I was sucked into RotTMNT autism years ago and haven't yet escaped, so I've decided to give in to the voices start writing fics. My writing sideblog is @assorted-writing-things and I'll be posting fic links and stuff there.
Saying goodbye to the flowers feels so surreal cause it's like hi beautiful brand new characters I met you when I was in high school. I knew you by your stat buffs and the places you left the things you loved. I know how each one of you died. You've been here the whole time but I only just got to know you properly. I love you. I am so honored to witness your dream.
Anti-revenge narrative this, anti-revenge narrative that, I personally think that Inigo Montoya had the right idea when he stabbed Count Rugen in the gut and said "I want my father back, you son of a bitch"
A lot of revenge arcs end with the hero saying "there's nothing you can do to bring my loved one back, so me seeking revenge is pointless." The Princess Bride's revenge arc ends with Inigo Montoya saying "there's nothing you can do to bring my loved one back, so there's nothing that can save you."
Not every scene deserves the same amount of page time. Sometimes you need to summarize three weeks in a sentence. Sometimes five minutes takes three chapters. Pacing is about emphasis. Slow down when emotions are high, when decisions matter, when everything could fall apart. Speed up through the boring necessary stuff. Your reader doesn't need to experience every meal and every conversation, just the ones that change something.
the other thing ill say is it could have been very interesting for reid to address the rapid and inexplicable changes to shane’s personality at the end of the long game (immediately overcoming his disordered eating, not wanting to watch the stanley cup finals, passively forgiving everyone offscreen, being excited to play in ottawa without complications) as like……. shane is experiencing a severe dissociative episode.
shane — who at this point has spent the entire book being told by literally everyone that he needs to be less mopey and anxious and to support ilya’s life more — fully compartmentalises everything and pushes all of it down. he’s never been happier, truly. yes he’d love to host the centaurs at his new house without warning. he’d love to do a photoshoot. he’d love to post a video on instagram. he’d love to be the butt of the joke. look how much fun he’s having. this is great. he just needs to be less worried about everything and it’ll all work out. ilya will take care of it. he just needs to go to the back of the line. yes, he wants another slice of chocolate cake please and thank you
ideally i think. ilya and his parents would perhaps slowly catch on that the bizarre stepford wife act is in fact a coping mechanism and shane hollander the person is in fact grieving in total freefall. itd be nice for other characters to objectively look at the situation and think. man i can’t believe we were mad at shane for getting threatened by the commissioner of the nhl or being outed twice over or being accused of cheating and losing both his professional career and his reputation. but in the meantime shane is doing just awesome thanks for asking.

no it’s really that serious because he was treated like he was worthless, lazy, broken, weak by the people who were supposed to love him his whole life. and they took advantage of him and made him feel powerless, stripped him of his agency so they could burn through everything he gave them for years. and then he met shane who said no, you’re not lazy, no, you’re not weak, no you’re not broken. and even if you can’t control everything you can control me. you’re already powerful and strong and i want you to make me weak so you can feel stronger. you’re driven and disciplined but if you want to be lazy i will wait on you like a servant to his king. like a dog to its owner. you don’t have to lift a finger if you dont want. you can have anything you want. i see you in all your glory and i will worship you. i see your shortcomings as you see mine and i will love you for all of it.
and the whole time ilya was being treated that way his whole life he was fighting so so hard to take care of these people who treated him like shit because he believed it was the right thing to do and because he is a good fucking person. he's drafted #1 in the whole world and his father insults him in front of his new boss at the very beginning of his new career. he sends his brother thousands of dollars and all he hears in return is actual vicious slurs. the more he takes care of them and does for them the more they take advantage of him, the more they demand, the more they hate him and hurt him, always more more more
and then he meets shane and shane is like thank you. thank you so much for taking care of me. i needed it so badly. i love you so much for what you give me and how you take care of me. please let me give you something back. how about myself. how about everything i have and everything i am, however you want, whenever you want.
Saw a post about how Sherlock is delightful and not obnoxious in the books compared to the adaptations and I've just realised why-
It's because they're from Watson's point of view
Objectively, Sherlock's behaviour is obnoxious. Factually, announcing random things about people around him and generally acting smarter than everyone else and being annoyed when they dont get it is annoying to other people. In tv shows and movies, we see that, because we watch from 3rd person, alongside Lestrade and Mrs Hudson and everyone else.
But the books are entirely Watson's pov! Sherlock comes across delightful because that's how John sees him! Excitable and laughing at things and rambling adorably and being not difficult to live with at all, but that's because that's how he is with John, and how John sees him!
Basically, Sherlock is objectively annoying to be around but Watson is a biased narrator because he just finds him lovely.
"The last time any human touched Ryland Grace was an act of horrific violence"
Well... Yes and no.
The last time Ryland Grace was CONSCIOUS of any human touch was when he was knocked out. Absolutely true.
But the last human contact he would have had was Yao and Ilyukhina. Who were told that he was scared about panicking during launch and asked to be sedated. Who did all the pre flight checks before the Hail Mary launched. Who would have carefully, gently carried Grace to his bed in the dormitory, made sure he was secure, and initiated his coma procedure.
There would have been love there. Remember Ilyukhina throwing her hands high and saying "welcome to crew!" Remember Yao saying how he hoped Grace would say yes. Remember how much the crew trusted Grace, Stratt's First Officer, the guy who helped them so much, and was so kind to them, and was the one who they entrusted their preferred methods of suicide to. Who thought they were wonderful and brave.
They would have tucked him in. Maybe brushed his hair out of his face. Maybe said something kind to him before initiating their own coma procedures.
Ryland Grace doesn't remember, of course he wouldn't. But the last human touch he ever had was full of love.
The code in the Guitar is probably not "1225".
HEAR ME OUT. HEAR ME OUT. I think it's longer than just 1225. The way the narrative actually treats it, we haven't yet gotten the code in the guitar. While we saw the first 3 digits as 1 2 2, Kris tears us out before we can finish it, and then there's the entire holiday manor SOUL sequence in which we struggle with Kris over the guitar, and then Carol shows up and ruins everything. Susie then goes on a long speech about how everything was going perfect until Carol showed up and then emphasizes:
That we will have to make another attempt on the Guitar Code tomorrow. This is re-emphasized later on if you inspect the shelter:
We know where one of the codes *is* but not its actual value. At least in the eyes of the story, we did not successfully retrieve the code hidden in the guitar. We will have to try again later in the story. But when discussing this with others, I commonly got a reply to the degree of: " But we already know the code inside the guitar, it's 1225! Why would we waste time going back to get it when we already know it! " And to an extent I get that. But I would like to propose something:
The code isn't 1225. At least, not completely. Consider this: If the code were just 1225, wouldn't... wouldn't Susie just be able to memorize that? It's 4 digits, it surely wouldn't be that hard. And look at what she actually says:
Not, "I couldn't really make it out", or, like, "I forgot it", but, she "didn't get to write it down". That to me seems like specific phrasing. You wouldn't need to write down a code that's only 4 digits, would you? Maybe at some point to keep it safe, but, in the moment? Susie's... Well, Susie is Susie, but surely she's not that stupid.
I refuse to believe Susie would see "1225" and go "Oh, shit, it's the code! I need a pen and paper right now, there's no way I can memorize this for a few minutes."
And so I propose a solution: It's not just 1225. It's 1225 plus some additional numbers- potentially a year? Probably the year Dess went missing. That could add up to 4 additional numbers, making it an 8 digit code, making it more reasonable that Susie would feel a need to write it down. Potentially foreshadowing for this also exists. Remember this scene?
The joke here is literally that there's a "code" that seems to only have 4 inputs at first, Susie literally suggests memorizing it, but then it's revealed that it's too long to memorize and must be written down, pen on paper.
Feels like it could be foreshadowing to me. TLDR: I think the code in the guitar is an 8-digit code, not a 4-digit code, thus solidifying the idea that Yes, we Do have to go back for the Guitar.
UPDATE!!! In the Weird Route, her dialog here is slightly different.
She claims she found the guitar, noticed the code, then took the Guitar to the living room? This makes absolutely no sense, if the code is a 4 digit code. This basically deconfirms the idea that her problem was that she didn't get to SEE the code- she was alone with it! The problem was that she needed to WRITE. IT. DOWN. I can't believe I neglected to consider this before. It's so real, the code has to be longer than 1225, there's no way it makes sense if it's not.
My absolute gospel truth and I'm sorry this is so sappy but--where I'm living, Ilya fully changes his name to Hollander when they get married, like just fully legally changes it. And despite the fact that he continues to use Rozanov professionally ("Just like J. Lo," Ilya says.) everyone who knows them personally obviously knows what Ilya's legal name is and also assume it's a way to kind of stick it to his shitheel father. To this end, and kind of as a joke at first, people start referring to their two-person unit as The Hollanders ("Okay, the Hollanders are in room 508" etc.) but it becomes steadily less and less a joke when neither Shane or Ilya really seems to think of it as one. Ilya especially seems to genuinely love it. He'll say shit like "Oh yes the Hollanders will be there" when asked if they're coming to a barbecue like they live in a postcard. He LOVES to give his name as Ilya Hollander and he LOVES to book reservations under 'Misters Hollander' and he LOVES to say the words 'Shane and Ilya Hollander' out loud with his mouth. I also think that for their last game together in the league Ilya and Shane wear jerseys that say S. Hollander 24 and I. Hollander 81 and it's like. An end of an era type thing. And they frame the jerseys.
