the thing about aroace people

so I'm aroace. Makes sense, but I just wanna get some things straight.

We are no strangers to love. We know how it works, we know the rules, but we don't really commit to it, we dont feel it, and we don't think of it. But, we know the game and how to play it. If you ask an aroace person what they are thinking, good odds they will help you understand. Generally, we don't really give up on friendship, we also try not to let people down. We like to run around, and we try not to desert you. We try not to make people cry, we try not to lie, and most of all, we try not to hurt people.

What is alterous attraction?

Alterous attraction, at least, in how I understand and conceptualize it, is a form of emotional attraction that exists outside of the ideas of “romantic” and “platonic” attraction. Similar to the ways in which queerplatonic relationships are non-romantic while also defying ideas of what is traditionally considered platonic or non-romantic, for me, alterous attraction is a non-romantic attraction that also defies ideas of what can be considered non-romantic.

Romance is a construct, after all. And for me, I label my emotional attractions as alterous rather than romantic or platonic because there’s nothing about it that says it has to be inherently romantic, because I feel like exists outside of the construct of “romance”. My current partner and I might have a romantic relationship with romantic intent but the “crush” I had and my attractions have never been inherently romantic. It wasn’t “mm yes I want to date them romantically, it was “wow gosh I like them a lot and I want to spend time with them and get to know them better and maybe also hold their hand, amongst other things (but that’s more sensual attraction) and I’d like to be dating them but at the end of the day it doesn’t matter how I just want to spend time with them.”
