Rip Nancy Bobofit you would have loved scamming kids in online forums
"I'm not dead???"
Gabby had given Nancy plenty of time to calm down after their 'argument', if you could even call it that. Gabby just tried her best to calm Nancy down while the girl shouted at her.
She gently knocked on Nancy's door, waiting a second before going in. "Nance? You alright bean-sprout?" She asked. Gabby carried this sort of...calm, about her. Like an equilibrium was reached within Nancy whenever Gabrielle walked in, that didn't stop her from being mad though. If anything it made things worse.
Gabby waited in the doorway, assuming Nancy was still mad.
Nancy let out a muffled scream as she hid her face inside the pillow she was holding. She was so tired of this. Her hands gripped the fabric tightly as she threw it to the other side of her room. She opened the door swiftly, trying her best to maintain eye contact with her sister. She never understood why it was so difficult to do the same things all the other kids did, to be honest.
"I'm fine." She lied, rubbing her eyelids with her hands in an attempt to hide her tears. "Why do you even care? You should be as angry as I am about this." It was a genuine question. She just wanted to know. How. How could this girl not hate her?
Gabby got down to Nancy's level, sitting on her knees to talk to her sister "I dunno why I don't get mad, to be honest." She did know, Gabrielle knew it was her mother's doing. Her real mother, the goddess Nemesis.
Her brows furrowed as she saw the tears in her sister's eyes. Gabby sighed, gently taking Nancy's hands and squeezing them. "As for why I care....I care because you're my baby sister, and I'm always gonna be worried about you. And I'm always gonna care." Gabby assured, the words hanging heavy in the demigod's heart. She knew she had to leave soon, her mother demanded it of her. Gabby just hoped she could get Nancy to believe her before she gave her every reason not to.
"Bean-sprout..." Gabby sighed, rubbing the back of Nancy's hands with her thumbs. "You know I love you, right?" Gabby sometimes hated her powers, she could always tell when people where lying.
Nancy felt the tears start to rise again. This wasn't fair. It just wasn't. She held back a choked sob as she forced herself. Forced herself to be angry at the sister who didn't deserve it. "This. This is why I'm angry. You're perfect. Our parents love you, you do all of these cool things with people that like having you around- and you still like me when I'm just trying to make you mad at me!"
Her hands were shaking as her brain overloaded. She didn't know what she wanted to do. If she should cry and give her sister a hug, or if she should jerk her hands away and shut the door of her room. "It's easier if you didn't care, Gabby. Caring makes it hurt."
She took a deep breath, her eyes refusing to stop looking at her sister despite wanting to do so. She knew something was up. She didn't know what, but she felt like everything was going to go downhill from this moment.
Gabby let go of Nancy's hands to cup the little girls' face. "I know bean-sprout, I know it's hard for you. I'm sorry, I really am." Gabby vaguely knew of this power of hers, she could put people in balance. If she wanted, she could make Nancy feel better...but she knew it wouldn't be fair, imposing her own sense of calm onto Nancy like that.
She smiled softly as she looked down at Nancy. "I'm sure it is easier, Nance, but I promise you that caring is very important." Gabrielle insisted, her faux-fur coat slightly hanging off her shoulder. She wasn't even into luxury-style clothes like that, she just thought it looked cute and wore it all the time.
A moment of silence rested between them, then Gabby pulled Nancy into a tight hug. That odd feeling of equilibrium spread from Gabby to Nancy, for just a brief moment it all felt okay.
"Nance...I have to go away for a bit. I got accepted into a nice ballet school, with dormitories and stuff." Gabrielle lied, trying to choke back tears as she held Nancy close for what might be the last time. "While I'm gone, I want you to promise me that you are gonna be the awesome, smart, super-cool girl I know you are."
"I... I promise, Gabby." Nancy nodded. She didn't know why she swore to do it. The last time she'd promised to do something for Gabby was probably when she was around five, back when it was reasonable for Nancy to be a brat about everything. But the way her sister had asked her to do that for her... How could she not? Siblings were meant to help, even when they hated eachother, right?
"Not that I care. But i'll see you again, right? You'll return by next year, and we can catch up on what we missed." Her voice was monotone, as if she was hiding the excitement of seeing her sister again. She'd spent years keeping her distance from her sister, and there was no way she was breaking those walls all because of a hug.
"...i'll see you again." She repeated. But it wasn't a question. She knew she'd see her sister after her ballet school finished. She had to see her. She unfortunately never had much of a social circle aside from Gabby.
"That's right, Nancy." Gabby lied, rubbing Nancy's back. Being a child of a Nemesis, Gabby hated doing this. Her only silver lining was not specifying when Nancy would see her. "You'll see me again." She save her sister a kiss on the head, then took off her green beret and faux-fur coat. "And in the meantime, you can keep these safe for me."
Those accessories were Gabrielle's favorite, she made sure every outfit she owned matched them so she could wear them every day. Gabby gently put the coat on Nancy's shoulders, it was much too big for the smaller girl, and put the beret on her head.
"You look great, bean-sprout. You might pull it off better than I do." Gabby chuckled, giving Nancy once last squeeze before she went to her room to 'pack'
Gabby didn't come back next year, and according to Nancy's parents Gabby never existed. When Nancy got back from Yancy academy, her sister's room was completely gutted out. According to her parents there had never been stuff in there. They sent her to psychiatrists, each one assuring her that Gabrielle Bobofit never existed.
Nancy couldn't quite remember how long it had been since that day.
Her parents had tried convincing her that it was all a dream, some imaginary friend she had conjured up when she was young. The room that once belonged to her sister was just a spare room. They recalled that she had a friend older than her who had moved away a few years before, she looked similar to Nancy. Maybe that was the reason she had that memory of her "sister"
But she still had that berret she had been given. Same with the coat. When she wasn't wearing it, it was inside the rainbow knitted bag she carried with her. Her parents had no explanation for this. She should have felt relieved. But it just made her feel worse knowing she had a sister, but something terrible must have happened for her parents to avoid discussing her.
Nancy sat on top of an old oak log near the entrance of new Rome, she gripped her spear tightly as cleaned its top. She didn't know what to do next, to be honest. Maybe she should check in with the Augur? He's crazy, but he's sort of fun to talk to. Her eyes left the spear when she noticed a very familiar girl somewhere near her.
Life had been hell for Gabby. She was wanted in numerous small counties in numerous states, and she's pretty sure the entire state of Rhode Island had a warrant out for her. She did everything her mother, and her Ancestor Dike, wanted from her. She perused justice, she chased down those who avoided it and delivered her mother's swift vengeance. It was a fair trade, and as a legacy of Dike Gabby knew a lot about fairness, giving up her sister in exchange for power.
Gabrielle wasn't sure why, but something had been pulling her to San Francisco. Her mother seemed mad about it, throwing trial after trial at her to try and stop her. But nothing fully stopped Gabby, she knew she needed to be here. She had heard rumors about the place she stumbled through the woods towards the clearing.
...A flash of red hair. That was the first thing that caught Gabby's eyes. Years had passed, the little girl she remembered had grown up so much, but Gabby knew. She knew that was Nancy.
She broke out into a sprint, eyes welling with tears. Gabby looked different but those red curls, those freckles, those dimples, the green and grey eyes. It was unmistakably Gabby. But the differences were clear: Those tired eyes, the scars littering her body, the tenseness of her posture. Something had clearly happened to Gabby.
She tackled Nancy into a hug, and that wave of nostalgic feeling of equilibrium Nancy faintly remembered washed over her as Gabby held her close. Could it really be Gabby? Was she finally back after all these years?
"I promised you'd see me again, bean-sprout." Gabby said, her voice rougher than Nancy remembered it.
If this had happened a few years ago, Nancy would have shrugged, maybe even pushed her away with a glare. And to be completely honest, a small part of her was still willing to do that. Roman instincts, you know? You don't want to get too comfortable around people. But by the gods, this was her sister. She was real. And she was right here with her. All she could do was return the hug and blink back the tears building in her eyes.
"I thought you-" She cut herself off whilst her breath hitched. "When mom and dad started telling me you didn't exist, I thought you were dead." So much had happened to her. She could only imagine that things much worse than that had happened to her sister. She felt awful. Nancy had spent literal years hating a sister who loved her. She should have enjoyed it while it lasted.
"I'm sorry. I- I'm so sorry, Gabby." She took a deep breath. Anything to keep herself from crying again. It was so overwhelming, to be completely honest. She hadn't really felt this close to someone in what felt like forever.
"Shh shh it's okay Bean-sprout, there's nothing to be sorry for." Gabby soothed, rubbing Nancy's back. She felt tears running down her cheeks as she clung to her sister, it felt like a dream, like Nancy would disappear if Gabby let go.
"I should be the one apologizing. I just ran away and left you there, my poor baby." Gabby choked out, then she finally soaked it in that Nancy was here, meaning she was a demigod. Gabby pulled back a little, looking at Nancy's purple shirt.
"Bean-sprout...how did I not notice you were a demigod!? A-are you a child of nemesis, like me!?" Gabby asked, cupping Nancy's face like she used to.
A child of Nemesis...that would explain why Gabby always carried this balanced feeling about her.
Nancy blinked, it had only dawned on her now that Gabby was here. As in, Camp Jupiter. That was the reason she had gone missing. It all made sense. At least now, it did. "Nemesis?" She asked. Out of any Goddess Gabby could have been the daughter of, she wouldn't have expected the Goddess of revenge to be the mother of someone like her. Gabby was always... well, nice. She didn't strike the type of person to wish anything ill of anyone. On a certain level, it made sense, though.
"No, uh. Child of Arcus, apparently." She bit back a laugh. It was stupid, to be honest. So many cool Goddesses and her mother had to be the dumbest one of all. "Goddess of rainbows, seems fitting." She added, a hint of sarcasm sparking in her tone.
Wait- how had their father pulled not one, but two different Goddesses? Eh, some things are better left untold.
Zippy...
We both know you have things to answer
You're online and I can see it...
Sigh...
Okay :(
Wait so hypothetically you could prank call as many people as many times you want without a drachma?
"I... I guess I could. Never tried it in Camp Jupiter since that would probably leave me in charge of cleaning after the unicorns, but I probably could."
Do you have any special Demigod abilities?
"Not really. I mean, I can Iris message anyone I want without a coin, so that's pretty convenient. Nothing cool, though."
