The thing about me is I'm ready to defend my wife even if she becomes the villain like I stood by Agatha Harkness when she murdered witches for fun and still do tbh I hope she gets her body again so she can fuck even more shit up so when I said I was ready to defend Marie's wrongs trust me I MEANT it but what's bothering me right now in certain parts of the fandom is the threshold to calling a queer black woman a "villain" is soooo much lower than any other character.
"Cate believed she was helping her friends even if she was wrong" so does Marie. She is literally convinced she's keeping them safe by accepting this chosen one role she didn't want in the first place and keeping them far away AND she's not trying to start a genocide in the name of helping her friends.
"Sam was institutionalized his whole life" so was Marie. She was in a Vought controlled orphanage with barely internet access or any access to the outside world and would have been sent to Elmira forever had she not been accepted into God U, she has no safety net no one looking out for her, the only family she has left knew she was alive and never lifted a finger to look for her, she accidentally killed her parents and got punished for it year after year with zero support or therapy, she might not have been tortured the way Sam was but she wasn't living it up in the suburbs either, she was under Vought's thumb and again she didn't try to start a genocide.
I would have supported her villain arc, she's been abused by every single institution and every single adult in her life, has lost everyone, has dedicated her life to becoming a hero and getting her sister back, only for her sister to call her a monster and to find out there are no heroes under Vought, her villain arc would been understandable and compelling.
But she hasn't done anything villainous. Her story is no less compelling but she hasn't gone in any way morally dark. Or even morally grey like Sage (who I adore she's such a fun and interesting character). Marie genuinely thought she was doing the right thing, she was convinced (wrongly but that's not her fault she doesn't have the information we as the audience have) that Godolkin would stop Cipher and Homelander and that it would maker her friends safe. And in that moment of wanting to keep them away from harm, she went too far and used her powers. That's not a villain, that's a bad moment. Mind you she has just found her sister, lost her, resurrected her, found out she was a Supe, escape the torture prison, found out she was made the same way Homelander was, found out Vought will never ever leave her alone no matter what, was called a monster by her sister, decided to go get the only person she believes can help, all on barely any sleep. I think a bad moment is understandable.
But Marie's isn't allowed to have bad moments. Marie can only be perfect or be a villain. And that's what's weird.
Butcher and Hughie and Frenchie and Cate and Sam can fuck up all they want, they'll always be heroes at best and anti heroes at worst.
Marie gets frustrated once and gets branded a villain. Yall might as well be Homelander calling her an animal for defending herself against Cate.
