Caretaker came to an abrupt halt at the sight of the walls in front of them, and started pacing the confines of the walled in alleyway like a wild animal. Whumpee followed close behind him, out of breath, eyes widening at the sight.
“Dead end… no!” Dread filled them and panic started to tighten its clasp around them. The alley ended in a square little area, illuminated by merely a blinking street light and a sparse bit of moonlight. None of which highlighted any small paths out of here or a wall to climb over. The only way out was to go back.
Their gazes crossed as they looked around. The flicker of fear in Caretaker’s eyes seemed like a death sentence to Whumpee. If they couldn’t find a way—
Caretaker opened his mouth to speak, but before he could, both whipped around at the sound of footsteps behind them.
"Hide!" Caretaker whispered, urgency in his voice. He steered Whumpee towards a dark nook in the wall, small enough just for them to fit.
“That’ll never work!” Whumpee protested, but went along.
“We have to try!”
“What about you?!”
“It’s not me he’s after!”
Before Whumpee could rear up and protest, Caretaker suddenly held up a hand to silence them and glanced back. He waved them down and Whumpee obliged, sinking down to sit on the cold tiles next to the large container, hugging their knees drawn up to their chest and trying to press themself further into their little corner, to become one with the darkness.
Caretaker stood in front of them, blocking them from sight. All they could barely see were his legs, feet firmly planted on the ground, posture rigid; ready for a fight.
Footsteps echoed through the damp alleyway, slowly getting closer, and Whumpee held their breath.
"All by your lonesome, Caretaker?" the familiar voice drawled. "I could have sworn I saw you running off with something of mine."
Caretaker bit back the rage swirling up inside him at that comment. He took a step forward, cautiously, making sure Whumpee couldn’t be seen. “We split up,” he snarled. “Looks like you followed the wrong one.”
“Did you, now? You left them all alone? How unlike you…” He looked around, suspicious, but all he could see was indeed Caretaker. He let out a sigh. “Great. You’re not the one I’m interested in.”
“I know,” Caretaker shot back with a triumphant air.
“Oh.” Whumper grinned and took a step towards him. “That makes you think you’re safe? You’re wrong there, my friend. You are not safe until I have Whumpee with me.”
A stab of fear ran through Caretaker and he suppressed a shiver. He knew perfectly well what this man was capable of and if he was going to have to fight to protect Whumpee… That was going to be a losing battle. Though a short one, with Whumpee right behind him.
But Whumper seemed to have different plans. And Caretaker’s breath stalled when he saw the man pull a gun out and slowly aimed it up at him.
“There’s no need for that,” Caretaker said, breathless.
“No?” Whumper said, obviously enjoying the moment. “Maybe there is. Maybe a gunshot will draw Whumpee’s attention and they’ll come back here looking for you.”
“As will everyone else around.” Caretaker gestured to the buildings surrounding them and the sound of traffic from behind them.
The hand holding the gun wavered a little and he lowered it just a few inches. “Now that we don’t need…”
Caretaker visibly relaxed, to Whumper’s amusement.
“But you know what else I don’t need?” Whumper crooned. “You.” And without hesitating, he pulled the trigger.
The shot echoed against the buildings around them. The force of the bullet punched Caretaker a step back. Blinding pain seared through him and he slowly crumbled, hand to his abdomen where his shirt started turning red fast.
“No!”
Whumpee shot out of their hiding place, but too late to catch Caretaker. He smashed to his knees hard against the unyielding concrete and fell to his uninjured side. Whumpee knelt over him, hands roaming over his torso in a desperate frenzy. “No, no!”
“Well, now, what a surprise.”
A hand clamped around their arm and started pulling them away.
“No… No! Let go!” Whumpee wailed in despair, clutching Caretaker and falling back over him every time they managed to break free. “He needs help, let go!”
“Don’t worry, like he said, the gunshot will have drawn some attention.” He finally managed to pull them off the bleeding man. “With a bit of luck, people will find him before it’s too late. By that time we’re loong on our way.”
Whumpee kept up their struggles, fighting to get free, to get back to Caretaker. But Whumper didn’t need physical strength to restrain them.
A harsh click sounded next to their ear and they froze, certain the gun was pointed at them. But when they looked up—
“Unless, you want me to deliver the finishing blow right now and put him out of his misery?”
“No… No, please!”
“Good.” He lowered the gun but kept it in his hand to be sure. “Then let’s go. Before I have to do this again, to someone who has nothing to do with this.”
Almost hyperventilating now, Whumpee turned to Caretaker, who was struggling to push himself up, still trying to get to Whumpee and protect them— when he couldn’t even get on all fours. With a cry of pain he fell back on his front and curled up, hissing, hands over the bullet wound.
The hand around Whumpee’s arm tightened in warning and tugged at them, pulling them away from the scene.
A whisper brushed against their ear:
“If you didn’t want this to happen, if you cared for him… You would’ve revealed yourself sooner.”
reblogging this a second time bc i think it’s really valuable to look at what abuse in kink CAN look like instead of just discussing what it DOESNT look like. I wanna talk about this more but frankly, this isn’t where my experience lies. if anyone has posts on the topic i’d love to read them.
day 1 of liking whump: is there something wrong with me? why do I do this? is there a right way to enjoy suffering or am I broken? i should call my therapist........
day 4673 of liking whump: I Need To Set Them On Fire
something i never see explored with caretaker or friend characters is what it's like to grow up surrounded by traumatised people, but have no trauma of your own. it feels like you're on the outside of this club that you can only get into by going through something Really Bad, even though the people inside the club are happy to welcome you anyway, you know you'll never actually fit in.
and fucked up as it sounds, you want to fit in. you want the awful things to happen to you. you feel envious of what they have, even if that thing is memories of the most awful things known to man and consequences that run your daily functioning into the ground.
you're not sick enough to relate to the sick people, but you've seen ever so slightly too much to fit in with the "normal" people. your problems seem so minimal compared to these life-altering horrors that the whumpees have been through, yet you're not coping anyway. so either you admit that the problem is yourself, or you find a reason to react that way.
give me caretakers that sit through whumpee's stories and swallow back envy. who actively go looking for danger and dodgy people in the hopes that they'll go through something that can put them on whumpee's level. who plan out how to make things worse in precise, structured detail, then get angry with themself because what the fuck are they doing and it doesn't count if it's fucking orchestrated.
