This piece was a step away from a lot of my other more wild pieces. Normally, I’d whimsically go through the piece and allow the painting tell me what the next stroke should be. For this one however I attempted a fairly realistic lay in of the value (light and dark) and established something of a gradient going from warm tones to cool ones. Once I was mostly done it looked fairly good but it didn’t fit with my other concentration pieces so I added some mark-making to create the effect of skin smoking into color and abstraction.
