lifesaving services and i will die on the hill you have to let people who are mentally ill and disabled and homeless and politically disagreeable to you still access those rescourses. its simply too important to society

Absolute yes to all of the above! I do want to add as a point of nuance though, which is that Michael who watches porn on the computer is also part of why its so important that libraries exist - they're places where you can access the internet for free, where the values of the library heavily emphasize privacy. As long as it's not disrupting other patrons, thank god that one guy can watch porn at the library, because truly, everyone else can watch porn on their phones or whatever wherever they want in the library and staff can't really stop them unless it becomes disruptive- it means that the library is doing its job, which is bridging a gap to level the playing field on what technologies everyone can access (especially important in areas with greater degrees of digital divide), and it means not bothering you about what books you check out, what questions you ask, nor what websites you visit when you're there. That shit's a super important part of library work, and when we start making moral assessments on what's on someone's screen and kicking them out for it, we're doing a disservice to the purpose of the library and setting a scary precedent for the circumstances in which we're willing to overstep that privacy.

It's a hard balance to strike, because library staff do have to step in when it's disruptive to other patrons being able to use library services as intended or when it becomes a behavior that's disruptive to other patrons accessing library services, but that one guy being able to watch porn on library computers is a good thing, and it's important to set aside whatever moral judgements you have on that to protect patron privacy and remember that it's an invaluable part of library services that you do not want to lose, because loss of that privacy is what scares people away from using our resources to do other things that are scary - like looking for legal help for immigration issues, or collective organizing for your union or your community, or learning about what it means to be transgender as a teen. Things that people want and in many cases need privacy around, which I'm so grateful that public libraries can provide.

wanted to talk about it some because i have thoughts:

the sink in a disabled household is a constant source of stress and yuckiness and i wanted to make some sinkdog fanart with that bit of pain in it. we don't usually see her all gross and dirty and miserable.

someone on tumblr talked about how sinkdog is kinda cathartic because you scoop all the yucky parts out of the girl to make her into an object of cleanliness (and how it's ironic because she's kink art) and it had me thinking about how sinks are also yucky. feeling like even if you scrape yourself hollow, girlhood can still feel dirty. inescapable. plus the torment that you'll never be really done doing dishes because more dirty dishes appear daily.

ooh i'm really glad this could resonate with you. i wish all the alters with single roles to not feel too trapped or worn out by them. virtual hugs.

she's very much tethered there :( it's about how there's disabled and chronically ill people that, even WITH all the cleaning tips and tricks and aids and lifehacks in the world, will still have dirty sinks. how we've got to overcome that guilt about it. there will always be more dirty dishes. we will always be fatigued. it's frustrating, really frustrating. sometimes it is not a safe amount of clutter and we do need to ask for help. but even at our best we will not have a pristine house, and this is okay. our poor sinkdog is in the middle of the frustration but she will be okay too. even if she isn't clean.
