Hi! I'm Anna and I'm new to Tumblr, so any advice on how this platform works would be greatly appreciated. I plan on mostly posting about Death Note, sometimes about k-pop, and maybe occasionally a crossover between the two. (Also maybe Taylor Swift. Not really a fan of her as a person considering the whole billionaire thing, but definitely a fan of her music.)
I love writing and creating art, which I intend to share on this blog. Writing stories and plot lines is something that I enjoy, but overall I imagine I'll write the majority of my posts about my thoughts on certain topics (mostly Death Note characters, as mentioned previously). As for art, digital art isn't really my thing, but I love exploring all kinds of physical tools and will probably post art made with several different mediums. I wouldn't consider myself a particularly skilled artist, but the only way to improve is to keep trying.
I doubt many people will see this introduction or care about it, since again I'm new to Tumblr and am not sure how to build an audience or even if anyone would like what I create, but I'll just post a few pieces and see what happens. Hopefully through interacting with others in my fandoms I'll be able to integrate into this community! I also have asks open, so once I start posting, if you like my writing and art feel free to request headcanons or drawings or whatever else you may desire.
I'm a big fan of Mello from Death Note, and would consider him one of my special interests considering how long I've liked him by now (and yes, I am autistic). As for k-pop, I particularly love BLACKPINK (my bias is Jisoo) (they're another special interest), Taeyeon from SNSD's solo music, TWICE (I bias OT9), and BoA. I enjoy a lot of other artists as well, though.
I suppose that's mostly it for now. I would love to befriend almost anyone in these communities. There are naturally people who I would rather not interact with: the usual list of racist, homophobic, transphobic, sexist, ableist, etc. (adding an etc. in case I've forgotten anything, which knowing me, I probably have). I also don't want to interact with people who use generative AI in their lives for anything that's not entirely necessary (I can't imagine many situations where it would be necessary, but I'm willing to be open-minded).
If you've got this far, thank you for reading this post all the way through! It genuinely means a lot to me. I'll try to be at least vaguely active, and I hope to see you around.
what I think Misa Amane would look for in a romantic partner
Although this post will be about Misa, it is in fact the third out of a series of seven, going through several more of the Death Note main characters. Light and L can be found on my blog already, whilst Matsuda, Mello, Near, and Matt are currently in progress. The next two paragraphs of this intro will be identical for each post, so if you've already seen a different part of this series of posts feel free to skip ahead to the headcanons.
I'm going to leave my headcanons gender neutral because although I do see certain characters as certain sexualities, I know other people see them in other ways, and I also just don't think that gender is particularly relevant to what I want to talk about. Plus, in Light's case (for example), I headcanon him as aroace, so I'm going to write this as what I think he'd look for in a romantic partner if that wasn't the case, because this post would be pretty boring if I stuck by that belief.
On a similar note, I'll be going over personality traits rather than appearance - I just find that far more interesting to discuss. With that said, onto the post!
Misa Amane
Throughout Death Note, Misa shows herself to be an incredibly dedicated girlfriend, sticking by Light's side even when he treats her very poorly. In order for her to be in a healthy relationship, she'd need someone just as loving and devoted so that the give and take in the relationship would be fair. An ideal partner for Misa would be constantly doting on her out of their natural desire to take care of her and express love for her, not due to any pressure or feelings of worship like those that Misa harbours for Light. A relationship with her would be difficult to keep balanced, but with the right person it could be incredibly healthy.
Since Misa is a very social and bubbly person, someone a little more reserved in public but expressive in private might pair well with her, as they wouldn't be too explosive of a duo but also wouldn't struggle with the fear of addressing their feelings. In the manga, L calls out Misa for being very dramatic, so someone somewhat quieter might be a calming force upon her, not suppressing her so much as softening the enormity of her presence, if that makes sense. The kind of person who would try to suffocate her personality would be a terrible match.
Although I initially felt that it would make sense to have Misa's partner be very up-to-date on pop culture and knowledgeable about her interests, I think it would actually be very cute if they were completely clueless - Misa would take a lot of joy educating them about the topics that matter to her. The same could go for vice versa; Misa and Light are very different people, but she still makes an effort for him, and I think she'd be eager to learn about her partner's interests, especially if they were excited to share them with her.
Alongside this, they would have to be sensitive and kind; Misa is very full-on when it comes to expressing her feelings, and so any potential romantic partner of hers would need to be able to handle her gently and lovingly. She's also been through a lot, what with the loss of her parents and her own near death encounter that Gelus saved her from. Being able to handle the weight of her past trauma sensitively would be a necessary quality in a partner for Misa. They would need to be supportive and understanding, providing comfort when required and sympathising with her sometimes extreme emotional responses without letting any boundaries be crossed.
That's most of what I have to say for Misa! She's one of my favourite characters and I think she's often tragically misunderstood, so I hope I did her justice in this post. Looking back, I feel like I wrote more about what I think would be good for her in a partner than what she'd actually look for (which, as shown in canon, would be whoever Kira was), but hopefully this will suffice. Thank you so much for reading this post - it means the world to me.
I have successfully acquired tickets for Death Note the Musical!
Living in the UK can seriously be a blessing sometimes. I was able to see the semi-staged version when it was on at the Palladium back in 2023, and I'm so excited to finally be able to see the fully staged performance. I would've got tickets when they first dropped, but I had to be sure my schedule was clear on the day I chose, and thankfully there were enough left. The songs are so good (Mortals and Fools has a special place in my heart), and I can't wait to hear them live again.
My favourite character in the musical is Rem, seeing as Mello doesn't exist; I think she's so well characterised compared to how she's portrayed in the manga, and it makes her storyline that much more emotional and tragic. I really like their depiction of Light too - I feel like you're better able to see where he's coming from and it actually feels like he's speaking for the people, at least initially. Manga Light went a little too crazy a little too soon for my taste.
Hopefully a lot of the rest of you Death Note fans on Tumblr are able to go if that's something you want to do - this fandom is very dedicated and is thriving here so much more than I'd anticipated when I first joined the platform. If you've got tickets and haven't watched it before then just know that the show is really great, and you'd be right to be very excited to finally be able to see it! And if you can't get tickets but wish you could, then I hope you're able to see it one day in the future.
what I think L Lawliet would look for in a romantic partner
As mentioned in my post about Light, this was originally meant to be merely a section of a larger post featuring several characters, but I felt that it made more sense to split it up by character. That means that this is the second post of an eventual total of seven - Light is already on my blog, and Misa, Matsuda, Mello, Near, and Matt are upcoming.
L Lawliet
L works on a very unusual schedule and doesn't have a lot of free time to spend with a partner, so he would do best with someone who wasn't overly attached to him and therefore wouldn't be upset by the lack of time he'd be able to spend with them. Any partner of his would need a lot of patience in order to remain understanding when it came to his undeniably unique situation. Considering that L's job is a very dangerous one, he'd probably also prefer that his partner wasn't involved in his work, giving him one less thing to stress about. Therefore, they'd need to be comfortable with being kept in the dark about a lot of L's life.
To put it bluntly, L is a very strange man (cleans himself in a washing machine, wears copies of the same outfit every day, sits oddly, etc.), so his partner would also need to be unjudgemental in order to get to grips with his behaviours and mannerisms. They would have to be someone who didn't particularly care about beauty standards, because although a large part of the fandom perceive L as attractive, the way he's generally depicted suggests otherwise, at least certainly not in a conventional way. Someone unbothered by or even able to appreciate his peculiarities would be ideal.
Slightly counterintuitively, I imagine that L would want them to not have a sweet tooth, hoping that they would dote on him enough to bring him sweet foods anyway, and then wouldn't take any for themself. Speaking of which, I think he'd want someone attentive and sweet, although as stated previously not overly clingy. I can very much see L as someone who enjoys affection in all of its forms, and he'd really appreciate someone caring and devoted as a partner, especially someone who would be willing to help him out and take care of his needs when he was inevitably too busy with work to do so himself.
L would value all ways of showing love, but he'd particularly want to share quality time, considering how little of it he has to spare. He'd be able to take the smallest moments and really make them matter. When on the receiving end, however, he'd prefer acts of service - having someone take the time and energy to do things for him would make him feel really special and loved, something that I could see him feeling insecure about sometimes. L seems like the kind of person who might not consider himself necessarily worthy of love.
And that's all for now. I'm not sure how much confidence I have in this analysis, especially because I feel like a lot of my points are very similar, which maybe indicates that I don't understand L's character very well. I think that some of my upcoming posts are better, though, so hope persists. Thank you for reading, and I hope you'll return for the next one!
what I think Light Yagami would look for in a romantic partner
This post was originally meant to be one part of a larger post featuring several characters, but each paragraph started getting uncomfortably long, so I've decided to split it up by character. That means that this will be the first post of a total of seven, featuring L, Misa, Matsuda, Mello, Near, and Matt in turn after Light.
Light Yagami
Light would want a partner who could challenge him intellectually and actually hold a complex conversation. Someone who was too far below him in intelligence would bore him very quickly, so in a romantic partner he'd likely seek mental stimulation in the form of someone highly perceptive and intellectual. However, he'd still want them to be a little less clever than him; Light is someone who enjoys having the upper hand in any given situation, and the validation of knowing that he's better than someone would appeal to his god complex very well. It might not be the healthiest dynamic, but Light would definitely enjoy it.
Any potential partner would have to agree with his views on justice and his highly debatable usage of the Death Note. Although he wouldn't want someone who would practically worship him like Misa or Mikami did, as they provided no interest through conversation or debate, his partner would need to have the same overall world view as him or else they simply wouldn't be able to get along. That's not to say that he'd want them trying to help him achieve Kira's goal - Misa used her Death Note to try and aid Light's plans, and the little hypocrite responded by deeming her to be evil and villainous for killing people, despite her intentions being to help him.
He'd likely prefer someone steady and calm rather than highly emotional, as dealing with other people's feelings isn't really Light's priority. Someone who could handle themselves and wouldn't constantly need to spend time with him would be ideal. They'd definitely have to enjoy his presence and prefer to be around him when possible, but not in a pushy or sentimental kind of way. I also don't think Light would appreciate PDA - he'd be affectionate enough in private, but would feel embarrassed to be seen acting 'soft' with his partner by anyone, especially his coworkers.
I imagine that Light's primary love language would be gift giving, but he himself would want to receive words of affirmation. To be honest, I'm quite certain that Light can affirm himself perfectly well, but having someone else supporting his ideas and backing him up would be very satisfying for him and expand his confidence even more. He wouldn't enjoy receiving criticism from his partner, although he'd accept advice if he had to, so having them be his biggest supporter the majority of the time would allow him to more easily listen to their ideas when they disagreed with him on anything.
And with that, this post comes to an end! These are headcanons based off of my impression of canon Light, so I've tried to incorporate his characterisation in the source material into this post, but I haven't actually read the manga in a couple of years, so apologies if I messed up anywhere. I hope you enjoyed, and as always, thank you for reading.
Taylor Swift songs I heavily associate Death Note characters with
This might be another post with a very niche audience, because I'm not sure how much the Death Note and Taylor Swift fandoms overlap, but I will be explaining my associations in some detail, so you shouldn't really need to listen to Taylor to be able to understand this post (although admittedly checking out the songs mentioned will likely improve your insight into what I'll be saying). Unlike my previous posts, there won't be a line-up of characters where I choose a song for each one, as this is based off of feelings and associations that have formed on their own.
Light Yagami with no body, no crime
I think this song links to Light and his motivations surprisingly strongly. Both are to do with killing people unlawfully but arguably justifiably. The details are very different - in the case of the Taylor song, the speaker is killing one person in a case that is very personal to her, as the man she is murdering has already killed his wife, a friend of hers, for purely selfish reasons. In Light's case, he has no relationship to his victims, and there are a much larger number of them. However, in both scenarios, the victims are criminals who arguably deserve their fates. Whether their killers are justified in their actions will vary depending on who you ask. The parallels are definitely there, and I find it incredibly interesting to draw them.
Nate River with Nothing New
This song is about the fear of becoming redundant and unwanted as you get older, and I think that it's actually very relevant to Near. He was raised his entire childhood in the footsteps of another man, a man who Near ends up outliving. Being brought up to be the second version of someone else would definitely have been incredibly damaging, leaving him with the impression that he is a replacement and therefore replaceable too. From what we see of him in the later oneshots, he seems to become almost stuck in time. Other than physical differences, he is doing what he's always done in the same environment he's been in for years now. This strikes me as the behaviour of someone who is inwardly very scared of changing and therefore losing what they believe makes them valuable, and this fear of what sets you apart disappearing as you grow up causes me to think of Near every time I hear Nothing New.
Misa Amane with Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus
I am quite sure that I perceive Misa very differently from a large part of the fandom. I often see her depicted as an annoyingly joyful and somewhat stupid character, which I don't agree with at all. I think she's optimistic, yes, but she is simply making the best of a very bad deal. And as for her intelligence? She's very clever, but in comparison to other characters who are off the charts and paired with her more bubbly demeanour, she doesn't necessarily seem it. To me, I see Misa as an incredibly tragic character. She lost her parents at a young age and ended up emotionally attaching herself to Light Yagami of all people, who behaved attrociously towards her. You might argue that he made it clear that he wasn't interested in her, but in many ways he did string her along to further his plans as Kira. Misa had to deal with him betraying her both physically by going out with other women and emotionally by agreeing to be in a relationship with her and then using her for his own purposes without any regard for her feelings. I think that Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus, although also touching on several other themes, captures the poignance of these feelings and this twisted heartbreak in a way that sums up Misa's situation very well.
I think that's a solid note to end on, and I've been writing for a while now (I've found this post particularly hard to word and am still not completely satisfied with it, especially Near's section), so I'll stop here. I still have several other associations that I could cover (I have a lottt for Misa), so I might make a part two to this post if I feel up to it. Thank you for reading!
Do I think these Death Note characters would wear make-up?
Featuring Light, L, Misa, Matsuda, Mello, Near, and Matt! I'm starting to think that these characters might become the permanent cast of my posts, although I'm definitely open to writing about more characters (or removing Matt from the list... wait, who said that?).
Light Yagami: Absolutely not. No way. He would never let that happen. Light would definitely consider make-up to be emasculating, and would think it was only something for women. If he saw a man wearing make-up, he'd likely be very judgemental and look down upon them unless he already had a very high opinion of them, something that's already extremely rare for Light. I could see Misa wanting to do his make-up for fun, but Light doesn't really take any shit from Misa if he doesn't want to, so unless his plans as Kira were on the line that definitely wouldn't end up happening.
L Lawliet: L wears the same outfit every day, and judging from his character design seemingly doesn't even brush his hair in the mornings. I highly doubt he'd ever wear make-up, both because he wouldn't extract any joy from it and because he simply wouldn't be bothered. Doing make-up well takes a lot of effort and time, and L would rather spend that effort and time on things he considers more important... like solving the Kira case. However, unlike Light, I don't think he'd care about whether those around him chose to wear it. It might change his perception of them slightly, but only due to the fact that he likes to analyse people, and whether someone wears make-up or not as well as how they choose to wear it can say a lot about them.
Misa Amane: I think it mostly goes without saying that Misa wears make-up. There's already an expectation for women to wear make-up, and Misa is not just a woman but an idol. However, I think she would take a lot of joy in doing her make-up. It would be something that comforted her. Misa is very fashionable and clearly cares about style, and she would most likely love doing her make-up to match her outfit. On a sadder note, I think she'd also try to impress Light and get his attention through making herself 'prettier'. I don't think she'd consider that a negative thing, but from an onlooker's perspective seeing how Light acts towards her, it would definitely be upsetting.
Touta Matsuda: Although Matusda doesn't strike me as the kind of man to wake up one day and decide to wear make-up, I don't think he'd put up any kind of a fight if a pretty young woman wanted to do it for him. I imagine that after being rejected by Light about the topic, Misa would approach Matsuda and ask to do his make-up instead, to which he'd readily agree. (I think Misa and Matsuda actually have a lot of potential as a platonic pairing.) I think he'd be quite proud of the results, and would wear it for the rest of the day with his head held high. If any of the other members of the task force questioned the new look, he would be uncharacteristically sharp with them.
Mihael Keehl: Mello is always one to break gender stereotypes through his appearance, and I don't think he'd draw the line at make-up. In some of his official art it actually looks like he's wearing a blueish-greyish lipstick, although personally I think he'd prefer a more striking opaque black shade. With every aspect of his make-up, he'd be quite bold - dark eyeshadow, heavy eyeliner, etc. I don't see him wearing make-up that's meant to enhance or hide the features of the face, such as foundation, concealer, contour, or blush. He would prefer to use it for self-expression rather than altering his appearance. I also doubt that he'd wear make-up every day; it would vary depending on his mood and his schedule. Since Mello eats a lot of chocolate, he also might not always opt for lipstick, or would choose a lipstain instead so that it wouldn't rub off due to his eating habits.
Nate River: My logic for Near is quite similar to the logic that I used for L. Near does not seem to particularly care for his appearance, and I don't think he'd ever knowingly choose to wear make-up. I also headcanon that his skin is very sensitive, with his sense of touch being easily overwhelmed, and I think he'd hate the feeling of make-up even if he didn't mind how it looked. Unlike L, rather than remaining unaffected, Near would have a sense of respect for people who choose to wear make-up, knowing the effort and work that goes into it, and he would acknowledge it as a form of art, although it wouldn't be a topic that greatly interested him overall or often crossed his mind.
Mail Jeevas: I still feel a strong disconnect from Matt (don't hate him, don't love him; he just doesn't interest me), but I'll try and give my opinion on him anyway. I definitely don't think Matt is the kind of person to wear make-up. Maybe this is my indifference towards him coming through, but other than the obvious disparity in intelligence I see him as quite a typical man: the kind of person who would dismiss make-up as something feminine and uninteresting. He wouldn't lack respect for Mello for his difference in attitude on this topic, but I think he'd see him as an exception to a rule rather than someone who redefined the rule for him in its entirety.
Now, these are merely my headcanons for these characters, and I am always open to hearing and reading about other interpretations (especially for Matt, who I fear suffers quite a lot in my writing). And with that, this post comes to a close.
which k-pop artists I think Death Note characters would listen to
I've mentioned before that I want to make posts that combine Death Note and k-pop, so here we are! The characters I'll include in this post are as follows: Light, L, Misa, Matsuda, Mello, Near, and Matt. I don't actually really care about Matt, but I know he's popular, and maybe if I write a little about him I too will be able to see what's so special about him and build a clear image of him in my head. Also, this post won't take into account the time period in which Death Note is set, as much of my knowledge of k-pop is more recent groups and artists.
Light Yagami: I don't think he'd listen to a lot of k-pop, or even a lot of music in general. Prior to picking up the Death Note, he was a very dedicated student, and it's recommended not to listen to music whilst studying, which I imagine was his main priority. However, he did have a social life and was considered quite popular, so I think he'd definitely keep up to date with what was trending, and would almost certainly at least have basic knowledge of BLACKPINK and BTS's discographies. I could also see him listening to something quite laid back and gentle as he worked. Maybe a bit of NewJeans - they're not bad background music. The image of Light writing names in his Death Note as Super Shy plays in the background is also a hilarious one.
L Lawliet: Another character who I don't think would be big on music, simply because his work wouldn't allow for it and he wouldn't have the time for it nor would he particularly care enough to go out of his way to listen to it. Like Light, I think he would keep up with what was popular, but in his case it would be to increase his knowledge about the world and the people around him, which could end up being useful to him. If someone actively forced him to sit down and find an artist he enjoyed, I think he'd appreciate the smooth vibe of SF9's music. L strikes me as someone who would look for actual vocal talent, as well as preferring a more mature and classically elegant sound to his music, which SF9 offer.
Misa Amane: Misa's taste in k-pop comes to me very easily. She'd absolutely love TWICE's bright and cute sound, and they would most likely be her favourite group by far. I think she'd get along with Sana really well if the two met (which wouldn't be impossible, considering that Misa was an idol in Japan) and she would definitely bias her. She's the only character so far who I think would actually stan a group or be active in any k-pop communities, but Misa would definitely be a proud ONCE. As for other groups she'd like, I think she'd enjoy some BLACKPINK, mostly the pink side of their music, and also Jisoo's solos. She'd really like most of the discographies of groups such as ILLIT, SNSD, and OH MY GIRL. In general, she'd mostly only listen to girl groups and female soloists.
Touta Matsuda: Matsuda absolutely strikes me as someone who would listen to k-pop, but for some reason I'm having a hard time pinning down his specific taste. I have a feeling he might also like TWICE, though. I feel like he's the kind of person who would listen to whatever was popular, not for the sake of following trends, but simply because it was what he was exposed to the most and he enjoyed it, leading him to listen to it more often. I think he would also be more inclined to enjoy girl groups, but in Matsuda's case this would be because he enjoys looking at pretty women, not so much because that's the music that he actually prefers, although I could definitely imagine that also being the case. I think as well as TWICE, he'd love BLACKPINK and SNSD.
Mihael Keehl: I have the utmost confidence that Mello would love BoA's music. He'd be introduced to it through songs like Hurricane Venus, MOTO, Control, and Forgive Me, and would think that he was so tough for listening to an artist with music like that. Then he'd explore her discography further and realise how incredibly diverse her music is, eventually coming to love her gentler songs even more than her aggressive ones, not that he'd ever admit it. BoA's voice has a quality to it that he'd just understand; she expresses emotions so powerfully. His favourite song of hers would probably be 'Day', but there would definitely be several other contenders. I think that other than BoA, Mello wouldn't really listen to k-pop; he might overhear and enjoy the occasional song, but wouldn't go on to seek it out again.
Nate River: At first I couldn't particularly picture Near listening to k-pop, but then I thought a little harder. He spends a lot of his time organising toys into various configurations, whilst simultaneously thinking very deeply. I imagine that calm and steady music would actually help his concentration and focus with such a task - whilst music can be distracting, Near has proven that he is perfectly able to multi task, so in this case it may actually have the opposite effect. I think he wouldn't choose a particular group that he loves, but would instead select songs from various artists that had the right vibe. This would include songs such as Citrus by VIVIZ (probably quite a few of their songs, actually), Midnight Fiction by ILLIT, and Like A Flower by Irene of Red Velvet.
Mail Jeevas: As I previously mentioned, Matt is not someone I have a deep understanding of, mostly because he barely actually exists in canon material. Therefore, this analysis will be based purely off of vibes. Matt strikes me as someone who would like loud and chaotic music - large parts of Stray Kids and NCT 127's discographies might suit his tastes. I also think he'd prefer rap-based k-pop. He'd enjoy BTS, both the group songs and the rap line's solos. Overall, I imagine he'd prefer noisy male artists, in direct contrast to Misa. He'd probably listen to music as he worked, which would get on Mello's nerves whilst they were working together.
And that's it for this post! These analyses are majorly based on my own headcanons, although they occasionally reference canon material, so if you disagree with any of these then that's totally fine by me. I don't know if combining k-pop and Death Note will lead to a very minimal number of people being interested in a post like this, but I enjoyed writing it, so it's worth it either way for me!
Mello is done! The final product is a result of pencil, coloured pencils, fineliners, and alcohol markers. I don't know if I actually like it, but I haven't drawn for my own pleasure in a long time so I'm proud to have finally done something I actually wanted to.
A quick Mello sketch. I will in fact ink and colour this thing... just not yet.
I fear I am no good at innovation. I have drawn the most basic headshot in all of existence, and it's not even very good. Whatever happened to creativity and imagination? I trust that one day I will gain inspiration...
