things designed to become more beautiful with wear>>>>
bronze. denim. tussar silk. thick leather. friendship. mahagony. rosewood. cast iron skillets. walnut. antique rifles. muscles. diaries. memory foam. mortars and pestles.
most buildings with copper roofs, sills, details, etc that have that beautiful green patina (which is called verdigris) are designed with that colour in mind--which is to say that the building and the design is not really finished until the whole project ages into itself and tarnishes to green.
how wonderful to rely on the beauty that comes with age!
am so obsessed with this little interaction in the comments of some buzzfeed article…like i dont know what this means but its literally love
It was so awful for the first year—after that it was a little easier, one didn’t keep thinking ‘this day last year’
This is not one of the lines I particularly remember, but I don't think I'll forget it again. This is...exactly how my mind works.
It has been 20 years since I lost my beloved grandmother and I vividly remember looking at the clock every few hours, thinking about how she'd been here 6, 24, 48 hours ago.
A decade later, over 12,000 km away from home, I'd keep replaying how 1 week ago I'd been napping next to my mum, and 2 weeks ago, I'd been shopping with my sister.
I'll never get over how subtle but gut-wrenching LMM's portrayal of grief is.
got cornflakes for fried chicken & the back of the box has its own recipe. easy as pie. "rinse chicken tenders with cold water and coat with crushed kelloggs corn flakes cereal." and then cook. no binding agent. no seasoning. nothing but a pile of flavorless chicken with a side of the extra-dried-out cornflakes that fell off it. serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce. doesnt even say serve hot. Serve Warm. wouldnt wanna get too wild with it. truly this is the spirit of cornflakes
“Because the truth is, tech doesn’t have an image problem. It doesn’t have a message problem. It has an intention problem. What’s wrong with the axe murderer who broke into my house is not that he hasn’t successfully persuaded me to buy into his narrative. What’s wrong is that he’s trying to kill me with an axe. Similarly, when you launch a product that’s designed to put millions of people out of work, block access to sources of verifiable truth, replace human creativity with slop, and lower the barriers to every sort of atrocity, the problem isn’t that you haven’t told the public a good story about those things. The problem is that you are trying to do them.”

Everyone should be aware of nitter.net
for any address to twitter you can replace the “x.com” with “nitter.net” and you will be able to browse as if you have an account. Lifesaver.
Similarly, imginn.com works for most Instagram addresses. I still haven’t found one for Facebook.

one of many reasons why i simply do not care if women’s literature (particularly romance) is merely “wish fulfillment” is that that so-called wish fulfillment is often a solace for women in terrible situations, especially with their male partners. i often think about l.m. montgomery and one of her more obscure romance novels, the blue castle, when it comes to this conversation. castle is pretty much unadulterated fantasy, and the theme of personal emancipation is strong - a young woman, overlooked and downtrodden by her family and the men around her, is diagnosed with a fatal heart disease and decides to make the most of the year she has left. she escapes her family, hangs out with “riff raff”, does and wears what she wants, leaves her church, and marries a man for love despite his terrible reputation. in the end, the woman finds out that she was misdiagnosed and that her husband is actually the son of a millionaire, making all of her dreams come true at once. it does seem ridiculously convenient from an outside perspective; but in light of l.m.’s unhappy marriage to a dour misogynist, her lifelong yearning for a man who wasn’t considered good enough by her family, and the age and culture she lived in valuing a woman’s propriety and respectability above her personal freedom and happiness, it’s not hard to see how the blue castle would have been extremely cathartic to write. i often see this idea of romance novels being the fantasies of unhappy married women posited as something shameful and ridiculous when finding an escape in “unrealistic” dreams is a totally understandable reaction to feeling unfulfilled.
I love how Zohran Mamdani is wearing a suit everywhere. And if he has anything else he puts it ON TOP of the suit. A basketball jersey. A high-vis vest. All worn over the suit. He’s like the mayor character in a cartoon who’s always dressed as The Mayor. If I didn’t know who he was and he biked past me in NYC I’d be like holy shit was that the mayor
Not to bring the serious to a very fun post, but this reaction is exactly what Mamdani is working for with his image, because in a very real way the most effective way for him to be The Mayor is if he looks like The Mayor.
This is a man who is VIOLENTLY aware that when it comes to conservatives, he is a Muslim first, a Brown Man second, an Immigrant third, a Socialist fourth, and a human a very distant fifth, if considered at all. He was also a young adult during the Obama Years and will have seen Republicans rip Obama to shreds for wearing a tan suit instead of a dark one and use literally ANY excuse they could to try and degrade his image.
Despite the fact that a mayor who wears a T-shirt and jeans might "seem more approachable" in the eyes of the average American, Zohran Mamdani knows that someone with his profile fundamentally cannot get away with that the way his White colleagues can. He has instead put in the effort to look professional and BE approachable, because not only does it make it easier for him to reach and represent his constituents, it forces everyone, including both his opponents and establishment Democrats, to engage with the work he is doing instead of judging his image. The fact that he is always seen in a suit and is recognisably The Mayor is, while also something he has fun with, a deliberate choice to ensure he is as inarguably A Professional Politician To Be Taken Seriously. The added humour of e.g. the hi-vis is a bonus, only achievable because he works so hard to Look Like The Mayor.
Adding these tags from @haunted-stranger-garden bc they illustrate this brilliantly

I can’t even call someone on tiktok saying a song from 2022 is “nostalgic” stupid and annoying… I also have 2022 nostalgia and what’s crazy is I’ve actually had 2022 nostalgia since 2023 because that’s how good 2022 was for me…. 2022 is like my dead wife. Especially summer…. God summer 2022….. my beautiful dead wife!!!
