Bringing back the Classic looks.

the classic Finnish mix of extreme dutifulness and "we will make actual conversation after a silent interaction trial period of 6 weeks, thank you" can be really funny sometimes. told my coworker that I'd like to save the coffee grounds the workplace generated and take them home "for my mushrooms and worms" and she was just like "okei" and dutifully saved every single grounds-filled filter for weeks and weeks. about five weeks into this whole thing, after I thank her for the coffee grounds and tell her my worms must love them because they're breeding very enthusiastically, she finally asks "so your worms... do they have a purpose or are they just... worms". like sure I'll save you all these coffee grounds every single time I drink coffee, 3+ times a day, but god forbid I inquire about your specific worm habits before propriety allows it. you could be eating them for breakfast for all I know but that's your business
this, I think, is my ideal love language
he was in the fridge!!!
ovbiously this person has done so much research and cares about their tortoise so much but.... the mf idea of having a live tortoise in a TUPPERWARE?! IN MY FRIDGE?? WITH ME FOOD? ahahahaha
the concept of opening someone else’s fridge only to find a WHOLE ASS TORTOISE in there... idk if I’d ever recover
@esperantoauthor when the food doesn’t come to Tesla, Tesla comes to the food
Reminds me of when I accidentally stumbled across this photo for the first time...
mutuals put me in your fridge
Back in 2015, I went over to a classmate's house for group project work late in the fall, and in the middle of working on the presentation, offered to grab sodas for people but they were out of pepsi and Andrew whose house we were at said "Oh, there's more in the basement fridge."
So I go down to the basement, which is well-lit and finished and indeed there are more pepsi but also in the fridge is a massive tortise. This animal was the dimensions of a desktop computer and probably outweighed a labrador. It's not moving, and is set in the middle of a plastic tray so it's apparently supposed to be there. I go back upstairs.
"Hey Andrew." I say, nonchalantly. "So is the tortise in the fridge down there for soup or what?"
"The what?" says the other member of the group project. I don't remember her name, just that she always wore her hair in pigtails with butterfly clips that were based on real butterflies and she had at least a dozen species.
"Oh! No, that's Andrew Too." he says. "His species hibernates so he stays in the fridge for the holidays."
"You named your tortise after you?" I ask.
"No, uh- Well, my grandfather got him in Egypt or somewhere while he was on leave during the war and He was named Andrew, so he thought it would be funny to name him 'Andrew Too'. ...Then Mom named me after him so Gandpa left me Andrew Too in his will. He's pretty cool when he's awake. Lets us dress him up for summer holidays, doesn't bark."
"Oh!" Said Butterflies. "My dad served in the Gulf War too! What unit was he in?"
"Oh no, Grandpa was with the Royal Air Force in World War Two. Andrew Too is going to be 70 this year! We're going to make him a carrot cake!"
This reminds me, My dad’s friend has a tortoise from, I think he said the Middle East, (idk he does a lot of traveling)
And he lives on a lake and lake people have one big giant community so people sometimes just..bring the tortoise lettuce, like their bringing offerings to a god.
I remember once seeing people sitting near his little outdoor enclosure giving him cabbage or smth and asking if my dad’s friend knew those people and he was just like
“Yeah no, I’ve got no idea. But boy does Jimbo know them now”
The tortoises name was Jimbo
I bet in the 20s all the weird German emo girls were thirsting after the Somnambulist
German emo girls be like “ich will 😍🥺”
Don’t hide this magnificent piece of info in the tags.
The bloke (Conrad Veidt) was an outspoken opponent of antisemitism, and when he refused to divorce his wife (who was Jewish), Joseph Goebbels had him blacklisted.
He also donated tons and tons of money to poor children who had been negatively effected by the Blitz in London after he moved to the US, following his becoming a naturalised-British citizen after leaving Germany in the 1930s.
Don’t forget that in 1919, he starred in “Different from the Others”, a German film protesting the anti-homosexuality laws in place. It’s widely regarded as the first pro-gay film. Conrad Veidt was a goddamn hero.
I just feel like this pic is relevant to the discussion
He was also the highest paid member of the cast in “Casablanca” (where he played a Nazi officer, again), even if he only got second billing, because he was THAT big a star.
He and his first wife divorced after… well she said it better than I ever could.
“I excused a lot of his failings and whims because I loved him. But one day he did something to me that I couldn’t forgive. I was singing that evening at the cabaret. I left him home and he told me: “I invited a few friends; we’ll dine while we wait for you.” And it just so happened I had received a new dress from Paris. That evening, after work, I arrived home and what do I see? All these gentlemen dressed as women. And Conrad had put on my Paris dress. At this point, I divorced!”
And as Anita Loos put it
“Any Berlin lady of the night might turn out to be a man; the prettiest girl on the street was Konrad [sic] Veidt.”
Good to see the tumblr sexyman precludes even tumblr

Conrad Veidt was an amazing human. To quote his wikipedia page:
Veidt fervently opposed the Nazi regime and later donated a major portion of his personal fortune to Britain to assist in the war effort. Soon after the Nazi Party took power in Germany, by March 1933, Joseph Goebbels was purging the film industry of anti-Nazi sympathizers and Jews, and so in April 1933, a week after Veidt’s marriage to Ilona Prager, a Jewish woman, the couple emigrated to Britain before any action could be taken against either of them.
Goebbels had imposed a “racial questionnaire” in which everyone employed in the German film industry had to declare their “race” to continue to work. When Veidt was filling in the questionnaire, he answered the question about what his Rasse (race) was by writing that he was a Jude (Jew). Veidt was not Jewish, but his wife was Jewish, and Veidt would not renounce the woman he loved. Additionally, Veidt, who was opposed to antisemitism, wanted to show solidarity with the German Jewish community, who were in the process of being stripped of their rights as German citizens in the spring of 1933. As one of Germany’s most prominent actors, Veidt had been informed that if he were prepared to divorce his wife and declare his support for the new regime, he could continue to act in Germany. Several other leading actors who had been opposed to the Nazis before 1933 switched allegiances. In answering the questionnaire by stating he was a Jew, Veidt rendered himself unemployable in Germany, but stated this sacrifice was worth it as there was nothing in the world that would compel him to break with his wife.Upon hearing about what Veidt had done, Goebbels remarked that he would never act in Germany again.
As noted above, he was also bisexual, a friend once stating: “He was very much in love with a beautiful girl whom I trained. I’ll say frankly that Conrad also loved men, once in a while.“
The man was a bi icon, an anti-fascist Jewish ally, and a goddamn hero and we stan.
More from his Wikipedia page, and repeating something mentioned earlier:
Before leaving the United Kingdom, Veidt gave his life savings to the British government to help finance the war effort.
Realizing that Hollywood would most likely typecast him in Nazi roles, he had his contract mandate that they must always be villains.
There’s a man who knew all about the insidious attraction of “Draco In Leather Pants” 64 years before TV Tropes even existed.
During an interview after playing Major Strasser in “Casablanca”, he said:
“This role epitomizes the cruelty and the criminal instincts and murderous trickery of the typical Nazi. I know this man well. He is a man who turned fanatic and betrayed his friends, his homeland, and himself in his lust to be somebody and to get something for nothing.”
Then there’s this:
Even after leaving England, Veidt was concerned over the plight of children cooped up in London air raid shelters, and he decided to try to cheer up their holiday.
Through his attorneys in London, Veidt donated enough money to purchase 2,000 one-pound tins of candy, 2,000 large packets of chocolate, and 1,000 wrapped envelopes containing presents of British currency. The gifts went to children of needy families in various air raid shelters in the London area during Christmas 1940.
The air raid shelter marshal wrote back to Veidt thanking him for the gifts. Noting Veidt’s unusual kindness, he stated in his letter to him, “It is significant to note that, as far as is known to me, you are the only member of the Theatrical Profession who had the thought to send Christmas presents to the London children.”
Conrad Veidt was - and is - a man to admire, for all sorts of reasons.

Gene Roddenberry posited a future utopian society which, among other things, had done away with money.
Gene Roddenberry also wrote lyrics for the ST:OS theme tune which were never used because Roddenberry himself cancelled their use (besides, they’re crap) .
He wrote them solely in order to qualify for “co-creator” status so he could grab 50% of the fee and royalties paid to composer Alexander Courage, who didn’t know it was being done until after it had happened.
True story: see here and here.
Every DnD game that starts out with a serious “Lord of the Rings” type of tone turns into a Monty Python sketch and every DnD game that starts out like a Monty Python sketch turns into Lord of the Rings
DnD game with characters named Kua the Brave, Enoch Bluehelm, and Hallow Greaves: Our current mission is to save the kingdom from the Dark Queen Ravenbone but we fucked up a charisma roll and now Kua and Ravenbone are dating and the king of Fendale was turned into a frog
DnD game with characters named Bunny Wabbit, Ford Trukk, and Dildo Baggins: Our current mission is to find a birthday present for a spoiled prince but in the process we found a lich planning to devour the life force of everyone in the land and Dildo gave his life to stop him in a scene so moving it won the Newberry Medal
If you give your players room to do whatever they want, including be silly, they will most often choose to express themselves. And you’d be amazed how much you’ll start to care about characters once people have attached little pieces if their soul to them.
If you try to enforce a “serious” tone, it just makes the gags funnier, and your players will treat you with the same casual blasphemy orangutans show to God.
“the same casual blasphemy orangutans show to God” WHAT THE FUCK I’M DECEASED
Ook, amen. Though in Djelibeybi it’s Tutookamen.
The fact that kids all around the world didn’t understand the significance of this scene makes me sad😭
This is beautiful.
How did they miss that?
A different time, A different world 😩
You can tell that line was totally adlibbed, and the producers of the show knew better than to interfere!!!!
me, rewatching my favourite media for the hundredth time: it’s about the comfort. it’s about the nostalgia. it’s about lacking the necessary emotional bandwidth to take in and process new things in this year of our lord 2021
I feel like there should be a website dedicated too breaking down the coded language in these headlines tbh.

I have never seen Islam shown so humanized, so relaxed, so innocent and pure. That’s brilliant and funny.
This feels like the equivalent of the school girl running to class with toast in her mouth but prayer
You all deserve to know dude in the foreground is Jewish, and has done his own version of this with Chanukah where he's literally just. Running out the door reciting his prayers in Hebrew and it's wonderful
Here's the Jewish version
