inspired by @anidstar and @gabeperrwoah (ty for the encouragement) I've compiled a long list of my favourite things on the wonderful platform of archive of our own under the willmack tag.

I've contemplated doing this for a while. No, no one asked me. However, I've been wanting to compile a list of my favourite completed works and wips for my own enterainment, and also to give some love to amazing authors out there who inspire me to write like genuinely I'll read a paragraph of theirs and sit above my draft for two hours

also I will inevitably lift elements from each fic that consciously or subconsciously try to emulate / envy through writer eyes, but this is always in appreciation over any jealousy or malice (i.e. I'm also not trying to copy these people help and it also doesn't mean that was the best element even, it's just one that stick with me) But i will aim to provide my review in pink, and the actual summary in white

I have been obsessively reading WM fics for nine months now, non-stop. went through all my bookmarks and subscriptions for this. buckle in. gonna be a long one.

One-shot/short

stare slave djedovino (by pertinence) - the best character study i have ever read. also as someone who has spent a lot of time in croatia: the landscape and ferry as scarily realistic. if you want to get sucked into family dynamics, read this rn.

i'm pretty sure everyone and their ,other has talked about this fic. I remember @0rdinaryth1ngs 's comment which was very accurate: this is not romance. the summary is a bit misleading, although summaries do not owe you specific things. there's background willmack but it's first and foremost a character study. that is so amazing it inspired me to start writing.

self-love for beginners (by balancebeams) - the author climbs into the mind of teenage boy and follows his evolution and coming of age. in very specific ways. realizations. grappling. interactions.

this fic is very explicit, so like check the tags, and summary, and author's note. i am convinced balancebeams used an actual brain for this and teased it apart. the slow changes are so patient and explained and real. very biased narration (and reductive view of gender) is done so realistically. the author said this is a labour of love and so believe it, bceause you can tell how it was crafted with patience, and dedication, and probably a lot of rereads and edits.

baby, let me plead my case (by cryproudly) - Will is a gaming streamer and mack is an OF model AU. KK and Laila live in a content house with will. and mcdavid and crosby are mack's industry friends. and it's amazing. hear me out.

the dialogue is so incredibly witty and funny and just fun. i love when authors take the concept seriously and just run with it. gives a bit of covid nostalgia too. at least it did for me. It's addictive, and warning: you will run out of the words to read quicker than you think.

it's monday and I'm thinking about you (by tinymitts) - the ultimate marmon getting together story. i.e. mack is at a party and thinking about will. aiden also features, loved that. will is in boston and thinking about mack. surprise (said no one)

the tone of this is melancholy but it turns so heartwarming by the end. it also feels like you're there while you read it, the atmosphere is so gentle and perfect and immersive.

Pushing it down and praying (by @roansbucketlist) - Will and Mack accidentally meet at party and uneraseable shenanigans ensue. then they go wild-goosechasing eachother around boston campuses and lane coerces mack into having matcha and doing yoga. entertaining at every turn and i'm so serious about that.

the narration in this is so so entertaining. I love the profanity and how it feels like racing thoughts and frustration. for a while, every single time there was an update I would reread the whole thing. like i could recite ch1 to you right now

also shoutout to the "not beta read but peer reviewed from a distance if you feel me" tag, lives in my mind rent free

Blue Under Ice (by tantrum (the notes follow me)) - perspective of Sid (somewhere in insert vague north america gesturing) who notices that something is wrong with mack. horrible parent rick celebrini (his rating is minus million out of ten). (note the referenced child abuse tag!)

this was recommended to me by my girlfriend and we wait for updates with bated breath together. i think the topic is dealt with so delicately and i love the perspective and how complicated and not-straightforward it is even though sid is trying but sometimes that's not enough. I can't wait to see where the story goes now with little Will in the picture.

Cast No Shadow (by @alltimecharlo) - Mack time-travels, and he slowly unravels what happens in his future: the sharks, his relationship with will, and his family is very important!

everyone knows I'm the biggest alltimecharlo fan and I have glazed them twice already in posts so I'm not going to take too long. i want to say the planning and multimedia elements that have gone into this fic are insane, and i am genuinely on the edge of my seat to find out what happens every chapter. I’m eating up the RJ lore

Brill Bruisers (by @opencasketbasketfries) - what if willmack met and started hooking up in a park in boston during college? then what?

the way side-characters appear in this fic and the depth they provide is truly so artistic and amazing, i like how everyone has important role, it makes the plot so understandably too.

a proportional response (by @gabeperrwoah) - it's the turn of the millenium. mack is playing for the sharks and confused, and will is the son of the president of the US. I am not kidding.

i love when people write about stuff they know and find passion in and this is absolutely that. author only has one chapter out but i'm too sat. I won't budge. the research and the characterisation of the sharks roster at time floors me. and colin graf bodyguard era sing me up rn!!!

Long/multichapter

significant lover (by linearity, aka @drivestraight) - the premise is will getting a boyfriend on IR, mack going feral, having some realisations, them being freaky and morally corrupt, and not to spoil but will taking that phone call made me roll around screaming.

i feel like everyone and their mother knows this fic, it's just so devourable (that's a word now), also big up bi mack representation

anywhere you want me (also alltimecharlo) - will is aiden's best friend (bigger age gap than irl) and they grow up together with mack, taking place over years, this is story of how mack's crush develops and then is reciprocated, and then secrety. Everey stage is explored in ample words.

genuinely, this is just the definition of fluff. I've read this 3 times over. it just makes me so happy, and I don't even like age gap stories by default. it's just so tender and unapologetically sweet.

say it once again with feeling (by @cryproudly99) - will and mack are not talking, except their families vacation together at cape cod every year. their getting together and breakup told through flashbacks up until the reconciliation.

i could not put this down, it was so comforting while sentimental. just thinking about the childhood friends to lovers concept makes me so happy but i could never execute it this beautifully like this is everything and more

the boxer (by whiteknuckling) - will gets traded to the canucks. characterisations of side-characters are absolutely stellar, wonderful ensemble interactions. and they play a crucial role in Will coping with the change and coming into his own. also a tragic case of “are they lovers? Worse” (ending happily)

(I consulted my own comment on ch4 for a review): The background aiden drama has me foaming at the mouth. It’s like gossip that waters me, a withering flower. My senses are awakened. The concept of a cherny-graf-mack line is so bittersweet it’s killing meeeee. and “forgets about everything except hockey hockey hockey.” My show is onnnnn

like a comet pulled from orbit (by wcps_marc) - will and mack wake up married in vegas. gary bettman gets involved, legendary characterisation of sheriff rick here, and such cute and fluffy realisations.

Going to admit i was initially sceptical about the concept but so happy i dove into it. again, consulting my own bookmark: Super cute, i liked the details of piecing together what happened, and overall just made me feel giddy. Author said it was Happily Ever After, all capitalised and they weren’t lying. Makes you, dear reader, feel just as content and happy. Also like… who doesn’t like a day at the zoo. 12/10. I will not provide further rationale for the rating.

force of nature (by kallicaria) - they start messing around for hockey obviously. and they keep lying to themselves for years and years and years. so much derailing. blonde girlfriend shenanigans overload. so good.

this fic lives-breathes with me. i am addicted to it being drawn out over years but them also constantly interacting. chs 4 and 5 i especially remember being amazing.

over the wire (by @moncuries) - just this tag: What if mc had a terribly lonely rookie year at the sharks and it was 2005 and he was a closeted homosexual

not that i was conscious in 2005 but i'm pretty sure this is as immersive as it gets. i could not put this down once i started it, I've never ever in my life read such perfect dialogue. and because the fic is centered around phone calls: it works like a charm.

i won't leave you 'cause i still love you (so it's up to you if you choose to go) (by tinymitts) - nine year situationship. lots of mentions of mack's wife. she will suffer the fallout of Mack for decades. His punishment is learning to operate a french press

your boy (by @bluecanvastotebag) - the punch. the fallout. the wife. the kids?! will and mack's kids?!?!? enamoured me.

i've read this three times already. it's so digestible and interesting and sweet at the end.

California 'Verse (series by MackWillmadeit) - this is three works with three perspectives and i think reading them together is how you get the full beautiful picture. Will gets unexpectedly traded, leno gets caught up in the mess of an unspoken situationship, and nobody is perfect. everyone's fucked up.

i remember esp leno's pov hitting me hard. like his evolution (or lack thereof? decide for yourself). i also remember being frustrated at characters and being torn about whether i'm rooting for them, which means they were so perfectly morally grey and messy. again, i think you fully appreciate the story with all three POVs (55k total), will's and mack's first and leno's last.

The roar of the crowd was a physical thing, a wall of sound that vibrated in Mack's chest and rattled the ice beneath his skates. He could taste the sweat and the cold, sharp air, and the bitter tang of near-victory. For fifty-nine minutes and fifty-eight seconds, it had been his. Canada's.

Now, with 1.2 seconds left on the clock in overtime, it was Will's.

He’d seen it happen in a sickening slow-motion. The way Will had picked off the errant pass, from fucking Ryan Leonard, the way his powerful legs had churned the ice, the perfect, almost lazy flick of his wrist that sent the puck sailing past the outstretched glove of Canada’s goalie. The red light blazed. The American bench erupted.

And the crowd, a sea of red, white, and blue, became a deafening, joyous monster.

Mack stood frozen, his stick limp in his hands, his chest heaving. The silver medal felt like it was already being draped around his neck, a cold, heavy weight of defeat. Again. He watched his own teammates slump, their heads bowed. His captain was on his knees. The dream was over. Again.

And then he saw Will. Will wasn't mobbed by his teammates. He'd been briefly swallowed by a wave of blue jerseys, but he'd pushed his way out, his helmet off, revealing his curly, sweat-soaked blond hair. His blue eyes, usually so bright with competitive fire, were scanning the ice. He wasn't whooping or pumping his fist. He looked almost... relieved. He glanced up at the rafters, his lips moving in what Mack could read as a silent "thank God," and then his gaze found him.

Mack felt a lump the size of a puck lodge in his throat. Will skated over, not with the swagger of a champion, but with a quiet, deliberate purpose. The celebration raged around them, a blur of noise and motion, but for the space between them, there was a bubble of silence. Will stopped a few feet away, his chest still heaving, and looked into Mack's eyes. There was no gloating, no triumph. Just a deep, shared understanding of what this moment cost.

Without a word, Will closed the distance and wrapped his arms around him, pulling him into a tight, fierce hug. Mack’s body went rigid for a second, the instinct to push away and retreat into his own misery screaming at him. But the familiar feel of Will, the solid muscle, the warmth, the scent of his piney deodorant, was a balm against the searing pain. His own arms came up, but the embrace was weak, half-hearted. A surrender.

He was exhausted. Physically, mentally, and emotionally broken. He could feel the heat behind his eyes, the telltale prickle of tears he refused to let fall.

Will pulled back, just enough to look at him. His own eyes were glassy, and his smile was small, sad, and utterly genuine.

Mack sniffled, forcing a crooked, wavering smile onto his face. His voice was hoarse, barely a whisper, choked with the emotion he was trying so hard to hide.

“Fuck you,” he breathed.

Will’s smile widened, just a fraction, and his grip on Mack’s shoulders tightened. He gave a single, short, breathless laugh. His reply was just as quiet, just for him.

“I know, Mack”

After that Will is called to be with his team again, Mack knows that naturally, it still hurts to feel him peel off him and skate over his bench. The medal ceremony happened in the blink of an eye, Mack didn’t even remember receiving the medal. He just knew he was back at his hotel room, suitcase half opened, his Canada merch all over the room. He needed to clean up. He didn’t really want to though. So instead he plopped himself on his bed and curled into a ball, hoping that sleep would take over and this all would disappear.

He rationally knows that someone needed to lose, he prepared himself for it if it happened. But it was so fucking conflicting to see your best friend winning, making his dream come true, being proud of him, while at the same time feeling the biggest slap on his face and disappointment and devastation and despair possible.

So Mack truly just wanted the earth to swallow him. He was about to fall asleep when a knock came on his door. He groaned and dried the tears on his face with the sleeve of his sweatshirt, he mumbled “could they leave me fucking alone man” as he opened the door just to find Will. Yes, his Will, standing outside with a paper bag from chipotle’s. Where did he even get that?

Mack stared at him, his hand still frozen on the door handle. The hallway light framed Will's silhouette, catching the damp ends of his curly hair, he must have showered already, changed into a simple gray hoodie and pants. No Team USA gear. No gold medal hanging around his neck. Just Will and a paper bag.

"You look like shit," Will said quietly, holding up the food like a peace offering.

Mack blinked, his voice still hoarse. "You just won the Olympic gold medal. Shouldn't you be—I don't know—drinking champagne or doing press or fucking something?"

Will shrugged, that familiar, infuriatingly casual shrug. "Did all that. Told them I had a headache. Came here." He tilted his head, those blue eyes scanning Mack's face with an intensity that made Mack's chest ache all over again. "You gonna let me in, or do I have to eat two burrito bowls in the hallway?"

Mack should have said no. Should have slammed the door and crawled back into his ball of misery. Every rational part of his brain screamed at him to protect himself, to not let Will see him like this, red-eyed, puffy-faced, and ridiculous.

Instead, he stepped aside. Will moved past him into the hotel room, his presence immediately filling the space. He set the bag on the small desk, glanced around at the chaos, the scattered Canada merch, the half-open suitcase, the crumpled towels on the floor, and said nothing. Just started quietly tidying, folding a hoodie and setting it on the chair, kicking a stray sock toward the corner.

"What are you doing?" Mack asked, his voice cracking.

"Cleaning." Will picked up a discarded Team Canada hat and placed it gently on the nightstand. "You're a disaster when you're sad. Always have been, and I know you hate having a mess, so.”

Mack let out a broken laugh, something between a sob and a scoff. He sank back onto the edge of the bed, his shoulders slumping. "I don't want your pity."

"Good," Will said, turning to face him. He crossed his arms, leaning against the desk. "Because I don't have any. I'm not sorry I won. I'm not sorry for my team, my country, or myself. That was the best moment of my life, Mack. Scoring that goal? Hearing that silence before the explosion? It was everything."

Mack flinched, his jaw tightening. "Then why are you here?"

Will's expression softened. He pushed off the desk and walked over, stopping in front of Mack. He reached down and gently pried Mack's clenched fist open, lacing their fingers together. His thumb traced the inside of Mack's wrist, a quiet, grounding rhythm.

"Because the second best moment," Will said, his voice dropping to that low, intimate register that was only for them, "was looking up and seeing you on the ice. And knowing that even though I just broke your heart, you were still gonna look at me like I was the only person in that rink."

Mack's breath hitched. He looked down at their joined hands, at the way Will's fingers fit perfectly between his. "I told you to fuck off."

"You said 'fuck you,'" Will corrected, a small smile playing at his lips. "Big difference. 'Fuck off' means go away. 'Fuck you' means you're pissed but you still want me here."

"Fuck you," Mack repeated, but this time it was weaker, the words dissolving into a shaky exhale. His green eyes finally lifted to meet blue, and he felt the tears threatening again. "I'm so proud of you. And I hate you so much right now. And I don't know how to feel both at the same time."

Will reached up with his free hand, cupping Mack's jaw, his thumb brushing away a stray tear that had escaped despite Mack's best efforts. "You don't have to figure it out tonight. You just have to eat something and then let me hold you until you fall asleep. Okay?"

Mack swallowed hard, the lump in his throat making it almost impossible to speak. He nodded once, a jerky, broken motion.

Will leaned forward and pressed his forehead against Mack's, their breath mingling in the small space between them. "I love you," he whispered. "Even when you're a sore loser."

Mack let out a wet laugh, his hand coming up to grip Will's hoodie. "I hate you."

"I know, buddy." Will kissed his forehead, soft and lingering. "I know."

Omega4omega Willmack who become best friends because they’re the two rookie omegas on the team (it’s rare to have that many omegas, most teams only have one or two total, but the Sharks have several, however, the older ones are already mated.) So they spend all their time together. They room together on the road because it’s safe. They’re literally attached at the hip and it’s like they don’t need anyone else. Mack’s never been with an alpha (never been with anyone actually), but Will has, and he hated it. He hated the way the alpha felt entitled to him. Hated the way he felt trapped. Hated how desperate his heats made him, and the alphas that would just laugh and call him pathetic, but he needed it so bad that he had to just suck it up and let them have their way.

Meanwhile Mack has just been suffering through his heats alone, because his father made him feel like being an omega was something shameful that he had to overcome in order to be successful rather than something he could embrace.

So the first time Mack goes into heat while they’re together, they’re in a hotel in some bland city that doesn’t matter, and Mack hesitantly approaches Will after dinner and says, “I’m going to ask for my own room.” And Will’s eyes narrow in confusion. Has he done something wrong? He wracks his brain but can’t think of anything, and then Mack just shakes his head. “I just don’t want to, um, bother you,” he says. And Will can smell it, the shame and fear coming off him in waves, but also, underneath it, the smell of slick, of need. Will immediately understands, and his chest instantly clenches, upset that Mack thinks this would ever be a bother to him.

“Mack, it’s okay. You don’t have to be alone. I can…” he trails off, not sure if what he wants to offer is okay. But Mack blinks at him, waiting for him to continue, and it’s soft and sweet enough to make him take the leap. “I can try to help,” he says.

Mack’s so shy about it, so in his head about this making him weak, that it’s not something anyone should see, but Will promises it’s okay. Tells him he gets it. Like, if anyone is going to understand, it’s him. And so he lets Mack crawl under his covers, and holds him close as his body heats up and trembles, and when Mack’s finally so gone in it that he can’t control himself anymore, Will lets him rut up against his thigh, feeling his slick leaking through both their pajama pants. And Mack is clinging to him, his face buried in his neck, and they’re both inhaling each others scent glands, and Will is petting Mack’s back and murmuring over and over, “It’s okay, you’re okay, I’m here.”

And Mack’s crying softly by the time he comes, and he’s shaking violently in Will’s arms, and Will kisses the top of his head. “Feeling better?” he asks softly, and Mack nods slowly, but then mutters, “Still hurts. Still feels like… I need more.” And Will knows what he means. Knows that only an alpha can really fix that. And it squeezes his chest painfully that there’s nothing he can do.

Things go on like this for a while. Will tries to encourage Mack to find an alpha, because Mack’s heats are so painful, infinitely worse than Will’s, and maybe that’s because Will’s been with alphas and Mack never has. But Mack just glares at him when he suggests it. So Will does his best to help Mack, and their relationship is genuinely so good. They’re so close. They trust each other like no one else. They share a bed now. They cuddle. They’re calmed by each other’s scents. Will sleeps with his face buried in Mack’s neck, his soft sweet scent the only thing that can instantly put him to sleep. And for Mack, it’s Will’s arms around his waist, Will’s chest pressed firmly against his back.

Mack goes into a particularly bad heat once when they’re back in San Jose. And he’s home alone in Jumbo’s guest house, and Will isn’t there for him to crawl into bed with and silently ask for help. And it’s so much harder to actually ask for help, to call Will and ask him to come over, so Mack tries to tough it out, but it’s so bad. He’s shaking violently in his bed, burning hot, covered in sweat, pain radiating through his body from the need, the desperation. He tries using his fingers but it’s not enough. He takes every bit of strength he has to reach for his phone and text Will, “Please, I need you.”

And Will is there as fast as he could physically make it, and he scoops Mack up into his arms and runs his fingers through his hair and down his back and murmurs, “Oh Mackie, it’s okay, I’ve got you.” And Mack whimpers and sobs into his chest and says, “It hurts so much. Will. I need you, please.”

And Will doesn’t know what he can do. He wants so badly to be enough for Mack, but he knows he can’t be. Still, he lets Mack guide his hand towards his cunt, drags his fingers through his slick, slowly pushes them inside his warmth. Mack’s grip on his forearm tightens as Will thrusts his fingers into him, and he whimpers, “More, more Will, I need—” And Will gives him more, gives him as much as he can, but it’s not enough. It’s never going to be enough. And Will squeezes his eyes shut and begs and pleads that he could be enough for Mack, that he could give Mack what he needs, take care of him in the way that he so craves to.

And as he feels Mack clench around his fingers, feels his body start to tremble in the way he no intimately knows means he’s close, something in Will’s biology awakens. His face is already pressed into Mack’s neck, but he shifts just a little further back, mouthing at the hot skin of his nape, and then he pulls his lips back, his teeth scraping against Mack’s skin and Mack shivers violently, clinging to him.

“Mack,” he breathes out in a choked whisper. “Mack, can I?” And Mack nods, knowing exactly what he’s asking, and gasps, “P-please.”

And Will sinks his teeth into Mack’s neck, biting down hard on the skin, and Mack cries out in his arms but it’s not in pain. Will feels slick gushing over his hand as Mack shakes and moans, and then slowly both of them still, freezing as they become aware of the shift, of Will’s scent changing. Will pulls away from where his teeth have left a wound on Mack’s neck, and both their eyes are wide as they stare at each other.

Mack’s eyes are wild, pupils fully blown black, staring at Will with such an intensity that it scares him a little. And Will feels like he’s moving in slow motion, everything is fuzzy and feels very far away, like when you’re drunk and you feel like you’re watching your body from ten feet in the air.
