jack wolfe's performance in next to normal is exactly how ive been waiting and wishing for someone to play gabe for YEARS. making him a more sympathetic character, and really leaning into the fact that while diana is hallucinating him to be 18, the age he would've been if he'd lived, she only ever knew him as an infant.

portraying him as more sympathetic doesnt take away from the darker, more threatening aspects of his character/presence. if anything, i think it makes certain moments hit harder (specifically 'i am the one (reprise)'). he is still hurting his family, still hurting diana, but jack's version doesn't seem like he's doing it knowingly or intentionally. he just really wants his mom. because he was a baby. an antagonist who isnt fully aware that hes an antagonist, because he doesnt really understand that he's hurting people.

I used to hate it when people said the trick was to just do it until ‘do it scared’ started going around, because that’s truly it. Life didn’t start changing until I applied for jobs with one hand in front of my eyes and a trembling hand navigating my computer mouse. Or until I refused to accept that I’d ‘just’ be shy forever while also kind of being nauseous at the idea of trying to be the opposite. Two things can coexist and that’s exactly the point of believing that you can do anything.
