After about a year of trying to cope with the fact that I could not change this blog to my primary blog, I've finally given up and decided to start afresh. For that and some other reasons, I'm carrying Arrival Attempts elsewhere.

Afraid To Say | Brendon O'Brien

I was recently asked to perform for the Ministry of Health's No Ifs No Butts campaign. It's the ministry's move to help promote tobacco-free lifestyles for youth, and somehow the universe knew that I was the perfect poet fomr such a campaign and the link was made.

Until that point, though, I had never given any thought into writing a smoking piece. So it wasn't until that point that I realized how great, and how bad, working on a piece like that would be for me.

My grandfather has been smoking since before anyone in my family knew him. Now, he's dreadfully ill to the point where we're taking him to the hospital almost every other day. My stepfather was also a smoker, and he passed away of lymphoma in 2009.

Letting those things out, including the fact that I have pent-up issues surrounding death in my family to begin, is responsible for maybe the toughest piece I've ever wrote. It's a piece that I'm still looking at to discover how to perform. Because, truth is, it's the kind of emotional piece that I've never truly allowed myself to write - the one about myself at my most vulnerable.
