hello hello ^_^ i was wondering if you could talk a bit about ronnie? i keep seeing your reblogs and thinking "waow that's so character!!" and i simply must know precisely what sort of gordian knot of diseases you have given her.
GASPPP it would be entirely my honor to talk about Ronnie as much as you'd like!!!!! I'm so happy she's caught your eye! ^w^

First things first, you should know she's a Date Everything OC. But all you need to know if you aren't familiar with it is that they're all object gijinkas.
So! Ronnie here is a vintage luxury wrist watch :) She's ambitious, charismatic, charming, perfectionistic, very romantic, and perhaps more than just a little bit self-absorbed :P
Ronnie's well aware that she's, first and foremost, a status symbol, and that her timekeeping skills are secondary. As such, she's very concerned with her image and her reputation.
(More under the cut because I ended up rambling quite a bit lmao)
There are two aspects of her reputation that Ronnie is particularly concerned with:
On one hand, she must be beautiful, eye-catching, elegant, refined, luxurious. It's what she was made for. She has very ambitious plans for the future, involving fine dining, international travel, high fashion, all that rich people stuff. She is not just any watch, she is THE watch, she is a princess, and she'll make sure you (you as in, the player character) know that.
She's special and destined for greatness - and the fact that she's in your possession means you must be special and destined for greatness too! Not everyone can have a watch like her, after all. She's very exclusive. And it's her responsibility to make her wearer look very important!
(This also gives her kind of a jealous + competitive streak when it comes to other watches and other timepieces in general. She has to be the best and the only one or else she is nothing)
On the other hand, she really wants to be seen as a good person. Any luxury item can be a spoiled rich kid, sure, but no one likes a spoiled rich kid, and Ronnie really, really needs that kind of validation. So, being a princess is not enough. She has to be chosen by her subjects.
For this reason, she's become kind of a social butterfly, always going around the house performing good deeds, building rapport with people, helping organize events, trying to get on everyone's good side in case something happens and she needs their support...
She isn't always great at it though :p You might have guessed from me calling her self-absorbed that she's not as good at reading people as she'd like to believe, but hey! To some extent at least she at least tries to adapt to different people's personalities and say what she thinks they want to hear (as long as she thinks they're worth her time, anyway).
It's tiring enough for her to walk that tightrope, but she'd probably be able to handle it if it weren't because there's a catch.
The thing is [SPOILERS] she's not a genuine luxury watch! She's a fake, a counterfeit, more specifically a Frankenwatch. Some parts of her are genuine, but some aren't and this is the crux of all her issues.
In theory, a complete fake would know exactly who they are and who they are pretending to be, right? But Ronnie's in a strange gray area in-between. Is she a victim, the genuine watch whose heart was torn out and now has to relearn how to be herself, or is she the monster, a parasite who's taken over someone else's life? Such questions haunt her.
I generally say that she's piloting a dead man's body after his death, because she was mostly made from his body parts, but that's a bit of an oversimplification. Sure, there was one specific watch she was modelled after, who she was made to replace, BUT it's more accurate to say that she was stitched together from parts taken from different watches Frankenstein style. Or, as I like to put it, her body is a graveyard. Maybe that's kind of a dramatic way to word it, haha.
In any case, that's where her identity issues come into play. I often say she IS the mask and that there's nothing underneath, because every decision she makes is heavily influenced by how it'll make her look. Her appearance, her hobbies, the people she hangs out with, the things she says, they must all fit her "benevolent royal" image, but that's not a role she chose for herself.
You could ask who she is when no one's looking, but I don't think that would help. The logo written on her dial defines her, and those letters hold no meaning if there's no one around to gawk at them. As an actress, she is nobody unless she has an audience to perform for. As I/Me/Myself said, she is quantum physics; her witness brings her to existence!
She's so wrapped up in lies that she doesn't know where they end and where the truth begins. But of course, she would do anything to uphold the illusion that she's a genuine luxury watch. After all, if her secret gets out, she will most likely be vivisected for parts... (also deep down she doesn't have any self-worth. the way she sees it, the facade is the most valuable part of her and so she must hold onto it no matter what)

Maybe this is me taking things too seriously, and I also don't super remember how princess and the frog ends but does this not make Disney 2 for 2 on black princesses never technically getting to be princesses, and instead ending the movie with what is essentially: a highly prestigious service job?

Your liveblogging has really rekindled my Wish hyperfixation lol. When someone does take the time to analyze this movie properly I think there's actually a lot to be said about it, why it ended up the way it did, AND why audiences reacted to it that way, which is also its whole separate conversation that I find equally interesting. You also brought up some very good points that I feel people don't generally bring up when talking about it so I'm glad you decided to liveblog your thoughts! ^^
I really could go on and on about this movie (and I'll try my best to hold back lmao) because I do find its history pretty fascinating. The fact that we have voiced animatics of earlier drafts of the movie which we can directly compare them to the final product only fuels my curiosity. I really do see all the ingredients for an excellent story despite the result, so at some point I got really obsessed with trying to figure out the chain of events to it ending up like this, you know?
If you wanna know more about it, most of what we know about the production pretty much comes from the art book and this documentary (it IS a lengthy documentary and I admit I don't remember much of it at this point but yeah!):
They talk about the deleted scenes and why they were taken out, characters who were rewritten, the usual, and stuff like how This Wish (the song) was written before the actual movie. On that note I believe one of the composers Julia Michaels also talked about how the direction that she was given was, iirc, to write a song from the perspective as a young revolutionary (I believe that was quoted in the art book but I would have to find you sources for that), which would explain how vague the lyrics are and why the songs generally feel like they're ticking off a checklist. But I digress!
If I may just plug one thing, if you feel up to some more media analysis, you might find this video interesting ^^ It goes into the themes and politics of Wish and the racial dynamics between Magnifico, Asha, and Queen Amaya. La'Ron Readus is the only reviewer who I've seen bring up how Magnifico represents the American Dream so, if that's something you're curious about, I highly recommend it!
Also you know what? I don't think Asha is as annoying as everyone says she is. Like she's not that much more in your face #adorkable than e.g. Zoey from KPDH, I think people are just less willing to accept black girls acting silly.
Which isn't to say that the movie gives Asha's the same level of emotional depth as Zoey, and I do conceit that having well done moments of sincerity may also help the sillier moments land but like...
I'm now a little over halfway through the movie (yes i got distracted by video games), and I just want to give a shout out to all the Empowered Female Characters in this movie such as
Asha - Who just kinda walks from place to place as directed by the various men in her life
The Queen - Whose entire existence seems to be standing around looking sad while her husband does evil things™️
Asha's bestie whose name i forgot - Who distracts the king by just kinda standing around as a bunch of unnamed characters bombard the king with questions.
Asha's mom - Who is present in the movie, and says one or possibly several lines of dialogue.
Another way you can really see the billions of rewrite in effect is the fact that Magnifico (the villain) is clearly evil from the start and framed as such by the narrative, but at the same time a big part of the runtime is spent showing his descent into evil - complete with a "if it's a villain they want it's a villain i'll be" music number.
Like I cannot emphasize how obvious it is, that there was one draft where the villain was evil from the start, and one where he started out good then turned evil, and they just sorta duct taped the two together.
Are you, like, evil evil? Or do you actually have a tragic backstory with the possibility of a redemption arc?
If so, is it like, well written at all, and actually speaks about something genuine regarding your character, or is it just sort of the there to essentially give you an easy, not well thought out, reason to be a villain?

give it up for voice breaks everyone. round of applause for shaky whimpers, pained cries, distressed whining, keening in the back of the throat, that moment when a character tries so hard to keep talking but their voice cracks into a fluttery, weak little plea for help
