Did you know that beetle wings used to be sewn onto dresses? Like, hundreds of them on each dress? It's equally creepy and beautiful.
oh my stars, anyone have pictures?
Something like this I believe!
thatās one of the famous ones, a Lady Macbeth stage costume from 1888. apparently it wasnāt uncommon in victorian fashion:
we should bring embroidery like this back (but w/ imitation wings). we should all be walking around with beads & wings, clanging
Bring this back in 2019
Thereās a youtuber who does historical sewing and costumery who did this recently

OH MY BEETLEJUICEĀ
To everyone in the comments- No, the beetles arenāt killed for their wings. These jewel beetles have short adult lives (2-3 weeks) and the wing casings are harvested after their death to ensure their conservation.
The Victorians did not invent beetlewingĀ art. This species of beetle isĀ indigenous to South and South East Asia where beetle wing art actually originated. Thailand, India, Myanmar, China, and Japan all practiced beetlewing art before the Victorians. Most notably, they have been used for centuries in clothing and art in the Thai royal court.Ā Queen Sirikit has promotedĀ beetlewing art in an effort to revive Thailandās art and cultural history. Queen Sirikit has also forbidden the harvesting of the wing casings prior to the beetleās death to protect them.
Unfortunately, it is hard to find old Thai art online but here are a couple of examples.
(Date and artist unknown. Thailand.)
(RenƩ Mancini, 1980.) Belongs to Queen Sirikit.

Dry Terrain of the American West Captured in a Brief Moment of Color by Guy Tal
The Badlands region in the America West is known for its arid and unforgiving vegetation. The harsh environment is lifeless, but every so often it sprouts a delicate beauty of wildflowers. Photographer Guy Tal was there to capture this rare sight. He says: Ā āOn rare years wildflowers burst into aĀ stunning display of color, transforming the desert into a veritable garden for just few precious days.ā

ACONAV,Ā āAncient Resonanceā (Native-owned)
āAncient Resonanceā is a rendition of a design from an ancestral Olla (oh-ya) that dated back to the early 1900ās or late 1800ās. The Olla became the inspiration for the Ancient Resonance gown, commissioned by Walt Disney World and now on display at the Epcot Center World Showcase. The designs speak of a story of the living world that resonates through time. The living world is an energy that continues to carry the voices of the past. We are a part of that energy that compels us to embrace our existence and rise beyond limits.
