So I showed this to a physicist and they were like "Oh! Yes! It's a figure from Fred Espenak's very old paper where he did a bunch of eclipse graphics! I've been looking at these my entire internet life, basically, for every solar eclipse! They called him Mr. Eclipse. He just passed away recently 🥺"

Anyway apparently Mr. Eclipse made 5000 years' worth of solar eclipse graphics, which you can find the simpler versions of here

So now instead of laughing at NASA for their outdated graphics I'm emotional about Mr. Eclipse and his hard work

This caption is not actually correct, the fawn and bobcat were not found in an office together cuddling after a forest fire. The bobcat kitten was found first incredible dehydrated a week prior and then the 2009 Jesusita forest fire occurred and the rescue then had to deal with a huge flood of animals. Animal Rescue Team was saving as many animals as they could, but because of the massive number of animals they ran out of space and didn’t have any choice but to temporarily place the two together while they were running more rescues.

Usually, you would never house these two species together, but when in an emergency situation with literally nowhere else to put them, the rescue had to do it. Luckily for them, the 3 week old kitten and 3 day old fawn quickly bonded in their dire circumstance and several very cute photos were taken before the two were separated to be raised separately for release once the situation had cleared up and there was space for the fawn.

Learning the whole story also means that you get to find out that there are more photos!!

I don't read enough history, but what I hate about history is how this field you'd imagine would be fairly stable is deeply embroiled over feuds about interpretation, and in fact the incentives actually seem to point that way, since feuding over interpretation is a more viable career path than research alone

the way you're supposed to handle this is by reading lots of history and being up on the feuds, but that feels onerous in the same way it's onerous for pop culture. at the same time, I take the point that there's no truly unbiased perspective, particularly not in a field built around reconstructing the whole world from a few scattered remnants. what I feel is missing here -- and this is true of a lot of highly politicized disciplines -- is a guide that encompasses the feuds from the perspective of someone who's interested because they love drama, rather than because they're invested in a particular winner. I guess what I'm saying is, we need more history primers that are grounded in a gossip's view of historiography.
