the other great thing about riku is like. he is experiencing a crushing amount of guilt and going through utter misery in endgame kh1. but he is reaping what he has sown. he did in fact do a whole lot of utterly awful stuff, past the point of even being able to plausibly say ‘well his heart was in the right place’ or ‘he did what anyone would have done.’ no, he was a villain. he made some terrible choices that can’t be handwaved away even by his age or relationships or circumstances. his evil was real but so is his sincere regret and repentance. and that’s beautiful to me because it feels increasingly rare. it’s always either an evil character with a slipshod redemption or it’s someone who’s not really that guilty beating themselves up a whole bunch. but riku dove headfirst into the darkness and took his loved ones with him and then in his effort to do good developed a severe case of tunnel vision and just really got way too comfortable treating everyone else badly and then he made a deal with the devil and got his life ripped away from him and had to watch sora sacrifice his own life to be kairi’s hero after all and . yeah. honestly even a fraction of that misery would be enough to stoke a change of heart in him but they absolutely put him through the wringer and it clearly ends up working as far as driving his sincerest repentance

like even flooding destiny islands with darkness and threatening if not ending the lives of its citizens, even accidentally causing kairi to lose her heart, could have been forgiven. he could have run to sora and said i’m sorry i messed up please help me find a way to save kairi. but he got angry and jealous. he let maleficent corrupt him so fast. he was far too proud to walk alongside sora’s new friends (who weren’t even really that much of friends at that point he just assumedddd). too proud to fess up to the truth. too jealous of the keyblade. too insistent upon continuing to be The Hero like he had always been for everyone on the islands. he never would have guessed that that role of his would change. he could not let go of that ego even for a moment, even in the worst of times. he made it his identity and became blind to reality. he thinks The Hero can’t possibly be wrong. THAT is what damns him. but his repentance, the continued hope of his friends, and his humility in relinquishing control to sora save him. masterpiece

idk man sometimes i like it when video game writers are allowed to plan a series of events that happen in a specific order and affect each other in turn to become an overarching narrative, and i don’t mind trusting those writers to take me through those events in the order that is emotionally effective. i don’t really care if a game forces me to go through the forest area first before i can attempt the icy area because maybe there’s things that happen in the forest area that inform later scenes in the icy area. maybe we don't need more superficial player choice open world concepts if it comes at the cost of the ability to write a story with actual significant plot events and character development in each section
