Something I just realized about Book Eva during the explosion scene and Movie Ryland during the explosion scene.

In the book, Eva most probably gets thrown to the ground by the explosion. As soon as she recovers, the very first person she calls out to is Grace, asking if he's okay.

Alright, maybe that's just because she knows he's the closest person to her.

But that's not what sticks with me.

What sticks with me is what she does next.

She physically goes to him before reaching for her radio to find out what actually happened.

And I kept asking myself: why?

Grace already answered. He said he was alright.

So why not grab the radio immediately? Why not assess the situation first?

Why did she have to go to him?

Because she needed to make sure he was actually okay.

Because she needed to see with her own eyes that he was still there.

Because maybe, no matter what had just happened, she knew she could deal with it as long as he was still there.

Before anything else, she needed to know that Grace was safe.

I actually can't with Eva.

Then there's the movie.

There's a small movement Sandra Hüller makes that you could interpret as Stratt checking on Ryland for a split second before she runs toward the explosion.

But what really gets me is Ryland.

Stratt takes off running without a second thought. It's dangerous. They don't even know what happened yet, but she runs toward the explosion like her life depends on it.

And Grace follows her.

This is the same man who's defined by his fear. The same man who believes he's a coward. The same man who couldn't willingly sacrifice himself for humanity.

Yet when Eva runs straight toward danger...

...he runs after her.

It's the first time we see him willingly throw himself into a dangerous situation without her forcing him or cornering him into it.

It's his own choice.

His instinct isn't to run away.

His instinct is to follow her.

I am so not normal about these two.

Stratt is dedicated to one thing: saving humanity. She thinks what action will bring me closest to my goal? and whatever the answer is to that question, she takes that action. Whether it's kind or cruel... if it brings her closer to her goal, she will do it. Harmful to one or helpful to another--there is no morality in it, not in the compassion and not in the harshness. She simply does what is necessary, void of any intent to help or harm any individual. Eva Stratt sacrifices her humanity for the sake of humanity and becomes, if you will, a force of nature. Nature has no morality, it only exists; a storm cannot be cruel, a soft breeze cannot be kind, it only exists until completion, until the circumstances formulating its existence disappear. And so shall Eva Stratt exist as long as astrophage does, warm when warmth is needed, steely when steel is needed, a friend when a companionship is needed, a traitor when a betrayal is needed. And perhaps that's why it's so impossible to hold it against her, it's not out of a desire to cause harm, it's not personal... It is only a desire to do what's necessary to give humanity its best shot at survival. How can you hate her for loving humanity enough to change her nature? How can you know her and not understand why you're no exception? How can you truly be her friend and not understand that Eva Stratt is fueled by two mugs of coffee and more love than most people will know in their lifetime? How can you feel bitter? How could you possibly resent her for doing the right thing, even if it hurt you

still not over phm movie and dynamic change for stratt/grace. book stratt/grace is betrayal with teeth, and i do love that. it’s the pragmatic choice made brutal. grace still sits with all that anger, all that raw pain, because yes, she had to, but she still did it to him.

but movie stratt/grace. god.

movie eva isn’t cold. she’s guarded. painfully, deliberately guarded. until the mask slips and, for one dangerous moment, she thinks she might get to keep him.

she cares about him. she knows she cannot afford to care about him. and she does it anyway.

she sends him because she has to. and it hurts because it’s right. and it hurts because it’s him.

and his goodbye message being so gentle??? no rage. no cruelty. not even the satisfaction of blame. just this awful, beautiful understanding. he knows she was right. he knows what she chose. and he doesn’t make her carry his anger too.

movie eva stratt, thee woman that you are. the pain. the tenderness. the emotional damage of it all.

i rewatched PHM today for the first time since I saw it and dude, the idea that anyone could ever hate Eva Stratt is so crazy to me. Maybe it’s just because I already knew the big twists going into it a second time, but even when she’s sending off Grace, she is as gentle as she can afford to be. And you can tell she genuinely does believe she’s evil or awful in some way. She carries so much guilt in every one of her expressions. And she is so kind!!!! Like, she’s sitting here, trying to hold the world together, and she goes out of her way to make the Hail Mary as comfortable as possible for the crew. Why would she pack vodka if she didn’t want them having fun, if she didn’t care about their well-being? The shorts and colorful quilts she packs for Grace? The evolution dioramas on the walls, to make the memories coming back a smoother adjustment? The skittles, because she knows Carl and Grace bought so many??? The whole entire “don’t go crazy” room!!! She pirated EVERY PIECE OF MEDIA EVER FOR THEM. She sent up children’s drawings to motivate them!!! The fox mask she packed for Grace??? The binder of photos of everyone’s loved ones?? I’m so ill. She was handed impossible circumstances and did her very best to be kind given those circumstances, all the while believing “oh, yes, I’m the only one who could do this because I’m cruel and don’t care about people, that’s why they let me do this” Eva Stratt they could never in a million years make me hate you.
