Intro Post

Pilot or Beetle. Over 18, any pronouns (Partial to she/her) Ace & Objectum. Usually on mobile, owner of one (1) incredibly shitty laptop. Motivation comes and goes, but aside from reblogs I'll hopefully post some of my own oc-based work. Only recently became a "fan" of whump, though I've been a long time torturer of the characters (tm)

My interest mostly lies in the psychological aspects/aftereffects of whump. How do the events effect the whumper internally? How does it change how they interact/view the world? How does the caretaker grapple with seeing someone so hurt, and how do they begin to heal? Stuff like that. That being said, there will probably be more caretaking than whumping happening in my drabbles, because that's just what I'm more drawn to.

alexithymic whumpee who struggles to recognise when they’re abused. they have some weird feelings about whumper, but they can’t quite put their fingers on why. maybe they just aren’t good with new people. maybe it’s all in their head.

alexithymic whumpee who struggles to express their concerns with a new member of the team (who is whumper). they feel that something is wrong but they can’t explain why and can’t even express how they’re feeling. their “i get bad vibes from them” is waved off and dismissed.

alexithymic whumpee who is constantly told that they need to “feel their feelings” and “process their trauma” but they can’t put a name on their feelings and they don’t even know where to start.

alexithymic whumpee who hears, “it’s okay to be scared” and thinks, “am i scared?”

alexithymic whumpee who describes events in facts and never references how it made them feel. does their team think they’re dissociating and try to push them to express their feelings more? does their team think that they’re basically unaffected and barely, if ever, traumatised?

alexithymic whumpee who uses heavily metaphorical language to express how they feel because it’s the only way they can try to conceptualise their emotions.

listen up I need to talk about characters in pain alone. a fighter who won their most recent match but who goes home alone to a crappy little apartment where they’re lucky if they manage to make some ramen before they pass out on the couch, only to wake stiff with bruises in a few hours. a vigilante who loses to the villain and gets left on a rooftop to pick themself up and try to stagger home without getting found, arrested, or passing out in their costume. the new member on a team who gets the dirtiest, hardest jobs as an initiation and who can’t admit to anyone that they’re breaking under the pressure because all their teammates will hear is weakness.

I need characters pasting bandages on injuries with trembling fingers as their vision blurs. I need characters desperately trying to haul themselves up just one more stair so they can stagger to their front door. I need characters who make it through that door only to collapse right behind it, watching the light in their bathroom blur and fade before they can get to their first aid kit. I need characters passing out in alleyways only to wake up hours later and know they still have to try to make it home on their own because they think they have no one to call.

There’s something about characters who are unhealthily used to pain that just does it for me.

Maybe it’s the way they silently grimace at the agony instead of crying out as it’s nothing they should bother the people around them with.

Maybe it’s them forcing themselves to stand or walk or speak regularly while their ribs ache or their throat burns or a stab of pain courses through their legs every time they take a step.

Maybe it’s the perfectionism they live by, knowing everything has to be just so and they must be flawless with no room for mistakes. Pain and suffering are not allowed to inconvenience them. Grin and bear it.

Maybe it’s the surrounding characters who are all worried and concerned as they are assured that it’s nothing bad and the character’s had much worse, but they know they should have had neither.

Maybe it’s the horror in their friends’ faces when they see them the next day after forcing them down the night before, watching in fear as they observe them carrying on normally with their hard tasks knowing full well they are not healed, are opening up many wounds, and they wonder,

How the hell are they doing that?

And why the hell are they so good at it?

The thought makes them sick.

Maybe it’s them thinking they don’t deserve breaks or weariness or rest and berate themselves at any small sign of weakness, even when the sign is so minuscule that no one aside from themselves recognized it.

Maybe it’s the distrust and skepticism their allies have from then on, constantly doting and attempting to protect, never wanting to allow them to do anything and worrying profusely when they get the nudge that they might be unwell.

Or perhaps it’s the sheer fury and disgust in themselves when they’re forced to accept help. They’re acting weak and useless, or maybe that’s just what they are after even a single screw up.

If they aren’t dead, they have no reason to act like it.

That mindset is so fascinating to me.(also very toxic lol)

The thing where one character is an optimist and the other is a pessimist, and something happens that just, snuffs the hope right out of the optimist, and the pessimist has to desperately try to do what the other has always done for them, cheer them up. I live for that shit omg.

UNFAIR TRANSFORMATION WHUMP where the whumpee has no choice but to accept their new circumstances and reality:

- Newly turned mermaid whumpee that has no choice but to stay in water/the ocean.

- Vampire whumpee struggling to accept that they need to consume blood to live.

- Werewolf whumpee that doesn’t want to transform, lest that mean accepting they aren’t human anymore.

- Fairy whumpee stuck in a display jar at a height of five inches that is treated as nothing but a cute display piece.

- Druid whumpee that doesn’t want to hear what the plants have to say.

- Whumpee that used to live in a city but now they’re an inhuman creature that can never truly leave the wilderness.

Whumpees that have to leave their own way of life behind unwillingly to conform to their new normal is just so 🥺🥺🥺🥺

Whumpee who was never allowed to think for themself being forced to slowly start making decisions because Caretaker wants them to be their own person.

Caretaker starts off with very small things, always asking This or That questions to keep it easier on Whumpee who clearly doesnt want to do this. "Do you want to sleep on the bed or the floor?", "Would you like eggs or waffles for breakfast?", "Do you want to wear a hoodie or a T-shirt?" - All things that should be easy questions.

Except they're not easy for Whumpee. Every question asked is followed by 5 minutes of silence while Whumpee tries to figure out what Caretaker wants them to say, wanting to make sure they do whatever is "right".

Caretaker respects every choice they make. Whumpee chooses to sit on the floor to eat instead of at the table? Great. Everyone will sit on the floor with Whumpee now. Whumpee wants to wear a hoodie even though it's sweltering outside? No problem. The air conditioner will be on blast.

The first time Whumpee asks for something without being prompted by Caretaker feels like a miracle.

whumpee misunderstanding what are supposed to be comforting words.

"you're too weak to fight." (implied "in your state" but taken as "you're not good enough")

"it's not surprising that you'd react like this" (intended "anyone in your position would be devastated by this" but taken as "you're so predictably sensitive")

"you need to stay here. you're just going to slow the team down." (meant as "you're too ill/injured to come on this mission" but taken as "you're a burden")

i just like a caretaker with good intentions upsetting whumpee more and either feeling guilty about their phrasing or not knowing what they said wrong at all.

CW: Shock collar, degradation, humiliation

Shock collar that activates every time Whumpee talks, until they're terrified to make a sound.

Then after they're rescued, Caretaker is horrified to discover that the chatty Whumpee they knew has turned completely mute and refuses to speak even after the collar is removed

Having to find new ways to communicate while trying to teach Whumpee to talk again

Permanent burn marks ringing Whumpee's neck

Power-suppressing collar around a super's neck

The Villain clawed and spat and yelled, now they sit in shame, their greatest asset stripped from them

Subdued Hero paraded around like a party favour by the Villain after turning them harmless (or the other way around)

A bejewelled collar covered in rhinestones that cost tens of thousands, but Whumpee would do anything to get rid of it

Or maybe they wear it with pride

"There now, you should be grateful I spend so much on you." "Yes, Master."

Living Weapon/Monster!Whumpee collared so they don't hurt themselves or others

Collar so tight it chafes, leaves bruises, maybe even cuts off Whumpee's air supply

Pet!Whumpee who is fiercely protective of their collar, feels exposed without it, so when Caretaker tries to convince them otherwise it only makes them more distrustful

Team gets captured and Leader is dragged out and collared in front of them, the leash tight in Whumper's hand as they smile down at Leader

Prisoner/guard dog Whumpee who wears a collar as a mark of identification with their number/owner on the tag

So I was thinking of a scenario where there are multiple living weapons in training, and one of them more-or-less wants to be one while the others don't.

Maybe they signed up willingly while the others were coerced. Maybe they see the dehumanization as an escape while the others see it as an oppression. Maybe they think the ends they're working towards justify this but the others don't. idk

So the willing(ish?) weapon complies pretty much right off the bat. They follow the training, they push themself with minimal outside motivation, they try to take their handler/trainer's teachings and statements about them to heart. It doesn't take long for them to need fewer and fewer "corrections", because they're not being forced, they're really trying.

The other weapons are the opposite. They resist, defy, fight back. And that's met with more conditioning/brainwashing. Tactics to break them down, to make obedience automatic, and to change the way they think. To make them become weapons even in their own minds.

And in their rather twisted mindset, the cooperative weapon envies them for it. Why do they have to do all the heavy lifting in their own mind while the others get the trainers/handlers to do the bulk of the reprogramming for them? It's hard to convince themself that they're an emotionless machine without autonomy using only their own self-talk. Why are the others offered extra help and not them?

Eventually they snap and shout all their pent-up frustrations about this to their handler/trainer.

Several ways the handler/trainer could respond, but I'm especially drawn to them borderline cooing over the weapon, and assuring them that all they had to do was report that they felt that way.

Bonus points if the other weapons resent them for willingly asking for what the others consider a punishment.

Perfectly Clean Mind Control

Whump: psychological abuse, mind control, manipulation, identity altering, (de)conditioning, paranoia.

Mind control that doesn't dominate your thoughts, it just... is your thoughts. Perfectly rewriting your will and everything it embodies. Not a single trace of resistance because this is just what you want. Why would you resist your own thoughts? Why would you disagree with your own motivations, your own desires?

Mind control that doesn't shatter once it's done, it just disappears. You don't snap back into awareness. You barely even notice. You just continue as if nothing ever happened. Maybe one moment you look back and you frown, because thinking on it, you remember when you happily followed that person out of town, and you remember what you did, you remember wanting to... but that's crazy. Why did you think that was okay? Why did you want to do that?

Or maybe you were under this mind control for so long that even once it's over you look back and say, "Oh, of course I did that." As far as you're concerned you've always held the beliefs you do now. You've always wanted to do these things. You don't remember why, but you've never had to think of why, and it doesn't matter anyway when you've always been so confident that you're right. It isn't until you're challenged on it all and reminded that you never used to be like this, that you were different before, that something has changed that you finally falter. And you try to think of where this all started, try to figure out why things changed -- and all you can really remember is an entrancing pair of eyes, and a gentle suggestion, and then your own mouth responding, "That's a great idea. Let's go."

And suddenly, you realise that you have no idea how much of what you are, what you were, and what you believed you always have been is just a lie. You don't know whether any thought you have now is really yours or just another preciously placed prompt. You don't trust your impulses, you don't trust your desires, you definitely don't trust your judgement.

You don't trust yourself. And you never can again.

Living Weapon Whumpee conditioned and abused by a cruel organization. Pushed to the absolute limits of their body and still punished for their inevitable collapse. Then the same the next day, given no grace for the fact that they're already sore and exhausted from the day before, plus whatever the punishment did to them. Being bullied and abused and used inappropriately just because the handlers can. Yelling and degrading and taking out whatever feelings they might have on the weapon.

Then they're captured/sold/etc. to an organization that's practical and (relatively speaking) reasonable. This group only inflicts punishments for defiance or avoidable failure. They properly use the overload principle, pushing the weapon to improve in increments that don't injure it, so recovery doesn't slow down progress. They're largely detached towards the weapon instead of angry or contemptuous. Discipline is rarely something that impedes its functioning for long, and when it is, the handlers adjust their expectations accordingly. There are rules for how handlers can treat the weapon to make sure it's used correctly.

Suddenly there's a win condition: if the weapon does as its supposed to, it can avoid the better part of potential pain and suffering. And the weapon is so glad and does its best and wouldn't trade this for anything. Of course, it's still a weapon and not a person, so it doesn't need any sort of comfort/enrichment/other "luxuries." But this group, unlike the first, sees no merit in treatment that will damage a working tool.

Then give Living Weapon (an) actual caretaker(s) and watch as their whole worldview falls apart :)
