Setting: June 2014 // inc!verse:

“’A Celebration of the Love and Companionship of Kim Taehyung and Park Jimin,’” Hoseok reads aloud from an ornate gold-lettered card as they stroll up to the entrance of the venue, suit bags in hand. “Really? Like, we get it, you’re best friends, you like each other so much more than you like the rest of us. No need to drop $30k to prove your point.”

“Seriously,” Yoongi agrees, snatching the card from Hoseok’s fingers, “I would be surprised, except they’ve always been this ridiculous. I mean, remember when Jimin got down on one knee to give Taehyung that stupid friendship ring in the middle of that fancy restaurant?”

“Mortifying,” Hoseok confirms, eyes becoming unfocused as he immerses himself in the memory.

“Especially when they fuckin’ cried. But THIS. This is ridiculous even for them. Look at this place,” he says gesturing at the beautiful outdoor set-up, the flower arch, the white fabric isle, the chairs. “People get married here.”

“I know. This is a mockery of the institution. Oh hey Mrs. Park!” Hoseok waves happily as she passes by. He whispers to Yoongi, then, “They even dragged their goddamn parents into it. I can’t believe they’re playing along. I can’t believe we’re playing along. We had to buy matching suits. Why did we do that?”

“Because we’re fucking weak to them and will indulge their every request?” Yoongi offers with a cringe. “Even if it means a dumb friendship ceremony?”

“And also free booze.”

“And also free booze,” Yoongi repeats soullessly, bracing himself. “Oh did you get the garter?”

“This is really happening,” Taehyung marvels, eyes wide and shining a deep breath passing quick and hard through his slightly parted lips as Yoongi adjusts his friend’s tie. “It’s really happening. This is it. I never thought this day would come.”

“What, you never thought you and Jimin would finally out-do yourselves for most ridiculous people in the world and do something completely unnecessarily ridiculous?”

“Don’t drag your jaded views on relationships into this conversation, not today,” Taehyung huffs, straightening his suit jacket in the mirror. “It’s gonna work. Me and Jimin are different.”

“You sure are,” Yoongi confirms wryly and with a roll of his eyes.

“Hold the ring?” Taehyung ask, smile lopsided as he gazes fondly at Yoongi.

“God, are you guys ten?” Yoongi whines, snatching the ring box out of Taehyung’s hand and ignoring the way that Taehyung’s hands fly up to guard the tiny box. “Since when are these even a thing anymore? Did you get them out of a gumball machine? Are they inscribed with the words ‘bffs for life?’”

Taehyung pouts his bottom lip. “So what if they are. It’s still true, isn’t it? A lot of things might change after today, but never that.”

“Why couldn’t you guys just express your affection like other bros? By like… I dunno shooting each other in the nuts with a paintball gun or something?” Yoongi grunts, stuffing the ring box into his pocket.

Taehyung’s only response is a blank, confused smile.

“You cried,” Hoseok says with an accusatory tone and sharp eyes, elbowing Yoongi as they step into the after-party. ‘Reception’ it had read on the itinerary that Jimin had provided.

“Allergies,” Yoongi claims, suppressing a sniff as he adjusts his cuff links.

Just then, Mrs. Park passes by, utterly misty-eyed, gently squeezing Yoongi’s arm as she does. “Beautiful wedding, isn’t it boys?”

“Wedding?” Hoseok scoffs pityingly when she’s out of sight, and Yoongi shakes his head in disbelief. “How fuckin’ oblivious can you get?”

Not only is this fascinating, there are a lot of images from art history here. It just goes to show that what you can learn from the past isn’t limited to facts you can know, but things you can do.

My favorite part?

He learned this doing research for LARPs (Live Action Role Playing):

Lars Andersen originally started using bow and arrow to fight in pretend battles during Larps (live action role play) events, where he played a soldier in a medieval-inspired army. While Larps can be about anything – the Danish/Polish Harry Potter inspired larp College of Wizardry (cowlarp.com) recently got world-wide media attention and there wasn’t a rubber sword in sight there – many Larps take place in fantasy worlds inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. And it was at one of these Larps, that Lars started to learn to shoot fast while moving.

In 2012, Lars Andersen released his video, “Reinventing the fastest forgotten archery”, where he showed how he had learned to shoot from old archery manuscripts. Using these old, forgotten techniques, Lars demonstrated how he was now the fastest archer on the planet, and after its release, the video got 3 million hits on YouTube in two days.

Since the 2012 video was released, Lars has studied and practiced, and he is now able to fire three arrows in 0.6 seconds – a truly stunning feat making him much faster than the legendary fictional archer Legolas (played by Orlando Bloom in the Lord of the Rings movies).

The time benchmark he was trying to achieve, according to the video, was the expectation of the speed at which “Saracen“ archers were expected to shoot. In fact, most of the source material as far as I can see isn’t European.

A lot of the techniques described are also used in Mongolian Archery, which requires being able to shoot from horseback, and is traditionally practiced by men and women. You can see a video here.
