I needed to clear my head.
The second that bell rang, I was out of class, weaving through the crowded halls like a shadow. I didn’t care where I was going—I just needed to move. Fast.
Get out of your head, Crowe.
Helenna Wellsway was already there.
Her eyes, her voice, the way she looked at me like… like I wasn’t some ticking time bomb ready to go off.
I clenched my jaw, trying to shake her out of my mind. I couldn’t let her get too close. Not if I wanted to keep her safe.
I was lost in thought, my mind swirling with everything that had happened earlier. Damien Crowe was a mystery I couldn’t ignore. I knew better than to get involved with someone like him—danger followed him like a shadow.
But I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to him.
More than whatever darkness he was carrying.
I turned the corner too fast, my head down as I fumbled with my phone.
“Shit,” I muttered, barely able to stop myself from knocking her over.
Her small frame stumbled back, but I caught her wrist before she could fall. Her skin was soft and warm against mine.
For a second—just a second—I forgot how to breathe.
“Whoa,” she whispered, eyes wide as she looked up at me.
And damn it… there they were again. Those eyes.
“Watch where you’re going, Wellsway.” My voice was sharper than I intended, but I needed to build that wall between us. Fast.
“Maybe you should slow down,” she shot back, her lips curling into the faintest hint of a smirk.
Great. Of course, she had to be stubborn.
I let go of her wrist, but I could still feel the warmth where her skin had touched mine. It lingered, like a brand I couldn’t shake.
“Sorry,” she murmured, but her eyes never left mine.
I should’ve walked away. I wanted to walk away.
But instead, I stood there.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” I asked, my voice low.
Her head tilted slightly, curiosity flashing in her eyes.
“Because I’m trying to figure you out.”
“Good luck with that.” I took a step back, shoving my hands in my pockets, trying to create space. But even then, I could still feel her presence, pulling me in like gravity.
“Damien…” Her voice was softer this time. Almost… concerned.
I hated how much I liked the way my name sounded on her lips.
“Don’t.” I shook my head, my guard slamming back into place. “You don’t want to get mixed up with me.”
Her smile faded, but she didn’t look away.
“Maybe that’s not my decision to make.”
Why did she have to be so damn persistent?
“Stay away, Helenna,” I murmured, my voice barely above a whisper. I didn’t know if I was warning her… or myself.
But as I turned to walk away, I felt it.
