My honest reaction to Tales of The TMNT getting cancelled early just like Rise did, leaving two incredibly inspired and heartfelt iterations axed while 2012 TMNT got 5 seasons of mid

Just wanted to reblog this and emphasize that it's ok to like 2012. 2012 was fine, but it was a show riddled with weird issues and decisions that make me personally dislike it. It was cynical and downright mean-spirited at times, treated its women characters poorly, had an art direction and animation style that was dull and uninteresting, a deeply unsatisfying finale, and other issues. It revitalized TMNT as a whole, but it was also very much a product of its time. Again, nothing wrong with folks who like it. But it's healthy to acknowledge that the media you enjoy has faults and issues that other people may dislike.

If u r curious !!! This is from my iteration of the turts. All the boys are the same age (18), but they consider Raph the eldest, with Donnie as the second oldest, then Leo, and finally Mikey. Leo is still, of course, the leader and decently (they are teenagers. They are still gonna be rowdy and kind of all of the place lol) mature (because that’s just how his nature is), but he obviously appreciates when his “oldest” brother steps in to help him out with making decisions (or as emotional support).

This Leo is post window throwing (lol) by a year, and he is desperately trying to hide his persistent chronic pain (and slight limp) with his usual air of control (who can say if it’s working or not, tho 🤷) (he’s shit talking bc he’s afraid if he doesn’t he’ll pass out🥀) . Another fun fact! He is slightly blind in the eye with the scar, and has trouble opening it all the way. It’s kind of in a perpetual squint, if you will. I don’t show it here very well, but trust!! Think Zuko from ATLA.

I would like to make a full piece with my designs one day! Maybe I will 😼

i love MOST of the design elements. they look like teens to me for sure and they still look muscular and smol and ahksjks so perf. only complaint is that they’re kinda hard to draw and i wish their faces were a bit more squishy like 87 and 03. BUT OTHERWISE I LOVE THEM.

The squishiness is a nice touch. Makes em look like stuffies. I actually like the belts with the letters.

Buuuutttt….

I don’t like that they all look identical minus their mask colors and I never liked the two toed feet. It never looks right to me.

Then there’s them being the version you see everywhere causing over saturation of the design and all that jazz.

They’re at their peak in shredders revenge.

This is kinda a problem I have with 03s artstyle in general but while there’s nothing really wrong with the designs, they feel… bland.

They’re fine but where’s the spark? The flair? The pizzaz?

I feel like the voices carry most of the character personality for me.

They’re just so… eh for me.

I love them. They are precious. The colors. The shapes. The little touches like freckles, diastema and all that. They feel incredibly thought out and each design tells you so much about each character.

I love their chibi proportions and that THEYRE THE ONLY VERSIONS! WHO HAVE THREE TOES! LIKE THEY SHOULD! AND I LOVE IT!

So why aren’t they a perfect 10/10?

Because Leo’s blue eyes are the exact same shade as his mask and it BUGS ME.

Other than that. They are the kings of turtle designs in my eyes.

I love the idea of them being different species. Any ideas that makes each character unique I love.

I adore raphs design (minus the two toed feet). It’s legitimately impressive how sweet they made him look while still making him big and spikey.

Here’s my problem: the other three’s proportions are WAY too human for me. It feels wrong. They’re too skinny. I don’t like it.

Also Leo could do without the yellow stripes. Mikey can have a lot of colors on him cause that’s part of his personality but Leo’s got a bit too much going on. Donnie kind of has the opposite problem. He could use a little more blue and red incorporated into his design. There’s too many shades of purple on him. Maybe add some blue and red buttons/wires to his tech to make it pop a bit more. Or add some white to go with his scientist motif.

Also Mikey should have freckles.

They’re fine, but they look like the 87 turtles with some features of the bay turtles added.

I’d add a point if they kept Leo’s braces from the concept art but since I can’t tell from the leaked picture, I’m going with this rating for now.

Okay I gotta give my 2 cents now, this seems like fun! I want to clarify before I begin that I’m only rating them based on their designs, I am not rating them based on their characters/personalities.

Iconic! They are the ones that everyone knows. The belt buckles is always a cute touch and love their squishable faces, but they don’t look like teenagers (more like late 20 year olds) and I wish they had more to them that made them stick out from each other. Even the freaking animators struggled to tell them apart! XD

2003

Boring in my opinion. I hate how they are all buff, they look like young adults on steroids. Raph is the only one that works with that body type, and maybe Leo, but Donnie and Mikey, Uhh no. I also hate how they just have white eyes with no pupils. It’s creepy to me. Them each being a different shade of green was a nice touch though.

Absolutely perfect! A masterpiece! I love these boys! I love how each turtle all have different heights, body/head shapes, different shade of green, and even different face and body features: Mikey’s freckles, Raph’s chip, Donnie’s gap tooth, different eye colors, etc. Plus I think this is the first time they actually look like teenagers. Ironic it took them this long to have teenage characters actually look like teenagers.

Just like @nrrrdgrrrl2002 said, my only problem is Leo’s eye color being the same as his mask. If his eyes were a hazel color then these boys would get a 10/10 score.

Them all being different species of turtles was a very creative move and a great way to have them all stand out among each other unlike 87 and 03 where they’re all the same and just have different colored mask. I also love how Mikey has stickers on him, Leo’s fanny pack(?) Donnie’s battle shell and goggles, HOWEVER like the others said previously the boys are too skinny, the 2 toes look weird and Donnie, Leo and Mikey look way too human. It’s kinda ironic but I hate how big Raph is but he looks the most like an actual turtle!

Listen, I GET IT. When you grow up with something, it's hard to rate it low. But I didn't grow up with these dorks (affectionate), so I'll disparage them. I don't hate the show. Is it my least favorite? ... yes. Do I hate the animation? YES. It just looks terrible to me? I hate the design? Why do they look like that?

The story is... fine? I dunno guys. Mikey's freckles bumped it up to a 5. It *was* lower. 😬😬😬

1991 - 7/10, Still Jim Henson but SOTO was a terrible movie.

1992- 2/10, No longer Jim Henson, v sad. Nightmare fuel. The FUNNIEST movie and I love it unironically.

2007- 7/10, good movie. CGI is fine.

2016 - 9/10, fight me. Big boys. I don't know what to tell you. The movies are bad? Yeah. The turtles? They are g o o d.

2012 gave an alright design. I wasn’t really a fan of the chibi-ish style tbh, but it worked well enough for me to enjoy the show. Not a big fan of Leo’s blue eyes either. I also didn’t really like the head shapes too much, nor the oversized, swollen limb look (💀). It looked like it would be hard to maneuver with these giant hands and feet’s fr. Still cute tho.

I like them, for the most part. I have some issues with the way their heads are shaped (too triangular for Leo?? Idk), and I want more snout action lmao. I do like how slim they look aside from Raphael (who is supposed to be muscular), because it kinda shows their teenager builds, and highly toned ninja bodies. It’s cool, me thinks.

(If anyone is curious- while Leo and his brothers are all fairly tall, Raphael is still the tallest…yeah. He’s huge (Splinter is pretty tall too, second tallest behind Raph, actually)) (also Lotus is just short)

In my version, Lotus and Karai are twin sisters, and the biological daughters of Oroku Saki (The Shredder). As time goes on, Lotus uses her connections in the foot clan to spy for the turtles, until her father begins to have suspicions about where her loyalties truly lie. Karai, however, is horrifyingly loyal to her father and the foot clan, and will do anything he requires to gain his favor (think Azula from ATLA, kinda). She hates Leonardo for “turning her sister against her”, hence her violent vendetta against him. (He would never join the foot clan willingly… and Karai did ask Stockman to make some mind-controlling worms a couple weeks ago.. wonder what that’s about *shrug*)
