i think the reason "fiction affects reality" trips so many people up is because they think it means "engaging with media that depicts uncomfortable subjects will taint your soul" when really all it means is that "fiction is meant to reflect certain ideas of the world intentionally or not, and it's going affect your perception of it, if you don't go in with a healthy bit of skepticism"
like playing a first person shooter isn't going to turn you into a school shooter, but that doesn't mean that Call of Duty isn't like. explicitly military propaganda.
or (for a more specific but also weirdly common example) enjoying horror movies isn't going to turn you into a serial killer, but if you watch a lot of horror where the killer is "a gender confused man who kills women whilel dressed in drag, because his repressed female split personality hates his attraction to women because it gives her gender dysphoria" than you should like. be a bit criticial of what you're enjoying. or something like that.
Do you people even know about Prompto's photographs
Do you know that in hit game Final Fantasy 15 (2016) one of your party members is this cute lil' nerd and one of his Things is he's a photgrapher, so he's always taking pictures, there a whole system coded in to just randomly take in-engine screen captures of your party as they go about their day-to-day. And whenever you save you get to go over ten of those pictures and choose if you want to save any to your personal in-game album. This is obviously a feature designed for word of mouth fan promotion, because from your in-game album there's a ton of options for sharing your photos or downloading them to personal storage. Which is fun, games are allowed to do that, but. Ya know. Maybe not worth the effort of making a whole system to automatically do that.
Except it's also very baked into the world. There's a couple photos you have to get as you advance through the story, but mostly they're fun so you bookmark one or two as you progress through the game. And as you explore the world sometimes Prompto will ask to stop at scenic locations or tourist traps or whatnot and bam you've got a few more. And if you do this every time you save, you end up with quite a collection.
Anyways, fast forward to the end of the game, when you, the main character, are about to die. You know this. You are marching stubbornly to your own martyrdom, with no hope of survival. And the main character turns. And asks to see Prompto's photo collection.
YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE!!!!! YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE ONE!!!!! You have to pick, from those maybe dozens of silly goofy funny little screencappable moments, which one the main character is going to physically take with him into the last battle and clutch to his chest as he dies!!!!!! That photo you choose will show up in cutscenes!!!!! They make it your save files lockscreen!!!!!!! Is this thing on????
I knew this was a genius mechanic at the time, but reading this makes me remember YES THIS WAS A GENIUS THING
It still kills me you get all those silly picks and onebof them will be the tool to break your heart in the end.
@impatient-traveler
Also the snapshot system was designed by one guy, who is also Prompto's Biggest Stan. He's delightful. And iirc one of the base faces you get to use to make your character in Comrades is his face scan.
Prompto's Biggest Stan is also the sole reason why we got the whole Brotherhood anime (which is a series of short anime episodes that came out before the game and explore the backstories of each of the main characters)
Do you know why he made us get a whole several episode anime?
Because they conducted a survey after the release of the Episode Duscae demo and that survey included asking players which of the bros was their favorite.
And Prompto came in last.
And my guy just went OH NO YOU FUCKING DON'T
And made sure everyone would appreciate our favorite cinnamon roll twink.

I would like to do a low key enjoyable activity for my own benefit, but god fucking damn it. I need to sleep. Eyes need to be shut. honk shu mimimi. I do not get to relax because I only ever get to rest.

Leonid Pasternak (Ukrainian, 1862–1945) - The Torments of Creative Work
oh leonid, we're really in it now
Leonid, you really understand it.
Save me Leonid, from my empty Word document
Leonid what should I do about the emails
Babe are you okay? you reblogged Leonid Pasternak's Torments of Creative Work again
Leonid Pasternak is the best! My favorite of his is The Night Before The Exam (1895).
My man Leonid continues to be relatable
random anecdote for father's day: one time during a long car ride my dad asked me, "you're familiar with Murphy's Law, right?" and i was like "isn't that the one about how anything that can go wrong will go wrong?" and he said "yeah, exactly" and i said "why do you ask?" and he went "well, have you heard of Cole's Law?" and i said "no, actually, what's that?" and he said "it's mostly lettuce and carrots with a little dressing mixed in"
Apparently there’s a “kids shouldn’t be allowed in grocery stores” thing being spread on TikTok because they might scream or run around and look yeah that’s annoying but at a certain point you’ve gotta just put up with kids being a little annoying in public. Sure the kid pouring milk in the isles is the fault of a shitty parent and should be asked to leave, but a single mom with an otherwise controlled by crying toddler isn’t doing anything wrong. I think you’ll live if someone’s two year old starts screaming in their arms in isle 3. It might be annoying but that mom is probably having a worse day than you
Also, is a lot of the Internet just, unclear on the thing where you learn how to do stuff by doing it? You know what you get if you don't let toddlers into the grocery store? School age kids who don't know how to behave in the grocery store, which is worse. Don't let them in either? Teenagers who don't know how to behave in the grocery store, which is much worse. Just ban all minors from the grocery store? Now you have adults who don't know how to behave in the grocery store, and at that point we may as well not bother with society.
Toddler in the grocery store is learning:
How to find items in space that was organized by someone else
How to share narrow or complex walking spaces with strangers
How to operate in a space full of things they can touch and maybe even pick up, but don't own
How to peacefully coexist with strangers in a public space when everyone is doing their own (similar but separate) tasks in the same place
What kinds of food exist
How to tolerate having nothing in particular to do in a high stimulus environment
How to wait in line
How to greet a cashier and complete your transaction nicely
How to pay for things in a store
Most of this they are learning just by following and watching their adult(s). They're also, and this is especially important for families who don't take much public transit, getting to see a broader cross section of people than most other age appropriate activities will readily show them. The only other public place of this sort that a toddler might routinely go is the library, which is different in ways that are potentially instructive if you have only existed for 30 months.

So, the other day, when I was discussing AO3's policy on solicitation, a tumblr user came at me saying that AO3's "no monetization/solicitation" rules were "bullshit" because nexus mods allows fan created mods to get paid.
Look at me.
Look at me right now.

Where to publish research on lingcomm
I love seeing linguistics communication work, and the wonderful ways people do lingcomm to bring linguistics to new audiences. I do lingcomm as part of my job as an academic, which means that I also love seeing people share what they learnt about lingcomm with academic audiences. As my Lingthusiasm cohost Gretchen McCulloch says, it's great to explain linguistics to public audiences, and it's great to explain public audiences to linguists (and other academics).
Lingcomm research does not have a dedicated publishing venue. There are sometimes edited books with chapter contributions or maybe journal special issues. This does not mean there are not avenues for publishing about lingcomm work. I've learnt a lot building and maintaining the LingComm Bibliography, and thought I'd share what I learnt about linguistics and non-linguistics venues for publishing.
Language and Linguistics Compass has a long history of publishing excellent lingcomm work. This journal operates on a slightly odd "invitation" model, but you can always pitch your idea to the lead editor for Education & Pedagogy and see how things go. Really good for overviews and big picture topics.
Innovations in Linguistics Education does not say so explicitly on their website at the moment, but they’re open to discussions of linguistics education in all contexts, including lingcomm contexts. It is just starting out, but I appreciate that it's a diamond open access journal, meaning it's free to publish and read content.
Linguistics Vanguard is an online journal for short (3000 word) articles about innovative approaches in all major areas of linguistics. They publish on lingcomm, I know this in part from doing the bibliography and in part because I'm currently (2024-2026) an Area Editor with lingcomm as one of my listed specialisations.
Journal of Science Communication (JCOM) is the journal outside linguistics that most aligns with lingcomm. It's also great because it's a diamond open access journal. They run a whole series called "Practice Insights” about specific projects and their success, which are under 5000 words. I know with some scicomm journals there can be a challenge in convincing them that linguistics is a topic in scicomm (argh), so might require some careful framing.
It can also be good to check in with your area or specialisation journal and encourage them to accept papers about engaging the public in linguistics. I always want to see more research about effective and successful lingcomm projects. And, of course, if you do publish something, don't forget to add it to the LingComm Bibliography so I can keep up to date with suggestions for where to publish!
DON'T ASK YOURSELF "AM I A GOOD PERSON?" ASK YOURSELF "IS WHAT I AM DOING GOOD?" OR EVEN! "WHAT'S A GOOD THING I CAN DO RIGHT NOW?"
DON'T WORRY ABOUT JUDGING AND SORTING YOURSELF! JUST MAKE YOUR BEST CHOICES!!
Ok but pls actually do this people. There is no such thing as a good person. Stop trying to be one and starting trying to do good instead
